The fortress of Cumaná | Monomad challenge [ENG-ESP]

Almost every important city or town in Venezuela that is located near the coast has a fortress to protect its territory from the attacks they could suffer in colonial times, when they were built by the Spaniards.

Cumaná, capital of Sucre state (Venezuela) couldn't be an exception, considering that it was the first city founded on the South American mainland in 1515. The Castle of San Antonio de la Eminencia is located there, on the Pan de Azúcar hill in the San Francisco neighborhood.

Although there is no exact date of when this fortress was built, it is believed that it was between 1659 and 1686. Pirates used to appear very frequently and from there the Gulf of Cariaco and the Araya peninsula can be perfectly observed. Although it was damaged by earthquakes in 1853 and 1929, it was restored and looks very well maintained. The objects that are preserved, such as the cannons in the courtyard, make it easy to imagine the movement that took place here when there were attempts of invasion.

It is shaped like a four-pointed star, a design that serves to orient to the north, south, east and west. Its walls are very wide, about two meters and although Cumana is a very hot city, because of the materials with which it was built, when you enter you feel cool.

The Castle of San Antonio de la Eminencia is one of the most visited places in the city, not only is it a museum and an extraordinary viewpoint, it is also the site of many cultural events.

It was in operation until the beginning of the 19th century and since 1965 it has been a National Historic Monument. I really like the way the details look in black and white.

Don't miss it if you go to eastern Venezuela.

It was interesting to me. that every city builds and has a castle for defense. If they leave me in this castle, I will be taking pictures for days and hours. Of course, apart from the construction, I think the type has an effect on the coolness of the place relative to the climate of the region.

Hahaha that's right, an ideal setting to take hundreds of photos, and you can do it at any time, although at sunset it's fabulous. Thanks for stopping by!
