The Kaleidoscope... Want to watch? / El Caleidoscopio… ¿Quieren mirar?

I don't remember if before I had one I had experienced the visions it produces with any other.

I bought this little toy a few years ago, on a trip I took to Uruguay. I was strolling through the Artisans' Market in Montevideo and among so many interesting and beautiful things I saw, the kaleidoscope won.

At first I didn’t identify what that piece of bamboo with carved drawings on its body was, then the craftsman invited me to take it and told me: it is a kaleidoscope, when I looked through the viewfinder it caught me.

Invented in 1816 by a physicist from Scotland, David Brewster, it became very popular because of the attractiveness of its optical effects. Everyone wanted to have one, and because it was simple to make, many companies manufactured and sold thousands. Today there are even tutorials on the Internet for those who want to create one.

Its name comes from the Greek: kaló (beautiful, good), eidos (image) and skopeo (to observe), and to achieve those psychedelic images that we can see through it, inside it houses three mirrors placed in such a way that they form a triangular prism. The light passes through the colored beads that have been introduced, reaches the end of the kaleidoscope and produces these magical visions, that every time we move the tube, they change shape. This optical instrument is amazing and very relaxing.

It wasn’t easy to take the pictures I show you here of the different designs that form inside the kaleidoscope. I used the camera of my cell phone, lens in 2X mode, which allowed me a good zoom, and I stuck it directly to the viewfinder, which I positioned towards the light. Although perhaps they could look better with another device, I liked the result, the images look dreamy to me, what do you think?

No recuerdo si antes de tener uno había experimentado las visiones que produce con algún otro.

Compré este pequeño juguete hace unos años, en un viaje que hice a Uruguay. Estaba paseando por el Mercado de los Artesanos en Montevideo y entre tantas cosas interesantes y hermosas que vi, el caleidoscopio ganó.

Al principio no identifiqué qué era ese pedazo de bambú con dibujos tallados en su cuerpo, luego el artesano me invitó a que lo tomara y me dijo: es un caleidoscopio, al mirar por el visor me atrapó.

Inventado en 1816 por un físico de Escocia, David Brewster, se volvió muy popular por el atractivo de sus efectos ópticos. Todos querían tener uno, y como era sencillo de hacer, muchas empresas fabricaron y vendieron miles de ejemplares. Hoy en día existen hasta tutoriales en Internet para el que quiera crear uno.

Su nombre viene del griego: kaló (hermoso, bueno), eidos (imagen) y skopeo (observar), y para lograr esas imágenes tan psicodélicas que podemos ver a través de él, en su interior alberga tres espejos puestos de manera que forman un prisma triangular. La luz pasa por las mostacillas o cuentas de colores que se le han introducido, llega al final del caleidoscopio y produce esas mágicas visiones, que cada vez que movemos el tubo, cambian de forma. Este instrumento óptico es sorprendente y muy relajante.

No fue fácil hacer las fotos que les muestro acá de los diferentes diseños que se forman dentro del caleidoscopio. Utilicé la cámara de mi teléfono celular, lente en modo 2X, que me permitía un buen acercamiento, y lo pegué directamente al visor, el cual posicioné hacia la luz. Aunque quizás pueden quedar mejor con otro dispositivo, me gustó el resultado, las imágenes me parecen de ensueño, ¿ustedes qué opinan?
