Teatro de la ópera de Maracay (TOM), known by its initials as the TOM, was inaugurated on March 19, 1973 by the President of the Republic of Venezuela, Rafael Caldera, but the idea of the work was born in 1934, by Gen. Juan Vicente Gómez as part of the urban project to beautify and conceive a landscaped city that would give Maracay the title of Garden City, with monumental works and spaces, among which would be the TOM, whose design fell to the architect Luis Malaussena, who along with Carlos Guinand was inspired by the Opera House of Charles Garnier, in Paris, France.

The construction of the theater was carried out adjacent to the also emblematic Bolivar Square in Maracay, together with other works such as the Garden Hotel and the Maracay Clinic, which made up the group of architectural works that gave shape to the new urbanistic idea of the leader Juan Vicente Gomez. The construction began in 1935 and the inauguration was planned for the following year 1936, but after the death of Juan Vicente Gómez on December 17, 1935, the work was left unfinished. In the fifties, General Marcos Pérez Jiménez ordered the completion of the roofing in several areas, but the work was still not given the value it deserved.

In 1970, the work was taken up again by architect Luis Manuel Trompiz under the mandate of President Rafael Caldera and finally the construction of the Maracay Opera Theater was completed. It opened its doors to the public on March 19, 1973.

After 38 years of waiting, it came to function as a warehouse, until the Teatro de la Opera de Maracay opened its doors in 1973, thanks to the government of Rafael Caldera. The theater, cultural patrimony of the nation, was decreed as a National Historical Monument on April 15, 1994 by decision of Rafael Caldera, according to Gazette number 35.441.

Its emblematic facade under the introduction of more formal eclectic features for the time in which the work was conceived, is still majestic today and continues to maintain its best angles.

The TOM was closed for remodeling from 2009 to 2015, a long period due to the regrettable corruption of the rulers of the revolution. But after reopening, finally the Maracayeros could enjoy again the events presented in its interior with the rehabilitation and creation of new spaces in the work devised in the past, the architect Luis Malaussena.

The details of the original work were maintained and others improved with the modernization of the roofs, an increase in the capacity for eighteen hundred people, adjustment of new technologies, improvements in lighting.

The Maracay Opera House is an example of many works in the world that represent urban architecture as part of good urban planning projects that improve, contribute to and beautify cities.

From Maracay, Venezuela, I send a message of urban responsibility that brings together the necessary areas for the common good.

Greetings @sorprendente, watching something live in a theater is one of the things that I am always intrigued by. By I still can't find the right time or the right play to watch. Is there an international play or musical that you can recommend?

Hi @afterglow, it certainly is very exciting to attend and enjoy events in a large theater hall. But I tell you that for now I do not recommend attendance at indoor venues where there may be accumulation of people. For this we will have to wait for real control of the virus that does not stop mutating. For now let's live the new virtual life. Blessings to you.

I see, thank you (^_^) and you are correct, it is not recommended to attend indoor venues while this pandemic is not over yet. Greetings from the Philippines!

I had not seen the inside of it. It is a great work and has some history, although it was not finished until recently. Undoubtedly one of the most important architectural works of Maracay. Greetings, thanks for sharing it.

Hello @sorprendente. Remarkable works of architecture like the Teatro de la ópera de Maracay (TOM) even become more spectacular because of your cherished memories embedded within the landmark. And it was merely not an ordinary event, but a life-changing experience because you had so much fun with no other than the King of Pop himself: Michael Jackson. That alone is enough to seal your emotional connection to that outstanding building for years to come.

Thank you for joining the OCD Community Boost Contest for Architecture+Design. Awesome post!
