I worked on a farm for a morning
I got an opportunity to check out a farm and to do some work on it. I started off by giving them all my leaves that have been dropping this fall. They asked for them so glad I was able to bag mine up and give them to the farm.
The leaves went around some tender greens to keep them from getting frosted so bad when winter comes around.
I collected over twelve bags of leaves from my property and brought them over to the farm. They were really happy to have them.
There were lines of rows of vegetables growing. I carefully pulled up weeds around them and then laid down the leaves around them.
I eventually worked down the line and made my way to the middle. And then filled in any spaces I found. I had to dodge ant hills as I put down the leaves.
Took about an hour but I got it all laid down along the rows. I had the area to myself and enjoyed doing it.
There were two chickens on the farm. One was real old and tired. And the other seemed to keep its distance from me. Guess it didn't know me well.
The younger one had a little hole dug so it could rest in. It was cool to see chickens roaming around.
I finished off the last bag of leaves and got rid of the bags. From there I found some Blueberry bushes in need of some care. The grass around them has overgrown them and seems like it may be stunting their growth.
There were about five blueberry bushes and half of them had ant hills growing around them I cleared the ones without ants and then treated the ones with DE with the ants.
As I was cleaning up around the base of the Blueberries I found its tag. Looks like it's a Desoto blueberry bush. A rabbit eye high bush variety.
I helped to clean up a thornless blackberry vine as well. I trained it's new growth into the wire structure that it was growing on.
Many of the vines were growing into the ground forming new roots. I cut those off and kept them. The person working there said I could have them if I cleaned up the bush.
String was used to help them grow towards the support wires.
All and all I got about six cuttings. I place them around my other blackberry plants and hope they cross pollenate.
There were some beehives on site so the area was filled with happy bees feeding on flowers.
There was a collection of rocks at the farm from others that have visited it. I may paint a Hive logo on a rock and leave it there :)
Looking forward to returning, they said I can join them next time they do some beehive work. Would be nice to get some hands on work before I get mine next year.
I don't really know, what's the benefit of spreading the leaves you gathered so far? Like how does it help that farm? Is it some kind of warmth for just earth crops and the chickens?
It helps to keep the moisture in the soil when we get droughts. And the leaves break down and become a mild fertilizer for the crops. Also the leaves can protect the tender greens from cold winds.
Ohhhh now I understand it, multiple functions from the leaves, planting and farming can be awesome
You were a busy bee that day and it looks like you enjoyed it a lot!
Haha yeah I spent a few hours out there and sure kept busy. Just being out on the farm felt refreshing so it was worth it.
Having a farm is great, but it has a lot of work to do!
You did a good job!
Haha yeah so true, glad I could just visit one and not have to worry about running it daily.
Thanks much
