Hiking between the city and the mountains with a bit of rock & roll
Hiking has been part of my life for several years now, so I'm always on the lookout for weekend plans to grab my backpack and go hiking wherever I can, preferably on new trails.
So it was this time, I heard that a hiking group was going to make a route that I didn't know and I went with my sister, the call was at 6:30 in the morning in the city of La Victoria (Venezuela).
This 8 km walk combined city and nature. We started from where the industrial zone of La Victoria begins, on Interindustrial Avenue, and continued to a bridge over which the highway passes.
Passing under the bridge we cross to the first street on the left.
Many companies that produce different things are established here. This area was developed in the 1960s and food, metalworking and light manufacturing industries, among others, were installed here.
You can tell that this area was made with planning because the blocks are well defined and there are many trees that beautify the environment and provide food, look at those mangoes!
However, due to the crisis that Venezuela has gone through in recent years, many industries have closed and others are not working at 100%, so the abandonment of some spaces is noticeable.
One of the best known companies here is IVECO, of Italian origin, which manufactures different types of vehicles: light, medium, heavy, buses, among others.
Our hiking continued there, as it was Sunday there was almost no one on the streets, few companies work on weekends, and it was also very early in the morning.
The terrain began to rise a little when we reached a curve, some people were jogging, now they had to make more of an effort.
Although high walls and ungraceful gates abound around here, I found some remarkable things to photograph, such as the ceilings of these sheds.
Then some hills began to appear in this industrial landscape, a sign that we were not far from the dirt road part of the route.
But first, a little more unfunny walls 😁.
Up ahead was a hydration point that had been set up by the organizers of the route.
I had brought my water but I wanted to drink what they offered, a green liquid that I thought would be lemon but the truth is that it tasted like cough syrup hahaha, not nice...
The road continued uphill and now we had to be careful because cars were passing in both directions.
In the hills behind the industrial zone there are many houses and plantations.
The weather was cool, there was some cloud cover, which protected us from the sun.
My attention was drawn to these seeds that I saw on the ground, they were from a huge tree that was there and I couldn't identify.
The drought with its fires has wreaked havoc in several parts of the country, here has been no exception, but fortunately some scattered rains have already arrived these days.
After about half an hour of walking, we arrived at a detour where the overland route began.
We went into the mountain and I felt cooler here, plus the views are very nice, you see the whole city.
In this part the sky cleared and the sun appeared with some strength, but we found several spots with trees that provided shade.
Look at this completely burned ground.
However, the air did not smell of burning here but of vegetation, there are eucalyptus and pine trees in the area.
I stopped for a while where you can see the cityscape so my sister could take a picture of me.
I saw many fallen branches and trees in this part, probably due to the fires. It is good to be attentive to the sounds, you never know if at any moment you hear a "crack" and a tree falls nearby.
We were a couple of kilometers away from the finish line, the path went downhill and we could see the city closer.
When we reached the flat, we had the highway on one side.
At 8:45 a.m. my sister and I completed the 8 km, which took us a little over an hour. About a thousand people participated in this hike, arriving at the finish line little by little, each one at their own pace.
The Monument of the Youth of La Victoria was the point of arrival, where the organizers had several activities for all who participated.
There was free fruit and water for everyone and stalls for those who wanted to buy other things.
There was also an organization that supports people with autism, giving information and giving away these cute balloons.
With my refreshing watermelon and an energizing banana.
To liven up the event, in which they also raffled off some prizes (I didn't win anything 😅), there was a rock band that offered a good repertoire of famous rock songs in Spanish.
And that's how this Sunday day of hiking ended, jumping a bit with the energy of rock.
All photos are my property and were taken with a Fujifilm FinePix XP90 digital camera
