MY INSTITUTE (LOH CONTEST #154)

If money were no object and I could do with my time whatever I wished, what would I do with it? What would I create?

This week’s prompt actually required a little bit of thought because, the way my country’s economy is, any vision or dream you may have is limited by money. Hard work, luck, grace, and a social network are the only things that can help you if you don’t have money, and even that can be really tough.

I would build a sonography institute. A place where allied health professionals, especially graduates of physiology and anatomy like myself, can obtain all the necessary training to become good sonographers Sonographers are those who carry out the ultrasound imaging. They also interpret it and file a report.

In a country where health workers are travelling to work in another country on a daily basis, we need to support the health system. Ultrasound is among the first diagnostic processes any patient is required to carry out before treatment. The reasons are that it is safe, affordable, and reliable as long as it is carried out by an able sonographer.

How can we make more sonographers who are fast and can deliver accurate results for the good of the patient and the health sector at large? My institute is the answer. The students would be handpicked based on intelligence, discipline, and character.

I am a sonographer, and I believe that strengthening our health system by producing more sonographers is a dream I would love to afford. It is going to be my lifelong project. It is going to be my legacy, and I believe that I would have done my bit to make Nigeria a better place where you can trust our medical diagnosis.

Other things I would like to do, though, include taking my mother and sisters on one month’s shopping spree and relaxing at the beach every year. Lol. We work too hard, seriously.
