Watching the 2026 World Cup in Venezuela with and without electricity: An organizational challenge ⚽️ 💡 Viendo el Mundial de Fútbol 2026 en Venezuela con y sin electricidad: un reto organizativo

Something that's happening during this sporting event if you live in Venezuela, but not in the capital, and want to watch the games, is that you have to be prepared in case your electricity goes out. Yes, for about five months now, there have been almost daily power outages in much of the country, and they don't even tell you what time it will happen.

Algo que está pasando durante este evento deportivo si vives en Venezuela, pero no en la capital del país, y quieres ver los partidos, es que tienes que organizarte por si en tu casa quitan la electricidad. Sí, desde hace unos cinco meses, hay racionamiento eléctrico casi a diario en gran parte de las regiones, y ni siquiera te informan a qué hora será.

I've followed soccer and obviously the World Cup since I was a child, so this situation with the electricity had me a bit stressed, because I didn't want to miss the matches.

Sigo el fútbol, y obviamente los mundiales, desde que era una niña, así que esta situación con la electricidad me tenía algo estresada, porque no quería perderme los partidos.

Furthermore, I haven't had cable TV service for a long time, and in Venezuela there is only one free-to-air television channel that acquired the broadcasting rights for the cup, but they can only broadcast 40 of the 104 matches in the tournament, that is, not even half.

Además, desde hace tiempo tampoco tengo un servicio de televisión por cable, y en Venezuela hay sólo un canal de televisión abierta que adquirió los derechos de transmisión de la copa, pero nada más pueden transmitir 40 partidos de los 104 del torneo, o sea, ni siquiera la mitad.

It's important to remember that FIFA became very restrictive with broadcasting rights, they wanted to make too much money. Before, you just turned on the TV and watched the matches. Few services here in Venezuela offer, for example, the DSports signal, which broadcasts all the games, and it's not cheap. That's why, a few days before the World Cup started, I bought a Google TV device so I could watch this channel through streaming services, pirate services, you could say, like Fútbol Libre, Roja Directa, etc... The system forces us to use these alternatives 😆. Football belongs to the people!

Hay que tener en cuenta que la FIFA se volvió muy restrictiva con los derechos de transmisión, se quisieron lucrar demasiado. Antes simplemente prendías la TV y veías los partidos. Pocos servicios aquí en Venezuela ofrecen, por ejemplo, la señal de DSports, que es la que pasa todos los juegos, y no es barato. Por eso, unos días antes de que comenzara el mundial, compré un dispositivo de Google TV, para poder ver este canal a través de señales de streaming, digamos piratas, como Fútbol Libre, Roja Directa, etc... El sistema nos obliga a usar estas alternativas 😆. ¡El fútbol es del pueblo!

But getting back to the issue of the power outages, which can last up to five hours a day, the challenge has been organizing myself to do everyday things while also being able to watch the games. Fortunately, I work freelance and don't have to keep to a strict schedule, but what if there's no electricity at home?

Pero volviendo al tema de la falta de electricidad, que se puede extender hasta por 5 horas diarias, el reto ha sido organizarse para hacer las cosas del día a día y también poder ver los partidos. Afortunadamente trabajo freelance y no tengo que cumplir un horario estricto, pero ¿y si no hay luz en la casa?

Well, a few days before the World Cup started, I found out that a shopping mall near my house was going to show all the matches on several screens scattered throughout the mall. Since they have a generator, power outages aren't a problem, and I'll be able to watch the games. So, when the power goes out in my area, I head over there and sit in the large food court to enjoy soccer on a big screen for free, you don't have to buy anything there.

Bueno, unos días antes del inicio del mundial, me enteré que en un centro comercial que queda cerca de mi casa iban a pasar todos los partidos, y en varias pantallas distribuidas en diferentes áreas del lugar. Como tienen planta eléctrica, no hay problema con los cortes, iba a poder ver los juegos. Entonces, cuando quitan la electricidad por mi zona, salgo para allá y me siento en la amplia feria de comida a disfrutar el fútbol en pantalla grande y gratis, no es obligatorio consumir nada allí.

This shopping center's initiative has been a success, not only for people like me who want to watch the World Cup, but also for the food establishments, which have increased their sales.

La iniciativa de este centro comercial ha sido un éxito, no sólo para gente como yo, que quiere ver el mundial, sino para los establecimientos de comida, que han incrementado sus ventas.

Let's hope this electricity problem in Venezuela is resolved soon, as the authorities have announced. In the meantime, we can't just sit around waiting, we always have to find a way to solve problems and not suffer so much. It's an unusual way to experience a World Cup, isn't it? But it's what many of us here have to deal with. Let's keep going! 😉

Esperemos que pronto sea solucionado este problema de la electricidad en Venezuela, es lo que han anunciado las autoridades. Mientras tanto, no podemos quedarnos sentados a esperar, siempre hay que buscar alguna manera de resolver y no padecer tanto. Es una manera atípica de vivir un mundial de fútbol, ¿no? Pero es lo que nos ha tocado a muchos aquí. ¡Sigamos adelante! 😉
