Companions and companionship

Why we need a companion?

Man was made for company. In the book of Genesis when God created man He said,

It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a companion fit for him" -Genesis 2:18

The importance of a companion is God declared. We call ourselves social animals because we enjoy and thrive in company. Good companions build us and help us grow to our full potential while a bad choice of companions cause us more mental, social and emotional harm than we think possible.

A companion could be a friend, a mate, a partner or anyone who keeps us company. We have heard that dogs or pets make great companions. Basically a companion is someone with whom we could possibly 'share' our life, time and even our deep secrets.

Good Company

The fact remains that we choose our companions in one way or the other. We chose whom we engage with them socially in every situation. Even though it would seem like young people generally go with the flow, they do make some kind of a choice whether they realize it or not.

Personally speaking companionship to me is a very special thing. My companions are those whom I love and make a conscious decision to spend my time with. My choice of a companion is based on so many aspects - common interests, values, personality fit and such. Finding the perfect companion is never easy, a companion who suits you so well in one area may not fit in with your interests in others.

My husband to me is 'my perfect companion', we have known each other for 33 years and been together as husband and wife for 30 years (in a few months)

Those who have never known the deep intimacy and the intense companionship of mutual love have missed the best thing that life has to give. Bertrand Russell

Why is my husband my perfect companion?

We are companions by choice.

We are a team, we work in tandem.

We have common goals which are well defined.

We have common interests and we have have our specific interests which give us the personal space we need even when we are together.

We do not compete but we compliment each other.

We are partners in almost everything we do.

Two heads are better than one is a common saying. This is so true for us as we find decision making much easier.

Sharing of knowledge, skills and understanding is also great as resources brain power is shared.

The pleasure of good company is invaluable. The encouragement, the slight nudges and uplifting experience you get makes life struggles seem much smaller.

More than everything we have an intense emotional bond that keeps us together.

We are not perfect, but yeah we are great companions as good as companions can get.

I see marriage as best form of companionship where responsibilities are shared as much as happiness.

Working relationships of various kind could also be regarded as companionship. It could be short term, goal oriented and
purposeful.

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. - Matthew 24:4

Bad company

About here we need to speak about bad company. I remember a time in school when some of my class mates joined a group of rebellious boys from a nearby school.

The changes we saw in their behavior were astounding.

From being being boys who were protective of their female classmates they became boys who bullied us.

They were disrespectful of our teachers and engaged in smoking and unacceptable behavior.

From being sought after they they were shunned. We saw them being thrown out of school for one offense or the other.

Sadly none of them have made anything of their lives in all these years.

This is what bad companionship can do.

People are always good company when they are doing what they really enjoy. -Samuel Butler

Care in Bring up children

While bringing up my boys I was always vigilant about the company they kept. From a slight change in behavior like a cuss word I knew that the influence came from a wrong source. Soon enough I would discover a certain individual that caused the problem. I was not keen on interfering with my children's friends, but I ensured that one rotten apple didn't spoil the whole basket. I always changed things around subtly making sure that my boys didn't get rebellious or the other child feel bad.

If we don't care enough about the company our children keep, the company will care enough to make rebels out of our children. This was my understanding then and I stand by it now.

Ways to keep good company

Keep good company, read good books, love good things and cultivate soul and body as faithfully as you can - Louisa May Alcott <

Good companions come in many forms - books, art, writing, craft, gardening and such. I spend so much of much time writing or crafting or gardening and I can say for sure that my time has been well spent in the company of the wise.

There is so much you learn about life when you focus on those things.

The journey of life is much easier and more pleasurable with a companion be it human or any of the above mentioned. I can vouch for that from my personal experience.

The company I have kept has clearly defined me as a person. Life is all about personal choices and this is no exception.

This is my submission for the pob word of the week challenge.

Amazing one here sofs, I enjoyed the read and I learnt from you once more.

Companionship is something that humans can't live without, we spend most of time relating with people or someone, that's companionship.

The husband and the wife are the best in showing what companionship is about and I smiled when you talked about you and your husband, 33 years? That's a really long one to me 😊

All the best with contest sofs, love you!

Outstanding and captivating write up. I was so carried away while reading this and thought for a moment..... We are the company we keep. We get influenced by the company that surrounds us. Thanks so much for this post. After reading this it seems so evident that you are a Christian and you really do believe in the bible. If I am right then please answer this. What made you a Christian? And why do you strongly believe in the bible so much?

LOL your question is not really pertaining to the content but here is your answer.
I am a Christian by choice.. I came to it after I read various scriptures from other religions. I brought a few others into this faith.
I not only believe the Bible by I try to live by it in every way.
I am not religious, (religion is man made) I follow God through his Word

First I must say #CoupleGoals - to be so in tune to each other :D

How you nudged your kids in a direction that both parties... make that all three parties are at ease... that's really something.

As always loved this read <33

That is true being able to be in tune (fine tuned) to each other is the most important thing.
Working with the kids was more tricky, you could possibly do a bit too much and antagonize them and it could work against us.
Thanks for stopping by to read and respond @kaerpediem

Yes, the kids - especially in their teens
And every single one is different
What works with one does not necessarily work with the other :D

To be sincere, the best companion you will have is your husband or your wife. He or she will be the one to take good care of you and the children and take make sure that the home is lacking anything.

So, vice versa, make the best companion in which ever way.

While I may agree with you that the best companion could often be your spouse, I may differ with you on your expectations from your companion.
To expect a companion to look after you or your children is not fair. while I am all for doing this together because you are a family, a team.
A companion is one you completes you and brings out the best in you and you do likewise.
You work together as a team.
That is how I see this relationship.

I will say it's just a little difference between a companion and companionship.

But in real seen sense, what you share or do with a companionship will be differ from that of a companion because the intimacy is different.

A companion that does not yield a good fruit should be cut off, there's no need of keeping it.

You and your husband can best be described as a perfect companionship, good 30 year!!! That's a long time, and you're both living happily. That's amazing ma'am @sofs-su

Bad company corrupt good manner

Just like those boys you used as an example when you are in school , they were infected with bad behavior which end up to ruin their life.

Just like good companion is good in relationship, we should also bring up a child a good way.

We should also monitor the kind of Friends they mingle with so that they will not end up moving with the wrong crowd that will lead them to condemnation.

Was directed to your post via @dreemport and I'm glad to come across a wonderful post like this.
Keep on hiving !
