Last Wednesday, my sister invited me to a fundraising event to help stock a medicine cabinet for stray animals. It was organized by several animal rescuers in the city, and for a first-time event, quite a few people attended.

When we left for the location of the activity, some public courts, the weather was even sunny. People started arriving, and around 5:30 in the afternoon, the instructor began Bailocross, a combination of exercise and dance.

Everything was going well until about 15 minutes later, the sky became completely cloudy, and not only that, it turned a dark gray color, and well, a torrential downpour was coming.

We had to stop the activity and run off the court, we barely had time to take refuge under the narrow roof of an ice cream shop that was closed. But there were about 50 of us, so we couldn't all fit in there and we were getting wet.

We ran a little further, towards the restroom facilities, which had a wide corridor. There we all squeezed together, people and dogs, and we also used the women's restroom as a refuge, which was the only one open. Anyway, most of us were already soaked, but at least there we wouldn't get any wetter. I think we were there for over an hour, it was raining nonstop and the wind was wild too.

When the rain stopped, it was already dark, a little after 7:00 p.m., and people gradually started leaving. My sister and I left too, and when we came out of the park where the courts are, everything was flooded and there was no electricity. The city lacks good drainage, and we've had electricity rationing in Venezuela for about eight months now.

Using the headlights of passing cars and our phone flashlights, we made it to the bus stop to see if any buses were coming, but we had no luck and kept walking. Further along, we came across a fallen tree in the middle of the avenue that had taken down a power pole, and a few meters beyond that, a manhole cover had overflowed, creating a river in the street. It was pitch black, and I couldn't take any pictures of this somewhat apocalyptic scene 😅. Navigating broken and flooded sidewalks, we arrived about thirty minutes later, still without electricity (it came back on a couple of hours later), and just thinking about taking a shower and eating something delicious.

That sudden downpour sounds intense, especially having to cram into the restrooms with the dogs to wait it out. At least the fundraiser had a solid turnout before the weather completely wrecked the courts.

Yes, there was good attendance and the organizers managed to collect what was needed to start putting together the animals' first aid kit 🙂.

That's definitely one of the challenges of organizing an event, the weather. Because it can be so unpredictable. And if it rains, the whole program could be disrupted, especially if the venue is outdoors.

Yes, definitely, if you are organizing an outdoor event, you have to pay close attention to the weather forecast for that day. But it also can be unpredictable...
