Tales of the Urban Explorer: Sally's House

avatar
(Edited)

“Sally’s House” was frustratingly central; a little like the mansion on the hill but next to a busy main road, and with a high wall surrounding it.

"The last time we came, you could walk up the driveway and saunter in", said @anidiotexplores, whose visit was not the first. He had seen the mansion before the fire had blazed through the building and destroyed much of it.

28_IMG_6901_28.jpg

I was aware of “Sally’s House” when it was hitting the tour bus. The problem was the distance, it was too far for just one visit and in 2020 there were many more low-reaching fruits to conquer nearby.

...'I knew Sally's House was no time capsule, not any more..., I was too late for that'...

The time was 4.15 pm and a five-foot wall was in between me and the house. A gap between the hedges atop helped; the masses of annoying school kids walking nearby watching me struggle to haul my body up was most definitely not.

@anidiotexplores was up and over the wall instantly, leaving me flailing once again.

“Go on lad, you can do it”, came the jeers from behind me. I didn’t look but was dimly aware of a group of teenagers approaching my position.

Lad! I bloody wish, but it did inspire me with temporary superhuman strength. I hauled with all my might having no footholds to use on the annoying smooth wall, and rested my knee on the very sharp top edge of the wall.

That fucking hurt, I thought at the time but the adrenalin had kicked in, and was working overtime.

30_IMG_6904_30.jpg

My shoulder kind of hurts, I thought, getting my body upright and wading through the bushes which gave me a first glimpse of "Sally's House".

The surrounding grass had gone into overdrive, nothing I am not used to and @anidiotexplores was already trying the board windows for anything loose.

"We need to check the back", he said face twisted in disappointment at the many secure boards; the back was nearly always the place of entry.

Access turned out to be simple, through a window and into another burnt mess. I was feeling a little pain from climbing the wall but nothing too serious.

1_IMG_6873_1.jpg

Having seen some lovely images of "Sally's House" before the burning, I stared in dismay at what was once a piano. There would be no playing today.

2_IMG_6874_2.jpg

Some of the old mansion had been spared, sure there was smoke damage but it was not all burnt. Most of the contents unfortunately had gone west.

3_IMG_6875_3.jpg

One of these days, climbing through a window and relying on the inner landing platform NOT to collapse is going to end in serious tears.

@anidiotexplores does not wear gloves but has been blessed with hands made from genuine manufactured iron.

Mine would be full of open cuts, wounds, scrapes, and lashes if I didn't wear the skiing gloves I bought from JD Sports; asking shopkeepers for 'Urban Exploring Gloves' results in funny looks and confusion.

4_IMG_6876_4.jpg

Filing cabinets rarely want to open; being metal they rust and seize up. In this case, the former top secret documents hidden within were long gone.

5_IMG_6877_5.jpg

Who would paint their walls in Royal Blue paint, uck…, not to my tastes?

6_IMG_6878_6.jpg

There was little point pining about what was up there. This area had caught fire, or at least those former stairs had.

7_IMG_6879_7.jpg

What a wonderful piece of the past. It was completely fucked, would never work again but was waiting for us nevertheless.

8_IMG_6881_8.jpg

In the days before the radio stations were labeled 'Radio 1, Radio 2', they must have been named 'BBC 4'. This was the former family entertainment unit and a deluxe model looking at the size of it.

9_IMG_6882_9.jpg

I should have tried the taps. Water likely would not come out, and I was not thirsty enough to sample some if it did.

10_IMG_6883_10.jpg

Nature was attempting to infiltrate despite the solid wooden exterior seals.

11_IMG_6884_11.jpg

“Sally’s House” was named as such due to the many scrawled references on the walls. I had seen none as yet.

12_IMG_6885_12.jpg

The décor was getting ever worse, even the fireplace was boarded up. Any misguided Santa's would get stuck down the chimney, and unless expert climbers, would starve to death after eating all the chocolate gifts.

13_IMG_6886_13.jpg

We ended up back in the ‘Piano Room’. This one was never going to utter a single note again.

14_IMG_6887_14.jpg

Noting the lack of blood attached to this hair, I guessed it was not the result of a scalping but some cheap wig possibly used by one of those 'transformer dudes'.

15_IMG_6888_15.jpg

Severe smoke damage and full of not very interesting items.

16_IMG_6889_16.jpg

I am sure it’s a cock but a very strange example. Could it be the ‘artist’ got the wobbles or was it a self-portrait of his own bent member?

17_IMG_6890_17.jpg

Finally a reference to 'Sally'; I am not convinced 'Sally' lived here.

18_IMG_6891_18.jpg

A comfortable bed for some homeless wretch; bring one of those disposable sleeping bags and you are set for a while.

19_IMG_6892_19.jpg

Is “Sally’s House” recoverable? Yes, but it would take a huge investment to pull this house back to its former glory.

20_IMG_6893_20.jpg

After my accident at the last explore, my risk and confidence level was at an all-time low. Nevertheless, after seeing @anidiotexplores bolt up the stairs, I followed suit.

21_IMG_6894_21.jpg

This was as far as I was prepared to go, at least that way.

22_IMG_6895_22.jpg

The view from the top of the burnt stairs; there was little reason to head that way either.

23_IMG_6896_23.jpg

When you see grass or weeds on the surface of an upper floor, keep well away.

24_IMG_6897_24.jpg

The corridor was treacherous, and I could feel the squishy boards under my feet, but what was down there I wonder?

25_IMG_6898_25.jpg

This was the last straw. No fucking way I going up there, regardless of my comrade's actions. He told me it was a nice view but lacking anything else.

26_IMG_6899_26.jpg

Once again, the local facilities were out of order. How can one seriously take a piss when this continually happens?

27_IMG_6900_27.jpg

Feeling achy I descended and we made our way out of "Sally's House".

RedLine.png

EPILOGUE: The resulting actions of climbing the wall with that 'superhuman' strength left me with a knee injury that took around a month to heal.

Worse, an old rotator cuff injury on my right shoulder had been re-aggravated resulting in months of disturbed sleep and pain through both day and night. I had to take both Ibuprofen and 60mg of Codeine nightly to get any shut-eye.

29_IMG_6903_29.jpg

If you have suffered a rotator cuff injury then you will know they heal painstakingly slowly, but they do if you persist despite the 'they never heal' bullshit you may read on the internet.

I had to sleep on my back and left side for six months before daring to try the right side again. To this day, (12 months later), I still feel occasional pain in my shoulder.

I don't understand why people choose intense colours for home painting, it would make one depressed even if they aren't.

Royal Blue, maybe they were connected to the Queen or something! It hurts the eyes.

I was amazed by this publication. Its author has truly seen the beauty among the ruins. The text makes us look too. I liked the photos.

There's usually something to see. I was lucky the piano and old radiogram until were still there. The latter, even in the conditions could have value.

Another one that needs to be shoved down, not much there might as reclaim the space. Sorry about all the injuries, suppose it's all part and parcel of urban explores....

What goes up, must come down! !BEER

This was a serious injury. I thought I escaped it on the previous one, and that was why I referenced 'Final Destination'. Fate was catching up with me, but not death!

Perhaps now you going to avoid climbing like an eighteen year old, find easier access, lived to tell the story!

There was no other way to get in here. An arm up would have helped, but my comrade can never wait and tends to leave me behind often!

Ah man, that's too bad about that hi fi system. I bet it sounded amazing back in the day! My friend has a console that is in a wooden cabinet and he had it restored. It sounds really awesome.

That was so unexpected. I rarely see items like that even in Time Capsules. A lovely piece of vintage history.

You always go on some crazy adventures.

I know, and 'safe' is occasionally not adhered to. I had a very lucky break last weekend traversing razor wire. That stuff is hideous. If you paid me to do that one again, I would refuse.

lol. Razor wire is no joke. I had to set up miles of that stuff while I was in the military. I’ve seen plenty of people get stuck in it.

lol, no, it was people setting up the razor wire that got caught in it.

Is it that tough to 'fit'?
This is what I was facing last weekend. Down the other side was the target.

I can only imagine how beautiful the interior would have been before the fire incident.

Very beautiful structure from the outside.

'Sally's House' was visited a lot before the fire. It was full of items then, and one lovely mansion house. There's always idiots who want to burn them down.

I'm sure there were people living in this kind of house before but I always wonder where they all have gone to
It is weird to abandon this kind of house

It seems that your visit to "Sally's House" was quite the challenge. Thank you for sharing this fantastic story.
I'm sorry to know about your injury but what to do as these explorations can be risky.

When this house can be recovered with a good investment, I think it'll forever be a haunted house, I mean this house is a great example of what we see in horror movies, right? Now my curious mind wants to know, didn't you feel anything strange like paranormal in there? Do you know any paranormal story about this place?

I hope Sally didn't notice you intercepting her house, hahaha.

Good heavens, I have spent a long time looking at many of these photos. Beyond the visual quality of these, I am surprised by the level of human drama I see in some of them... This place inside is really like looking at a madhouse painted by Dalí or something similarly crazy...

I am sure it’s a cock but a very strange example. Could it be the ‘artist’ got the wobbles or was it a self-portrait of his own bent member?

And as expected, my "photographic observance" has been abruptly interrupted by your famous satirical humour my friend! :)))

One of these days some prominent (and perhaps a little crazy) editor will look at your work and give you a call.... I'm sure of it...

Thanks a lot for sharing an making my day dear @slobberchops friend!!!...

Wow, that player piano would have been pretty cool to have. This place looks crazy as hell. I am always amazed to see that people can just leave destroyed properties like this sitting around for years. Where I live in Los Angeles that plot of land would be worth millions on its own.
