Revisiting Tres Cruces or Las Letras hill - Venezuela / Revisitando el cerro Tres Cruces o Las Letras - Venezuela

When it comes to excursions, I like to go to new places, but if I've only done a route once and the experience was good, I usually repeat it.

Cuando de excursiones se trata, me gusta ir a lugares nuevos, pero si sólo he hecho una ruta una vez y la experiencia fue buena, suelo repetir.

That's how it was with this mountain route located in La Victoria, Aragua state (Venezuela), called Tres Cruces or Las Letras hill. I climbed this mountain about four years ago, but it was during the rainy season, and this time I went during the dry season. So the landscapes looked different.

Así fue con esta ruta de montaña que se encuentra en La Victoria, estado Aragua (Venezuela) y se llama cerro Tres Cruces o Las Letras. Subí esta montaña hace como cuatro años, pero fue en época de lluvias, y esta vez fui en temporada de sequía. Entonces los paisajes se veían diferentes.

We also went up with a new group of people. My sister saw the announcement on social media and we decided to go. At first, we thought it was a new route for us because we knew this hill as Las Letras, and they promoted it as Tres Cruces. Then they told us that's also its name.

También subimos con un grupo nuevo de gente. Mi hermana vio la convocatoria por redes sociales y nos animamos a ir. Al principio pensamos que era una ruta nueva para nosotras porque conocíamos este cerro como Las Letras y ellos lo promocionaron como Tres Cruces. Luego nos dijeron que también se le llama así.

This mountain is located behind the city hospital, and the trailhead is in a residential area next door. We started climbing very early, at 6:30 am.

Esta montaña queda detrás del hospital de la ciudad, y la entrada al sendero se encuentra en una urbanización que está al lado. Comenzamos a subir bien temprano, a las 6:30 am.

It's only about 2 km to the summit, but the trail is quite steep. As you can see in the photos, the fires that have occurred during this dry season have affected these mountains. There's a lot of sepia tones in these landscapes.

Son apenas 2 Km hasta la cima, pero el camino es bastante empinado. Como pueden observar en las fotos, los incendios que ha habido en esta temporada de sequía afectaron estas montañas. Muchos tonos sepia en estos paisajes.

The contrast came from a few trees with their fresh green leaves. I don't remember what they're called, but I know they're very fire-resistant, and no matter how badly they're scorched, they spring back to life as if nothing had happened.

El contraste lo ponían algunos árboles con sus frescas hojas verdes. No recuerdo cómo se llaman, pero sé que son muy resistentes al fuego, y por más chamuscados que queden, luego renacen como si nada.

Since the trail is very steep, you quickly gain elevation, and when you look back, you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the city and beyond.

Como el sendero es muy empinado, rápidamente se alcanza altura, y al mirar atrás, se pueden disfrutar hermosas vistas panorámicas de la ciudad y más allá.

There were more than 20 of us, but as always happens on hikes, everyone goes at their own pace and the group spreads out. But the trail was well-marked, so there was no danger of getting lost.

Éramos más de 20 personas, pero como siempre pasa en las excursiones, cada quien va a su ritmo y el grupo se dispersa. Pero el camino estaba marcado, así que no había peligro de perderse.

Going alone for a while has its advantages, like being able to stop and take in the details. Look at these ants, they were crossing the path, maybe they were out on a hike too 😄.

Ir sola durante un tramo tiene sus ventajas, como por ejemplo detenerte a observar detalles. Miren estas hormigas, estaban cruzando el camino, quizás también andaban de excursión 😄.

And take a look at that lake in the next photo. It’s Lake Zuata, a town near La Victoria.

Y miren también esa laguna que se ve en la siguiente foto. Es la laguna de Zuata, una poblacion cercana a La Victoria.

We were almost at the summit, and that’s the most challenging part of the trail. You have to climb carefully over some rocks.

Faltaba poco para llegar a la cima, y esa es la parte más desafiante de la ruta. Hay que subir cuidadosamente por unas rocas.

After a little over an hour, I reached the summit. My sister arrived about 10 minutes later.

Luego de poco más de una hora, llegué a la cima. Mi hermana llegó unos 10 minutos después.

The first time I climbed this hill, there was nothing there, now there’s a sign marking it and some benches. All of this was set up by hiking groups from the city.

La primera vez que subí a este cerro no había nada allí, ahora hay un letrero que lo identifica y unos bancos. Todo esto ha sido colocado por grupos senderistas de la ciudad.

As for the two names of this hill, I knew it was called Las Letras (The Letters) because years ago some students arranged the initials of their university there with stones, and you could read them from below. But I didn’t know why it was also called Tres Cruces (Three Crosses), so I asked, and a man told me it’s because there used to be some crosses at the top a long time ago, at some point they got damaged and were removed. And well, because of these stories, both names are valid.

En cuanto a los dos nombres de este cerro, yo sabía que le decían Las Letras porque hace años unos estudiantes formaron las iniciales de su universidad allí con piedras y estas se leían desde abajo. Pero no sabía por qué también le decían Tres Cruces, así que pregunté y un señor me dijo que es porque allí había hace mucho tiempo unas cruces en la cima, en algún momento se dañaron y las quitaron. Y bueno, por estas historias ambos nombres son válidos.

Although affected by the drought, as you can see, these mountainous landscapes are gorgeous, and they are gradually regaining their greenery. From here you can continue walking for about 18 km to reach Colonia Tovar, Venezuela’s German village.

Aunque afectados por la sequía, como pueden ver, estos paisajes montañosos son preciosos, y poco a poco van recuperando el verdor. Desde aquí se puede seguir caminando unos 18 Km y llegar a la Colonia Tovar, el pueblo alemán de Venezuela.

We spent about an hour at the summit, eating the food we’d brought, resting, and, of course, taking photos.

Estuvimos en la cima alrededor de una hora, comiendo lo que llevamos, descansando, y por supuesto tomando fotos.

Going back to Tres Cruces or Las Letras hill was a great idea. As I mentioned at the beginning, the scenery changes a lot depending on the time of year, and even though it was the same place, seeing it during the dry season was a new experience for us 😉. Until the next adventure!

Revisitar el cerro Tres Cruces o Las Letras fue un excelente plan. Como dije al principio, los paisajes cambian mucho dependiendo de la época del año, y aunque el lugar era el mismo, verlo en temporada de sequía fue algo nuevo para nosotras 😉. ¡Hasta la próxima aventura!
