Castles or fortifications are structures that abound in many coastal points around the world. Nowadays most of them no longer fulfill the function for which they were built: to defend the territory, but have become tourist attractions thanks to their history and also to the beauty of the landscape where they are located.

Los castillos o fortificaciones son estructuras que abundan en muchos puntos costeros alrededor del mundo. Actualmente la mayoría de ellos ya no cumplen la función para la que fueron construidos: defender el territorio, sino que se han convertido en atracciones turísticas gracias a su historia y también a la belleza del paisaje donde están ubicados.

In these images I take you to Puerto Cabello, in Carabobo state (Venezuela), where you will find the San Felipe Castle, a work built by the Spaniards in the 18th century.

En estas imágenes los llevo hasta Puerto Cabello, en el estado Carabobo (Venezuela), allí se encuentra el Castillo San Felipe, una obra levantada por los españoles en el siglo XVIII.

As you will see, modernity surrounds this port, the containers, ships and in general all the commercial activity that takes place here daily, contrasts with the old walls of this historic place.

Como verán, la modernidad arropa este puerto, los contenedores, barcos y en general toda la actividad comercial que se lleva a cabo a diario aquí, contrasta con las viejas paredes de este lugar histórico.

To reach this fortification you must enter the Agustín Armario Naval Base. Although it preserves most of its structure, there are some parts that are in ruins.

Para llegar a esta fortificación hay que entrar a la Base Naval Agustín Armario. Aunque conserva la mayor parte de su estructura, hay algunas partes que están en ruinas.

It was built in honor of Felipe V de Borbón, King of Spain (1700-1746), with the purpose of defending this port. At that time there was the Royal Guipuzcoana Company, which was in charge of the commercial exchange between Venezuela and Europe.

Fue construida en honor a Felipe V de Borbón, rey de España (1700-1746), con el objetivo de defender este puerto. En esa época existía la Real Compañía Guipuzcoana, quien se encargaba del intercambio comercial entre Venezuela y Europa.

In those years, piracy was rampant on the seas, and the territories and resources of many conquered places were the object of disputes between the Spanish, French, Dutch and English.

En esos años la piratería hacía de las suyas en los mares, y los territorios y recursos de muchos lugares conquistados eran objeto de disputas entre españoles, franceses, holandeses e ingleses.

The San Felipe Castle, also called Libertador Castle, witnessed many events that marked the history of Venezuela. In 1812 the First Republic was lost here, and within its walls were imprisoned famous pro-independence characters such as Francisco de Miranda or Vicente Salias.

El Castillo San Felipe, también llamado Castillo Libertador, presenció muchos acontecimientos que marcaron la historia de Venezuela. En 1812 se perdió aquí la Primera República, y entre sus paredes estuvieron presos célebres personajes pro-independentistas como Francisco de Miranda o Vicente Salias.

In 1823, with a country that had finally won its struggle for independence from Spain, the castle passed into the hands of the patriots, but continued to be used for defensive purposes. In the 20th century it suffered attacks by European battleships due to debts of the government of Cipriano Castro with England and Germany and also at that time (1899-1935) it became a prison, where those who were considered political adversaries were deprived of their freedom.

En 1823, ya con un país que había finalmente vencido en su lucha por independizarse de España, el castillo pasó a manos de los patriotas, sin embargo siguió usándose con fines defensivos. En el siglo XX sufrió ataques de acorazados europeos debido a deudas del gobierno de Cipriano Castro con Inglaterra y Alemania y también en esa época (1899-1935) pasó a ser una cárcel, allí privaban de su libertad a los que eran considerados como adversarios políticos.

Fortunately, nowadays you are only imprisoned by its interesting history, is what it defends now, and without a doubt it is a highly recommended place to visit if you are in or planning to go to this region of Venezuela.

Afortunadamente hoy en día solamente quedas preso de su interesante historia, es lo que defiende ahora, y sin duda es un lugar muy recomendado para visitar si te encuentras o piensar ir a esta región de Venezuela.
