That memorable March [ENG-ESP]

I was going through my photo gallery and I came across a particular event: the fifteenth birthday of one of my many cousins. That birthday was quite symbolic, this because our whole family participated in the organization of the party. I must admit that I am not a big fan of crowded gatherings. Especially when they are attended by people most of whom I don't know. This birthday was the exception because it was more of a family affair, and well, at least I could talk to someone close to me and enjoy a drink while we talked about how much life changes over the years.

At a family birthday gathering, it never hurts to reminisce with allegories of fun childhood pranks. That night, I had a lot of fun while joking with my cousins and the birthday girl; to the latter, I made many jokes about her height, since she is small and, well, I am almost a giant. As we danced the Waltz, I said to her:

"You stayed dwarf..." She just burst out laughing.

Estaba revisando mi galería de fotografías y me encontré con un evento en particular: los quince años de una de mis tantas primas. Aquel cumpleaños fue bastante simbólico, esto porque toda nuestra familia participó en la organización de la fiesta. Debo admitir que no soy muy fan de las reuniones concurridas. Sobre todo cuando asisten personas que en su mayoría no conozco. Este cumpleaños fue la excepción porque fue más familiar, y bueno, al menos podía hablar con alguien cercano y disfrutar de un trago mientras tocábamos temas relacionados a lo que tanto cambia la vida con el pasar de los años.

En una reunión familiar de cumpleaños, nunca está de más recordar con alegorías las divertidas travesuras infantiles. Aquella noche, me divertí muchísimo mientras bromeaba con mis primos y la cumpleañera; a esta última, le hice muchas bromas sobre su estatura, ya que es pequeña y, pues, yo soy casi un gigante. Mientras bailábamos el Vals, le dije:

"Te quedaste enana..." Ella solo se echó a reír.

But, more than just a family birthday, I remember that March had been a fantastic month at the time. It was 2022 and even though organizing the celebration party for the quinceañera was quite difficult, we managed to celebrate it elegantly: in short, we wanted something that she would love, since her good grades and her effort in high school made her worthy of the best in the world. The importance of teamwork was proven for the occasion. Now that a lot of time has passed, it seems incredible to me that we made it.

With so many points of view, criteria and opinions, organizing a birthday party is quite difficult. In that case, I was quite wealthy and only limited myself to collaborate with what I was told, since I know nothing about organizing birthdays. My cousins and aunts took the helm and, agreeing for the common good, decided to put the birthday girl's tastes above their own. It was quite funny the way they managed to put aside creative rivalries, because yes, a party organized by a whole family always has its discrepancies in terms of protocol.

Pero, más que un simple cumpleaños familiar, recuerdo que para aquel entonces marzo había sido un mes fantástico. Era 2022 y a pesar de que organizar la fiesta de celebración para la quinceañera fue bastante difícil, logramos festejarla de manera elegante: en definitiva, queríamos algo que a ella le encantara, pues sus buenas calificaciones y su esfuerzo en la preparatoria la convertían en merecedora de lo mejor del mundo. La importancia de trabajar en equipo fue comprobada para dicha ocasión. Ahora que ha pasado bastante tiempo, me parece increíble que lo hayamos logrado.

Y es que con tantos puntos de vista, criterios y opiniones, organizar una fiesta de cumpleaños es bastante difícil. En ese caso, yo fui bastante pudiente y solo me limité a colaborar con lo que se me dijera, pues no se nada de organizar cumpleaños. Mis primas y tías tomaron el timón y, pactando por el bien común, decidieron poner por encima de sus gustos los gustos de la cumpleañera. Fue bastante graciosa la manera en la que lograron dejar a un lado las rivalidades creativas, porque sí, una fiesta organizada por toda una familia siempre tiene sus discrepancias en términos protocolares.

The miracle of creative unification opened the door to a splendid family celebration. Look, I'm not a man who gets excited about a birthday party, but for that March 2022, I was overcome by the festive spirit. The celebration was held on the 15th of that month, according to my aunts, to coincide with the birthday girl's birthday. Of course, the balloons, karaoke and waltz were joined by delicious appetizers. What I ate the most that night was cheese sticks, or tequeños, as we say in Venezuela. As for the drinks, champagne prevailed? even long before the toast.

As is customary and traditional at Quinceañera parties, the much-desired "Crazy Time" was not to be missed. This is a segment in which outlandish and crazy musical mixes are played, and in which the play of lights and masks, whistles, and dances are inevitable. That's the only way I dance: with the lights off so no one can see my left foot, hahahaha.

El milagro de la unificación creativa abrió las puertas a una celebración familiar espléndida. Miren, no soy yo un hombre que se entusiasma por una fiesta de cumpleaños, pero para aquel marzo del 2022 me dominó el espíritu festivo. La celebración se realizó el 15 de dicho mes, según mis tías, para que concordara con el número de años que festejaba la cumpleañera. Por supuesto, a los globos, el karaoke y el vals se unieron los deliciosos aperitivos. Lo que más comí aquella noche fue palitos de queso, o tequeños, como le decimos en Venezuela. Con respecto a la bebida, prevaleció el champán... incluso mucho antes del brindis.

Como es costumbre y tradición en las fiestas de quince años, no pudo faltar la tan deseada hora loca. Este es un segmento en el que se colocan mezclas musicales estrambóticas y alocadas, y en el que es inevitable el juego de luces y las máscaras, los silbatos, y los bailes. Es la única manera de que yo baile: con las luces apagadas para que nadie vea mis pies izquierdos, jajajaja.

I wish I could go back in time and enjoy that fantastic celebration again. Nevertheless, I treasure the memories in my heart and photo gallery, which sometimes revive, like the worthy and memorable TBTs that remind us why life is so wonderful.

Ojalá pudiera yo regresar el tiempo y disfrutar otra vez de aquella fantástica celebración. No obstante, atesoro los recuerdos en mi corazón y galería fotográfica, que reviven cada cierto tiempo, como los dignos y memorables TBT que nos recuerdan por qué la vida es tan maravillosa.
