Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Adelphi

The Adelphi is one I covered in a set of fails a few weeks ago. It was never going to continue to be in this status as ‘uncharted’ for long as getting in was blatantly obvious.

1_IMG_1988_1.jpg

I don’t see a reason to be coy and secretive as the only thing of value in there is dust, muck, crap, and cobwebs. So if you want to know where it is, then use this article to find it, it's not that hard.

2_IMG_1989_2.jpg

The Adelphi may also render you with a FREE broken leg if you are not careful; such is the state of the floors on the upper levels.

I tried to find an image where The Adelphi looked good. This one is from 2012 when another boarded-up pub named ‘The Reindeer’ stood adjacent. It looked just as bad then as now.

TWO eyesore buildings blighting the Burnley landscape have been targeted for demolition.

The former Reindeer pub, opposite Burnley Central railway station, and a derelict former taxi office next to the Mitre pub have both been demolished as Burnley Council bids to improve the main gateway routes into town.

Coun. Roger Frost, the council’s executive member for regeneration, said: “The demolition of these two buildings illustrates that the council, working with others, is making progress on improving the look of our town.

The Mitre and ‘Santa’ pub have been gone for the best part of eight years and yet the Adelphi still stands, looking suitably horrifying to the casual passer-by.

OldAdelphi.JPG
Source

This old archive image from, I'm guessing the 1950s depicts both pubs, the Adelphi in the far corner. I can't find any information on when either was closed.

In 2018 there was the ritual fire, but even that was not enough to make it demolition fodder. Quite simply put, The Adelphi wants to keep on living.

2_IMG_2686_2.jpg

Pub basements are usually quite grotty and this one was no exception. We made our way up to the main floor as there was virtually nothing to see down there besides dust.

3_IMG_2687_3.jpg

5_IMG_2689_5.jpg

Having seen some previous reports on The Adelphi (but surprisingly no recent ones), I knew what to expect.

It was a wreck and virtually no different than what I could see from the old report five years ago.

6_IMG_2691_6.jpg

…’would you care for a drink sir, before participating in our pub quiz?’…

Some seats are less charred than others.

7_IMG_2692_7.jpg

8_IMG_2693_8.jpg

These ones in the corner have survived quite nicely. I have been in some old wrecked pubs and someone’s nicked the old seating!

11_IMG_2696_11.jpg

You can always find shoes, socks and even underwear in these places. Handy if you are on a budget.

12_IMG_2697_12.jpg

@dizzydiscovery was apprehensive about the stairs, I just went right up. These are good and solid compared to some of them.

13_IMG_2698_13.jpg

Upstairs had a little more light courtesy of the natural air-conditioning system fitted. No windows works well to keep the air flowing and that lovely fresh aroma intact.

14_IMG_2699_14.jpg

15_IMG_2700_15.jpg

Some of the floorings were a little ropey but it’s only a 12-foot drop, not too bad considering.

16_IMG_2701_16.jpg

Now, this room was a little strange and had better décor than any of the others. A made bed says to me someone does sleep here at least some of the time.

18_IMG_2703_18.jpg

So this bit was a little more dangerous than usual.

19_IMG_2704_19.jpg

The top floor is always the most fun, and this time the stairs were a wee little squidgier.

Once up there, it was about as dangerous as the middle floor, which is moderate.

22_IMG_2707_22.jpg

25_IMG_2710_25.jpg

…’if walking across here scares you then you’re in the wrong business’…

Use the beams and hold on to anything that looks remotely solid.

24_IMG_2709_24.jpg

27_IMG_2712_27.jpg

I was surprised to find the roof was remarkably intact. Otherwise, the upper floors may not have been accessible.

28_IMG_2713_28.jpg

26_IMG_2711_26.jpg

I can handle moderate and dangerous, but when it becomes deadly then I value my knees, legs, and balls a little too much.

29_IMG_2714_29.jpg

Descending the stairs was a little touchy, and very dark. As per normal, one needs a big light in order to see anything.

31_IMG_2716_31.jpg

If you visit The Adelphi hoping to get in, unless things have radically changed in the last 4 weeks you may well be in luck.

Don't expect relics, old papers, vintage dildos, cans of untouched beer, packs of woodbine cigarettes from the old days or anything else of value.

33_IMG_2775_33.jpg

It is almost a shell and would be if the roof had given in. Say hello to the resident squatter who wasn't home for me. I'm quite sure there is one.

It's amazing the fire did not do more damage. Sad that people have to be desperate enough to sleep in a dump like that. They could get injured and not be found for a while.

Stay safe.

I see the sleeping bags and beds constantly, but they are never occupied. I did quite well from that fire to escape. The article says the fire service extended ladders to reach occupants and then realized there were none, duh!!!!

Yep, you like to go into dangerous places my friend.
That was once the most visited building in town and always a sad thing to see.
But such is life and time moves on!

It is next to a railway station so it would have been busy once. I can't find when it was closed, but its been at least 8 years according to the sources I found.

Left standing for 8 years? Either the town councilors are asleep, or it was involved in a contested deceased estate winding up. Or might be some other reason.

I am surprised it's still there considering the Reindeer was demolished. It's a right eyesore, but to me, it looks marvelous!

Old things have that special character my friend.
We have many historical churches over here and a heap of old buildings, but they are all kept in a pristine condition.
Well, not all, as the ones that the goverment uses are a bit tacky.
They make laws for others, but they don't obey their own laws.

Defo a squatter going by that bed!! Looks like it might have been an alright pub back in the very far away day!!

I never meet them, not a one! I know some other explorers have. They are usually terrified and think its plod coming to throw them out.

Understandably!! They do get menaced a bit by plod! It might be that big torch you have, they see you coming!!

this brought back memories of what we used to do as kids, exploring old derelict houses and factories. Great fun. Great post

It's that filter I use, not my photography!

I'm dying to ask what filter it is that you are using - I really like that look.

But if you don't want to reveal your trade secrets I fully understand!

It's no secret, I used AuroraHDR and the Cityscape filter. It tends to put a bluish tinge on things at times, and old walls and architecture lend themselves well to it.

There's a bulk mode, so I don't have the pain of doing them one-by-one.

Hi, I'm new on Hive)
It looks like you like to explore dangerous and broken houses @slobberchops

It feels as if you are reporting from a warzone as you show the photos from inside the building!

The places I go in are generally warzones. Some more so than others!

Would have expected whoever lived there to at least clean up the place a bit😃

I wonder what the thought is behind burning everything. Is it just that someone has the fire bug or do they think it will make it go away? With all of that stone I can't imagine the fires to much of anything but scorch the inside.

There are always idiots who want to torch places. These are good targets I suppose.

Oh my, imagine sleeping there at night..... Alone... But I can understand that a homeless person might not fear darkness at all, being in that particular situation. Somehow it makes you happy to know that someone else's ruin is a temporary home for somebody....If you only have had a nice package with food to leave it there as a gift, I am sure it would have been nice.

I liked the old archive photo. It shows how much things can degrade and how the passing of time can change even the greatest things and transform them into nothing. A hollow ghost of a building which used to be filled with life... Quite interesting to see this decay.

These photos are brilliant. I can't believe they leave these old buildings standing. I would have loved to go exploring like this as a teenager, however there is a shortage of old buildings in suburban Australia. The site that I work at has crappy old 70's poo brown buildings that have been heritage listed. The company wanted to knock them down and build new offices but weren't allowed. Now they're starting to look a bit like the photos above. In fact the photo with the milk crate looks a bit like my work desk from what I remember.

I wonder if the squatter is what keeps it standing. Like those orders where an area can't be disturbed if an endangered species is found to be living there. Endangered squatter keeps pub standing.

I’m curious as to what now stands where the Reindeer was. Have they built something new or is it an empty space? I ratchet like that round turret in the old photo. Shame that disappeared at some point.
