When they were new | Monomad challenge [ENG-ESP]

The Caracas subway is the most important public transportation system of the Venezuelan capital and when something happens there and it doesn't work as it should, the whole city becomes chaotic. In order to improve several situations that had been occurring, the subway underwent a renovation process that included the arrival of new cars on Line 1, the oldest and the one with the largest number of stations.

This happened in 2011, I was a reporter at a news agency and I went to do an audiovisual work on the new cars that would have, finally, the Caracas subway. For that we moved (the cameraman and I) to the train maintenance yard located in Propatria, west of the city, and from that day are the images that I share in this publication as my entry for the #monomad challenge.

As a daily user of this means of transportation I was happy for the improvement, it was going to benefit everyone. At the same time I was surprised to see the design of these cars, they were very different from the ones we had. I entered one of them together with the cameraman to take some video shots and on my own I took the photos.

During the interviews with specialized subway personnel, we were informed of the advantages of the new trains: more aerodynamic, with 30% wider doors to facilitate the movement of people, greater passenger capacity, video cameras in each car for better supervision and emergency attention.

Another interesting thing is the absence of doors between the seven cars that make up a train. See how deep it looks in the photo above, note also that the floors had a protective plastic. The Spanish company CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) was in charge of designing these new trains.

When the Caracas subway was inaugurated in January 1983 the cars were of French manufacture, some of them are still in operation but not on Line 1, which is the main line.

We continued our work and were taken to witness one of the tests that the new cars had to undergo to start providing service to the public. Hundreds of filled sacks (I guess sand, earth) had been placed inside and the train had to be moved on the rail to determine the maximum weight it could carry.

The train renovation plan for Line 1, which consisted of replacing a total of 48 cars, was successfully carried out at that time. Shortly after doing this report, I premiered the cars together with thousands of other people, and the change was very positive for Caracas.

Currently the subway is again under renovation, since due to the crisis in the country in recent years many areas were inoperative and the service had declined quite a lot. Since last year the State decreed a plan for its integral recovery and little by little the improvement has been seen, hopefully it will be total.
