Somewhere in Japan, hidden among the camphor trees, there is a creature only visible to eyes that believe in magic and are somehow immersed in it. He has no known name, but Mei calls him Totoro. He looks like a round cat, with a small mouth when sleeping but big when smiling or blowing big drafts. He also loves the sound of raindrops crashing against an umbrella; he only goes out at night, and wanders around in his living bus that also looks like a cat. So many references arise from a neat and renewing animation, essential in its way of telling a story with so little but at the same time with a lot.

Original from the Ghibli studios and from the master hand of Hayao Miyazaki, “Tonari no Totoro” is a forceful example of the richness of Japanese animated cinema, which, of course, has nothing to envy from the western one.

I had not seen this film, in fact, of Miyazaki's creations I only knew the one corresponding to Chichiro; Of course, in my walk through the history of Totoro I found some symbolic references, for example, in the living fluff of soot, the face of one or another character and the mystical and spiritual setting. It seems that Miyazaki forges his fantasy through prominent elements of nature: leafy green spaces, peasant laughter, cultures rich in peace, functional norms, and ancestral traditions. Including this in a feature film and at the same time directing it towards magic and everyday life seems fascinating to me, even more than the recurring productions in which the typical adventure and conflicting characters emerge from American production companies.

This is what has distanced me from the original Disney animation, since it seems that the ideas do not escape beyond the typical premise of the linear adventure, the protagonist to whom something happens in the first minutes of the film and the consequent emotional journey to remedy the conflict. You can't expect something new other than Pixar's emphasis, even if it seems that this one is also outdated. And yet, I cannot say that everything is bad, but it is worth looking elsewhere from time to time. Totoro, in this sense, is a work that enchants with its simple plot: two girls who move to a rural neighborhood and who, while waiting for their sick mother to recover, will have to meet a creature that lives in the tree. giant in your garden

Everything is coexistence and adaptation, without more. Satsuki and Mei are the girls I'm talking about: curious and lovers of haunted houses, the two little girls will find in Totoro what they lack in solitude and uncertainty. Hence, the creature accompanies them at certain moments in history, perhaps fond of their ability to believe in the fantastic. He's like a channeler: maybe like those stuffed animals you need to hug to sleep.

I found in Totoro an inexplicable beauty; something that pushes you to smile at the naturalness in which the plot develops. The insertion of fantasy lies in the eyes of innocence: the leading girls cover the work from beginning to end, without gaps or fillers. Two sisters who just wanted to play and see their mother safe and at home, and also wait for her father at the tree-covered bus stop. This is how events occur in isolation, without a unique context that defines the need to travel the world to find answers. Totoro, then, is nothing more than a character with referential mechanics; Her appearances are rare up to a certain point, and then, there is that beautiful combination between the sisters' uncertainty and the appearance of a hope saturated in magic.

After seeing the movie I kept thinking for a long time; Like those girls, I also grew up in a small town surrounded by vegetation and rural roads. I managed to connect a lot with my own childhood, with the wild imagination and the days when it rained and rained for weeks on end. Very beautiful images accompany Miyazaki's work, after all, he is a genius at creating amazing contours with such everyday and simple things.

Another of the great features of this particular animation is its soundtrack: especially in the sounds of nature. I noticed that Totoro has a certain taste for these, and even tries to characterize them with some gestures, such as shivering; He was very funny when I saw him smile, I mean, the outline of his teeth reminded me of the cat that smiled in Alice and Wonderland, coincidences? Could be. The umbrella scene was definitely my favorite. As I said before, this creature of the woods appeared very little, but in contrast there was a kind of symbolism. Of course, it was impossible not to laugh with some of the occurrences with which Totoro appeared in front of the girls.

These soft fantasy stories are the ones that end up winning my heart, since there is no obligation to explain the magical phenomenon but rather to live with it. Of course I was left with some doubts regarding some elements and motivations, but for the most part I was able to enjoy Satsuki, Mei and their neighbor Totoro. The message of brotherhood and family love was what fascinated me from the first sequence of the feature film; laughter and games, and that incredible connection between the sisters… humanity: that is what makes this work of Miyazaki so special. Therein lies the real magic!

Saludos Soldier

Yo solo he visto Chichiro y ahora esta. Tal vez siga viendo otras obras de Miyazaki jejeje.

Saludos cordiales señor JC 💯.
