Day of hiking in Las Delicias Mountain Range or Maracay Hotel Hill - Venezuela / Día de senderismo en la Serranía Las Delicias o Cerro del Hotel Maracay - Venezuela

I always try to do at least one mountain hike a month, whether it's to places I've never been to before or somewhere I haven't been in a while. Since it had been several years since I'd climbed the hill by the Hotel Maracay and my sister hadn't been there, it seemed like a good idea to go back.

Siempre trato de hacer aunque sea una ruta de montaña al mes, ya sea a lugares desconocidos o que tenga tiempo sin ir. Como tenía varios años que no subía al Cerro del Hotel Maracay y mi hermana no lo conocía, me pareció un buen plan volver a visitarlo.

We left very early for Maracay, the goal was to start climbing before 8:00 am because the heat there is intense, and we arrived at the starting point of the route right at that time. There were quite a few people, Las Delicias mountain range or Hotel Maracay Hill, as it's better known, is the most visited mountain trail in the city.

Salimos bien temprano para Maracay, la meta era comenzar a subir antes de las 8:00 am porque el calor allí es fuerte, y llegamos al punto de inicio de la ruta justo a esa hora. Había bastante gente, la serranía Las Delicias o Cerro del Hotel Maracay, como mejor se le conoce, es el sendero de montaña más visitado de la ciudad.

This mountain trail is part of Henri Pittier National Park, a vast area of ​​107,800 hectares that has been protected since 1937, being the first National Park decreed in Venezuela.

Este sendero de montaña forma parte del Parque Nacional Henri Pittier, una extensa área de 107.800 hectáreas que está protegida desde 1937, siendo el primer Parque Nacional decretado en Venezuela.

Since the Hotel Maracay was built nearby, people began to refer to it as the “Hill of the Hotel Maracay.” Designed by Venezuelan architect Luis Malaussena, the hotel opened in 1957 and is considered an icon of modernism in the country. In 2017, the hotel was renovated and has since been managed by the Marriott chain under the name Marriott Maracay Golf Resort. As you climb the mountain, you can see a panoramic view of this resort.

Como en sus alrededores se construyó el Hotel Maracay, la gente comenzó a identificarlo de esa manera: el cerro del Hotel Maracay. Esta obra diseñada por el arquitecto venezolano Luis Malaussena fue inaugurada en 1957 y es considerada como un emblema del modernismo en el país. En 2017 el hotel fue renovado y desde entonces lo administra la cadena Marriott y se llama Marriott Maracay Golf Resort. Cuando vas subiendo la montaña puedes ver una vista general de este complejo.

Only a short stretch at the beginning is paved, leading up to a park with exercise equipment.

Sólo un pequeño tramo del inicio está pavimentado, hasta llegar a un parque con instalaciones para hacer ejercicios.

This trail, although not very long (4.7 km), is quite challenging. I knew that, and I told my sister, who lost her patience a bit along the way because the sun showed us no mercy 😅.

Este sendero, aunque no es muy largo (4,7 Km) es bastante exigente. Yo sabía eso y se lo dije a mi hermana, que en el camino perdió un poco la paciencia porque el sol no nos tuvo compasión 😅.

As you can see in these photos, the drought and the fires started by idiots have wreaked havoc on these mountains. Sadly, it’s the same story every year, the vegetation is lost, and the animals that live here die or are forced to leave.

Como pueden ver en estas fotos, la sequía y los incendios provocados por estúpidos hicieron estragos en estas montañas. Tristemente cada año es lo mismo, se pierde la vegetación y los animales que aquí habitan mueren o son desplazados.

Most people who come here to train or simply to spend a different kind of day hike up to what's known as "The Container." The 4.7 km to get there are divided into several stations or points: La Planicie, La Matica, La Pared, and La Antena. There are signs there so people can see the distance and the elevation.

La mayoría de las personas que vienen a entrenar acá o simplemente a pasar un día diferente, suben hasta lo que se conoce como “El Container”. Los 4,7 km hasta allí están divididos en varias estaciones o puntos: La Planicie, La Matica, La Pared y La Antena. Hay carteles allí para que la gente vea la distancia y la altura.

There is almost no shade along this steep path. The heat only eases up a little when the sun hides behind a cloud, so you should bring at least 3 liters of water, long sleeves, and a cap or hat.

No hay casi sombra en todo este empinado camino. Sólo si el sol se oculta tras alguna nube el calor baja un poco, por lo que hay que llevar por lo menos 3 litros de agua, manga larga y gorra o sombrero.

After climbing for a little over an hour, we arrived at La Matica station. We had already covered 3 km, so we had 1.7 km left to go. From here on, the terrain becomes sandy, and with the heat, you start imagining an oasis, waterfalls, or a beautiful beach to dive into 😃. It's not that crazy, this is the coastal mountain range, and behind all these mountains lies the Caribbean Sea: Ocumare de la Costa, Choroní, and many more beaches.

Cuando ya teníamos un poco más de una hora en ascenso, llegamos a la estación La Matica. Habíamos recorrido ya 3 Km, así que nos faltaban 1,7 más. A partir de aquí el terreno se vuelve como arenoso, y con el calor que hace uno empieza a imaginar un oasis, cascadas o una rica playa para lanzarse 😃. No es algo loco, esta es la cordillera de la costa, y detrás de todas estas montañas está el mar Caribe: Ocumare de la Costa, Choroní y muchas más playas.

By this point, my sister was getting a little stubborn, saying to me, “we’re still not there yeeet!” 😂. And I replied, “you’re not turning back now, come on, you came here to reach the summit!”

En esta parte ya mi hermana estaba algo obstinada, diciéndome, "¡todaaaviiía, aún no llegamos!" 😂. Y yo le respondí, "a estas alturas no te vas a devolver, ¡ánimo, viniste a hacer cumbre!"

A few minutes later, we started to see some antennas, a sign that we were getting pretty close to the Container. My sister smiled a little 😆.

Unos minutos después comenzamos a ver unas antenas, señal de que ya estábamos bastante cerca de llegar al Container. Mi hermana sonrió un poco 😆.

There were only 700 meters left to the finish line, but you know how it is, when you’re going uphill in sweltering heat, it doesn’t feel like you’re getting there that fast.

Faltaban sólo 700 metros para la meta, pero ya saben, cuando es en ascenso y con calor sofocante no es tan rápido llegar.

We stopped for a few seconds to hydrate and also to enjoy the incredible views. From there, you can see Lake Valencia or Lake Tacarigua.

Nos detuvimos unos segundos para hidratarnos y también para disfrutar de las increíbles vistas. Desde allí se puede ver el Lago de Valencia o Lago Tacarigua.

The last part has a somewhat slippery surface, so you have to be careful. The Container is already coming into view, which is encouraging. My sister regained her joy 😄.

La última parte tiene un suelo algo resbaladizo, así que hay que ir con cuidado. El Container ya se asoma en el paisaje, así que eso anima. Mi hermana recuperó la alegría 😄.

After walking along a narrow path for the last few meters, there it is, the famous Container. At the top, there were a few people, already relaxing, celebrating, and eating.

Tras pasar por un senderito angosto los últimos metros, allí está el famoso Container. En la cima había unas cuantas personas, ya relajadas, celebrando y comiendo.

It was 10:12 a.m. when we reached the summit. The sun was shining brightly, and the only shade was behind the container. I don’t know how long that structure has been there, but it was used by the military and then abandoned.

Eran las 10:12 am cuando hicimos cumbre. El sol estaba en todo su esplendor y la única sombra era la que estaba tras el Container. No sé cuántos años tendrá allí esa estructura, pero era usada por el ejército y luego fue abandonada.

We took shelter in the shade to sit down and eat the food we’d brought, and then we also explored the inside of the container a bit. There’s no shortage of graffiti left by people there.

En esa sombra nos refugiamos para sentarnos y comer lo que habíamos llevado, y luego también exploramos un poco el container por dentro. No faltan los escritos de la gente allí.

There was also a cute little dog there, she must have come up with someone. She was wearing a collar, so she probably lives at the park ranger station or somewhere like that. All of us who were there felt sorry for her and gave her food and water. I’m not surprised to see this, because on so many of the hikes I’ve done, hiking dogs appear 😊.

Allí también estaba una linda perrita, seguramente subió acompañando a alguien. Tenía collar, así que probablemente vive en el puesto de guardaparques o algo así. Todos los que estábamos allí nos preocupamos por ella y le dimos comida y agua. No me extraña ver esto porque en muchísimas rutas que he hecho aparecen perros senderistas 😊.

We spent just over an hour at the Container. The view from there is spectacular, the city on one side and the beautiful mountains on the other. The effort to get there is definitely worth it.

Estuvimos en el Container poco más de una hora. El paisaje desde allí es espectacular, por un lado la ciudad y por otro las hermosas montañas. Sin duda el esfuerzo para llegar allí se ve recompensado.

Of course, the walk back was much faster, and by 12:30 p.m. we had finished the hike, which totaled 9.4 km round trip. I had run out of water about a kilometer before we arrived and was pretty thirsty, so before catching the bus back home, we bought some refreshing maltas 😋. Until the next adventure!

Por supuesto el regreso fue mucho más rápido, y ya a las 12:30 del mediodía terminamos la ruta, que en total, ida y vuelta fue de 9,4 Km. El agua se me había acabado como un kilómetro antes de llegar y estaba bastante sedienta, así que antes de tomar el autobús de regreso a casa compramos unas refrescantes maltas 😋. ¡Hasta la próxima aventura!
