In Ushuaia Prison - Argentina 🇦🇷 En la cárcel de Ushuaia - Argentina

No, I was not arrested, or maybe I was, but it was something voluntary, for a couple of hours I was inside the old prison of Ushuaia to visit the museums that now operate there, a really unmissable place if you are traveling through this city in the Argentine Patagonia.

No, no fui detenida, o quizás sí, pero fue algo voluntario, por un par de horas estuve dentro del antiguo presidio de Ushuaia para visitar los museos que ahora funcionan allí, un lugar realmente imperdible si te encuentras de viaje por esta ciudad de la Patagonia argentina.

After the excursion we did on the Beagle Channel, in the afternoon we decided to go to the Maritime and Presidio Museum, which is near the center of the city, so we got there walking. When Ushuaia was founded, the idea of the government of the time was that it would be a penal colony, so this building that housed the prisoners has many stories to tell.

Después de la excursión que hicimos por el Canal Beagle, en la tarde decidimos ir al Museo Marítimo y del Presidio, que queda cerca del centro de la ciudad, por lo que llegamos allí caminando. Cuando se fundó Ushuaia, la idea del gobierno de la época era que fuera una colonia penal, así que esta edificación que albergó a los presos tiene muchas historias que contar.

For example, look at the train in the photo below, it is on the outskirts of the museum and is a reminder that from this prison the locomotive full of prisoners left for the forests to cut trees and bring wood and other materials needed for construction and heating. The End of the World Train, a station that connected with this building and which I told you about in a previous post, is 8 km from the center of the city, where you can learn more about this history.

Por ejemplo, miren el tren en la foto que sigue, está en las afueras del museo y es un recuerdo de que desde esta cárcel salía la locomotora llena de presos rumbo a los bosques para talar árboles y traer madera y otros materiales necesarios para la construcción y la calefacción. A 8 km del centro de la ciudad está El Tren del Fin del Mundo, una estación que conectaba con esta edificación y del que les hablé en una publicación anterior, allí se puede conocer más a fondo esta historia.

The first thing that strikes the attention is its design, this prison that began to rise in 1902 and was completed in 1920, was built with the labor of the detainees themselves, and its design, made by the Italian engineer Catello Muratgia, is of the panopticon type (its interior part can be seen from a single point), this with the aim that the surveillance of the areas was more efficient. I didn't have a drone to capture the whole building, so I looked for this photo on the Internet to show you what it looks like.

Lo primero que llama la atención es su diseño, este presidio que comenzó a levantarse en 1902 y se terminó en 1920, fue construido con mano de obra de los mismos detenidos, y su diseño, realizado por el ingeniero italiano Catello Muratgia, es del tipo panóptico (su parte interior puede ser vista desde un solo punto), esto con el objetivo de que la vigilancia de las áreas fuera más eficiente. No tenía un dron para captar el edificio completo, por eso busqué esta foto en Internet para que vean cómo es.

Upon entering we were given several brochures, including one with the history of the place, I share a couple of images for those who are interested in knowing a little more, the texts are both in Spanish and English.

Al entrar nos dieron varios folletos, entre ellos uno con la historia del lugar, les comparto un par de imágenes para los que estén interesados en saber un poco más, los textos están tanto en español como en inglés.

As I mentioned at the beginning, several things work in this building, first we went to the Maritime Museum, which opened its doors in 1995. In its rooms we could see exhibitions about the maritime history of this Argentinean region, from its discovery, the way of life of the natives who lived there, then the arrival of colonization, up to the most modern era.

Como comenté al principio, en esta edificación funcionan varias cosas, fuimos primero al Museo Marítimo, el cual abrió sus puertas en 1995. En sus salas pudimos ver exposiciones sobre la historia marítima de esta región argentina, desde su descubrimiento, el modo de vida de los indígenas que vivían allí, luego la llegada de la colonización, hasta la era más moderna.

In one of the rooms we meet a pirate, Pascualín Rispoli, who is said to be "the last pirate of the Beagle Channel", an Italian adventurer who arrived in America looking for his father, when he found him he settled in this region and then became known for being involved in illicit activities such as smuggling animal skins, liquor, and especially for participating in escapes that occurred in the prison of Ushuaia. His schooner, Sokolo, was abandoned on the border with Chile.

En una de las salas nos topamos con un pirata, se trata de Pascualín Rispoli, de quien se dice fue “el último pirata del Canal Beagle”, un aventurero italiano que llegó a América buscando a su padre, al encontrarlo se estableció en esta región y luego se hizo conocido por estar involucrado en actividades ilícitas como contrabando de pieles de animales, aguardiente, y sobre todo por participar en fugas que ocurrieron en el presidio de Ushuaia. Su goleta, Sokolo, quedó abandonada en la frontera con Chile.

Then we went to the most impressive part, which is the Presidio Museum, where you can tour the pavilions and see the cells, which are kept as they were. Some of them have been painted inside, like this one that shows an inmate with the uniform they used to wear.

Luego pasamos a la parte más impactante, que es el Museo del Presidio, allí se pueden recorrer los pabellones y ver las celdas, las cuales se mantienen tal como eran. Algunas de ellas han sido pintadas en su interior, como esta que muestra a un recluso con el uniforme que usaban.

I didn't take many pictures there because the lighting was very soft and my camera didn't capture the place well, they came out dark, but I must say that the place transmits a heavy energy, no doubt many horrible stories happened there. There was a cell that had a hole made in the door for visitors to take pictures, it looks funny, but I felt some claustrophobia when I went in for my mom to take one of me, I thought: it must be desperate to be imprisoned...

No hice muchas fotos allí porque la iluminación era muy suave y mi cámara no captaba bien el lugar, salían oscuras, pero debo decir que el sitio transmite una energía pesada, sin duda muchas historias horribles sucedieron allí. Había una celda a la que le habían hecho un orificio en la puerta para que los visitantes se tomaran fotos, se ve gracioso, pero sentí algo de claustrofobia cuando entré para que mi mamá me tomara una, pensé: debe ser desesperante estar presa...

On the tour there are many things to see, such as photos of the enclosure and the inmates, furniture, paintings and other objects made by them, the shackles they wore when they went out to work in the construction of the city, letters they wrote to their loved ones, in short, with all this one can get an idea of what it was like to live in this dreaded prison, the southernmost in the world.

En el recorrido hay muchas cosas para ver, como fotos del recinto y los reclusos, muebles, pinturas y otros objetos hechos por ellos, los grilletes que llevaban cuando salían a trabajar en la construcción de la ciudad, cartas que escribían a sus seres queridos, en fin, con todo esto uno puede hacerse una idea de cómo era vivir en esta temida prisión, la más austral del mundo.
