Every time a new World Cup rolls around, I dust off some of the memorabilia I’ve kept from this great event and remember how my love for this wonderful sport began. In my small collection, I have magazines, newspapers, and trading card albums, and it’s the latter that I’ll be talking about today—specifically, the first album I ever owned: the one from Italy ’90. I've been wanting to write this post for a long time, and now that a few days have passed since the end of the 2026 Cup, I was finally able to sit down and write it 😉.

Cada vez que llega una nueva edición del mundial de fútbol, desempolvo algunas cosas que conservo de este gran evento y recuerdo cómo comenzó mi afición por este maravilloso deporte. En mi pequeña colección tengo revistas, periódicos y álbumes de barajitas, y es de esto último que les hablaré en esta ocasión, concretamente del primer álbum que tuve: el de Italia '90. Tenía mucho tiempo queriendo hacer esta publicación, y ya pasados unos días desde que terminó la Copa 2026, por fin me pude sentar a escribirla 😉.

It was because of my dad that I started to like soccer. He followed the Italian league on weekends, and while there was a match on, my sister and I couldn't watch cartoons on TV 😂. Of course that annoyed us, we were just little girls, but then we watched a few Euro Cup matches and started to get into it, next came the 1990 World Cup in Italy, we discovered the sticker album, traded stickers with each other and at school, and that’s how we got hooked forever on the “beautiful game.”

Fue por mi papá que me empezó a gustar el fútbol. Él seguía la liga italiana los fines de semana, y mientras había partido, mi hermana y yo no podíamos ver comiquitas en la televisión 😂. Claro que eso nos molestaba, éramos unas niñas, pero luego vimos algunos partidos de la Eurocopa y le fuimos agarrando el gusto, después vino el Mundial Italia '90, descubrimos el álbum de barajitas, las intercambiábamos entre nosotras y en la escuela, y así quedamos enganchadas para siempre al "deporte rey".

Across from the building where we lived in Caracas, there was a magazine kiosk where we saw the World Cup sticker album, and we asked our dad to give us money to buy one, one for each of us. After that, we bought packs of trading cards almost every day, it was so exciting 😃. We started filling it up about a month before the championship began. This album is from a Venezuelan publisher called Reyauca, which also put out albums featuring cartoons and popular TV shows. Back then, we didn’t know about the famous Panini brand.

Frente al edificio donde vivíamos, en Caracas, había un quiosco de revistas donde vimos el álbum del mundial, y le pedimos a mi papá que nos diera dinero para comprarlo, uno para cada una. Después, casi todos los días comprábamos los sobres con barajitas, era algo muy emocionante 😃. Empezamos a llenarlo como un mes antes de que empezara el campeonato. Este álbum es de una editorial venezolana llamada Reyauca, que también sacaba álbumes de comiquitas y series populares. En ese entonces nosotras no conocíamos la famosa marca Panini.

Flipping through this album recently, I realized that this sporting event has undergone significant changes over the years. For example, 24 teams participated in Italy '90, while the 2026 edition featured 48, double the number!

Al hojear este álbum actualmente, me di cuenta de que este evento deportivo ha pasado por grandes cambios a lo largo de los años. Por ejemplo, en Italia '90 participaron 24 selecciones, y en la edición de 2026 participaron 48, ¡el doble!

My handwriting has changed a lot too, it's funny to see my childish writing 😄. My dad gave me this World Cup calendar. Back then, this brand gave them away with the purchase of deodorant or aftershave.

También mi letra ha cambiado mucho, es gracioso ver mi escritura infantil 😄. Este calendario del mundial me lo dio mi papá. En esos días, esta marca lo regalaba con la compra del desodorante o la loción después de afeitar.

So let's take a closer look to the star of this post: the Italy '90 album. As you can see, time has taken its toll on the pages. A few years ago, I covered the edges of all the pages with plastic tape to protect them from creases and tears. The first thing featured here are the stadiums, 12 in total, which I was fortunately able to complete.

Veamos pues en detalle al protagonista de esta publicación, el álbum de Italia '90. Como pueden ver, el tiempo ha dejado un poco su huella en las páginas. Hace unos años, cubrí con cinta plástica los bordes de todas las hojas para protegerlas de dobleces y roturas. Lo primero que se presenta aquí son los estadios, 12 en total, que afortunadamente logré completar.

The album then presents the teams in alphabetical order. On two pages, you'll find information about each federation and how they qualified for the World Cup, along with stickers featuring their crest, manager, starting eleven, and 17 of their key players.

Seguidamente el álbum presenta las selecciones por orden alfabético. En dos páginas encontramos la información de cada federación y cómo clasificó a la cita mundialista, las barajitas correspondientes a su escudo, director técnico, imagen de la oncena y 17 de sus jugadores principales.

Coincidentally, the first two teams listed, Germany and Argentina, are the ones that played in the final of Italy '90, with Germany emerging as champion.

Casualmente, las dos primeras selecciones que aparecen, Alemania y Argentina, son las que disputaron la final de Italia '90, quedando Alemania como campeona.

These trading cards weren't self-adhesive, you had to use glue to attach them. Furthermore, you could only apply glue to the top half, the other half had to remain free so you could lift it and see the players' information.

Estas barajitas no eran adhesivas, había que utilizar pega para fijarlas. Además, sólo debías ponerle pega en la mitad superior, la otra debía quedar libre para poder levantarla y ver los datos de los jugadores.

I remember one time we ran out of glue and didn't want to wait for my mom to buy us some the next day, we were desperate to stick the trading cards in our albums, so we used some shoemaker's glue we had at home. The whole apartment ended up smelling like that strong glue for quite a while 😂.

Recuerdo que una vez se nos acabó la pega y no quisimos esperar que mi mamá nos la comprara al día siguiente, estábamos desesperadas por pegar las barajitas en los álbumes, así que usamos una pega de zapatero que había en la casa. Todo el apartamento terminó por un buen rato impregnado con ese fuerte olor que tiene este pegamento 😂.

As you'll see in the photos, there are some empty spots in some teams. For example, I was missing the Maradona card. There are always players who are hard to find in the albums. Anyway, in total, I was only missing 17 cards to complete the album.

Como irán viendo en las fotos, hay espacios vacíos en algunas selecciones. Por ejemplo, me faltó la barajita de Maradona. Siempre hay jugadores que son difíciles de conseguir en los álbumes. De todos modos, en total sólo me faltaron 17 barajitas para completar el álbum.

Of course, the trading cards I kept getting duplicates of were the ones featuring the, let's say, underdog teams.

Por supuesto que las barajitas que más me salían repetidas eran las de las selecciones, digamos, menos favoritas.

Since it was the first World Cup I’d ever watched, I knew almost nothing about Brazil’s reputation. Well, I knew what my dad had told me. For him, the best national team he’d ever seen was the 1970 Brazilian team. But the 1990 team turned out to be a disappointment, they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Argentina.

Como era el primer mundial que veía, no sabía casi nada de la fama de Brasil. Bueno, sabía lo que me contaba mi papá. Para él, la mejor selección que había visto en el mundo era la Brasil de 1970. Pero la de 1990 resultó una decepción, cayó en 8vos de final contra Argentina.

Colombia, on the other hand, did put on a memorable performance. In the group stage, they tied with Germany and advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time. Like many others, what I remember most about this team is Valderrama’s lion-like mane and goalkeeper Higuita’s crazy plays 😄.

La que sí tuvo una actuación memorable fue Colombia. En la fase de grupos empató con Alemania y clasificó a 8vos de final por primera vez. Como muchos, lo que más recuerdo de este equipo es la melena leonina de Valderrama y las jugadas locas del portero Higuita 😄.

Flipping through this album not only reminds me of moments from the first World Cup I saw, but I also think things like: the footballers' physiques were very different, and their image was too.

Al hojear este álbum, no sólo me vienen a la mente momentos del primer Mundial que vi, también pienso cosas como: el físico de los futbolistas era muy diferente, y su imagen también.

This is because training methods have evolved and are different nowadays, so their bodies develop differently. Regarding their image, for some years now there's been a noticeable over-production of many things 😆: tattoos, hairstyles, etc. In 1990, most footballers looked like ordinary people. Do you agree?

Esto tiene que ver con que los entrenamientos han evolucionado y se trabaja diferente hoy en día, así que sus cuerpos se desarrollan de manera distinta. En cuanto a la imagen, desde hace algunos años se observa como una sobre producción en muchos 😆: tatuajes, peinados, etc. En 1990, la mayoría de los futbolistas se veían como gente común y corriente. ¿Ustedes opinan lo mismo?

Let's continue looking at the teams, Cameroon and the United Arab Emirates. As you can see, the album only gives one page to each of them. I suppose that because they are small countries in terms of football, they were discriminated against here. It's unfair, don't you think? Paradoxically, Cameroon was the sensation of that World Cup, becoming the first African team to reach the quarterfinals. I remember Milla (who wasn't included in this album), a 38-year-old player who scored several goals and celebrated with his signature dance at the corner flag 😃.

Sigamos viendo los equipos, Camerún y Emiratos Árabes. Como ven, el álbum les da sólo una página a cada uno. Supongo que al ser países pequeños futbolísticamente, los discriminaron así aquí. Es injusto, ¿no les parece? Paradójicamente, Camerún fue la sensación de ese mundial, siendo el primer equipo africano en clasificar a unos cuartos de final. Recuerdo a Milla (quien no fue incluido en este álbum), jugador de 38 años que marcó varios goles y los celebró con su característico baile en el punto de córner 😃.

Another point to note is that several countries that participated in Italy '90 no longer exist. The first one to appear in this album is Czechoslovakia.

Otra cosa a destacar es que varios países que participaron en Italia '90 ya no existen. El primero en aparecer en este álbum es Checoslovaquia.

I remember that the Czechoslovakian team performed well in that World Cup, advancing to the quarterfinals, where they lost to Germany. The dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991 contributed to the collapse of the country's government and its division. By the end of 1992, this process had given rise to the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Recuerdo que el equipo checoslovaco tuvo una buena actuación en este mundial, llegó hasta cuartos de final, donde perdió contra Alemania. La disolución de la Unión Soviética en diciembre de 1991 influyó en la caída del gobierno de este país y en su división. A finales de 1992, este proceso dio origen a República Checa y Eslovaquia.

I don't remember much about Egypt, but while flipping through the album these days, I was surprised to see that one of the players from that era (number 213), Hossam Hassan, is the coach of the Egyptian national team that participated in the 2026 World Cup.

De Egipto no recuerdo gran cosa, pero al hojear el álbum en estos días, me sorprendí al ver que uno de los jugadores de esa época (el número 213), Hossam Hassan, es el entrenador de la selección egipcia que participó en el mundial de 2026.

Fourteen teams from Europe, six from the Americas, two from Africa, one from the Middle East, and one from Asia participated in Italy '90.

En Italia '90 participaron catorce equipos de Europa, seis del continente americano, dos de África, uno de Oriente Medio y uno de Asia.

From Europe, my favorites were the Netherlands and Italy, and from the Americas, Argentina. Since my sister and I had seen the Netherlands win the European Championship before this World Cup, we liked that team, and Italy because it was my dad's favorite.

De Europa mis favoritos eran Holanda e Italia, y de América, Argentina. Como antes de este mundial mi hermana y yo habíamos visto a Holanda ganar la Eurocopa, nos gustaba ese equipo, e Italia porque era el favorito de mi papá.

The Dutch team had many stars: Koeman, Rijkaard, Gullit, Van Basten... But they could only advance to the round of 16, where they lost to Germany. This was my first World Cup disappointment.

El equipo holandés tenía muchas estrellas: Koeman, Rijkaard, Gullit, Van Basten... Pero sólo pudo avanzar hasta 8vos de final, donde perdió con Alemania. Esta fue mi primera decepción mundialista.

I remember that England's goalkeeper, Shilton, was one of the oldest players in the tournament: 40 years old. And their best players included Gascoigne, Platt, and Lineker. They made it to the semifinals, where they lost to Germany, and they also lost to Italy in the third-place match.

De Inglaterra recuerdo que su portero, Shilton, era uno de los jugadores de más edad del torneo: 40 años. Y como sus mejores futbolistas figuraban Gascoigne, Platt y Lineker. As for Ireland, it also had a standout performance, advancing to the quarterfinals, where it lost to Italy. Later, I learned that there are two Irelands: the Republic of Ireland (the one that competed in Italy ’90) and Northern Ireland, and each participates independently in different competitions. You see, soccer is also a great way to learn about geography and politics 😉.

En cuanto a Irlanda, también tuvo una actuación destacada, llegando hasta 4tos de final, donde perdió con Italia. Luego supe que existen dos Irlandas: República de Irlanda (la que estuvo en Italia '90) e Irlanda del Norte, y cada una participa de forma independiente en las diferentes competiciones. Ya ven, el fútbol también sirve para aprender de geografía y política 😉.

One of my favorites, Italy, made it to the semifinals, where they played against my other favorite, Argentina, and lost. If you start following football as a child, you will experience suffering at a very young age, but hey, you'll eventually learn that it's not such a big deal 😆. There's a reason they say “soccer is like life”...

Uno de mis favoritos, Italia, llegó a semifinales, y jugó con mi otro favorito, Argentina, y perdió. Si empiezas a seguir el fútbol desde niño, conocerás el sufrimiento a muy corta edad, pero bueno, luego aprenderás que no es para tanto 😆. Por algo dicen que "el fútbol es como la vida"...

I remember almost all the players on that team, some of them, like Salvatore Schillaci, aren't in this album. He was a reserve, but his performance earned him a spot in the starting lineup, and he even became the World Cup's top scorer.

De este equipo recuerdo a casi todos los jugadores, algunos de ellos, como Salvatore Schillaci, no aparecen en este álbum. Él era suplente, pero por su rendimiento se volvió titular y hasta se convirtió en el máximo goleador del mundial.

Luckily, I got all the trading cards for the Italian team. There were some really great players on that team who went down in history: goalkeeper Zenga, and defenders Bergomi, Maldini, and Baresi.

The USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) is another country that participated in Italy '90 and no longer exists. They didn't fare well in the tournament, being eliminated in the group stage.

La URSS (Unión de Repúblicas Socialistas Soviéticas) fue otro de los países que estuvo en Italia '90 y que ya no existe. No le fue bien en el torneo, quedó eliminada en la fase de grupos.

The penultimate selection in the album is Uruguay, who advanced to the Round of 16 but were eliminated by Italy, the host nation and overwhelming favorite. The player I remember most from this team is Enzo Francescoli, one of the most outstanding South American footballers of that era.

La penúltima selección del álbum es Uruguay, que avanzó a 8vos de final pero fue eliminada por Italia, la anfitriona y gran favorita. El jugador que más recuerdo de este equipo es Enzo Francescoli, uno de los futbolistas sudamericanos más destacados de esa época.

And finally, we have Yugoslavia, another country that no longer exists. Its dissolution and division occurred shortly after this World Cup, between 1991 and 1992. Major political and ethnic conflicts triggered wars and its fragmentation into six new countries: Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, North Macedonia, and Kosovo.

Y para finalizar, tenemos a Yugoslavia, otro país que ya no existe. Su disolución y división se dio poco después de este mundial, entre los años 1991 y 1992. Grandes conflictos políticos y étnicos desencadenaron guerras y su fragmentación en seis nuevos países: Croacia, Serbia y Montenegro, Bosnia y Herzegovina, Eslovenia, Macedonia del Norte y Kosovo.

Yugoslavia eliminated Spain in the round of 16 and lost to Argentina in the quarterfinals. The players I remember from that team are Dejan Savićević and Dragan Stojković.

The album also offered the option to claim prizes if you got some special trading cards and sent in the coupon found on the last page, while also correctly predicting the final results. Since I never got those trading cards, I didn't even think about it 😄.

El álbum también daba la opción de reclamar premios si te salían unas barajitas especiales y mandabas el cupón que traía en la última página, acertando además los resultados finales. Como nunca obtuve esas barajitas, ni pensé en eso 😄.
