High level street art | Improvised photo session to Samuel Quinatoa

It was a night of work for me and for an artist that I see doing a work of art on the sidewalk of a busy street in Medellin. I stopped even though I was in a hurry, but it was impossible to just pass by and not stop to see what he was drawing and I took out my iPhone for a picture. A picture? No gentlemen, I stayed there for a few minutes that were brief but enough to immortalize in my blog this street artist named Samuel Quinatoa.

Now I write his name very easily but it was not easy to ask him that information in October of last year which was when I met him and until now I share my experience and the pictures. Samuel was concentrated and you can see that he is not very talkative like me, but I dared and first I asked him where he was from and he told me: Ecuador. Then I asked him his name and he said proudly: Samuel Quinatoa, descendant of Atahualpa.

Era una noche de trabajo para mí y para un artista que veo haciendo una obra de arte en la acera de una transitada calle de Medellín. Me detengo aunque yo estaba apurado, pero es que era imposible solo pasar y no detenerse a ver lo que estaba dibujando y saco el iPhone para una foto. ¿Una foto? No señores, allí me quedé unos minutos que fueron breves pero suficientes para inmortalizar en mi blog a este artista callejero llamado Samuel Quinatoa.

Ahorita escribo muy fácil su nombre pero no fue sencillo preguntarle esa información en octubre del año pasado que fue cuando lo conocí y hasta ahora comparto mi experiencia y las fotografías. Samuel estaba concentrado y se ve que es de poco hablar como yo, pero me atreví y primero le pregunte de donde era y me dijo: Ecuador. Luego le pregunté su nombre y dice con orgullo: Samuel Quinatoa, descendiente de Atahualpa.

But that was not all, he asked me if I knew who was the woman in his art and I, ignorant of reggaeton, did not recognize Karol G. Here they are fans of reggaeton, Medellin is the capital of reggaeton but I do not say more about this, excuse his followers and all the reggaetoneros.

What was impressive was the quality and skill of the artist that even though I arrived and the work was practically finished, I was amazed to see all the details with such perfection using only colored chalk and charcoal for the black tones. It seems that the work is ready but Samuel did not stop, he was constantly moving around retouching details on Karol G.'s face.

Pero eso no fue todo, el me pregunta a mí si sabía quien era la mujer de su arte y yo ignorante del reguetón no reconocí a Karol G. Aquí son fanáticos del reguetón, Medellín es la capital del reguetón pero no digo más sobre esto, disculpen sus seguidores y todos los reguetoneros.

Sigo con lo importante, lo que si era impresionante es la calidad y habilidad del artista que aunque yo llegué y la obra estaba prácticamente terminada, me dejó muy asombrado ver todos los detalles con tanta perfección usando solamente tizas de colores y carbón para los tonos negros. Parece que la obra esta lista pero Samuel no paraba, se movía constantemente retocando detalles en el rostro de karol G.

I was in a hurry to see the end of the work and many people passing by also stopped, there were those who were not careful and stepped on Samuel's work, as well as the owner of the shoe you see in the photo.

Yo apurado para ver el final de la obra y mucha gente que pasaba se detenia también, había quienes no tenía cuidado y pisaban la obra de Samuel, así como el dueño del zapato que ven en la foto.

Samuel Quinatoa was just very focused and what happens or doesn't happen around him is of little interest to him, that's how we artists are when we are working with passion. I needed to keep going because I had commitments as @amjdancer and I was still there taking pictures even though it was difficult for him to pose without moving.

Samuel Quinatoa solo estaba muy concentrado y lo que pasa o deja de pasar a su alrededor poco le interesa, así somos los artistas cuando estamos trabajando con pasión. Yo necesitaba seguir porque tenía compromisos como @amjdancer y allí seguía yo tomando fotos aunque fue difícil que posara sin moverse.

When I thought he had finished his work, he got up and walked around but it was inspecting Karol G's face.

Cuando creí que había terminado su trabajo, se levantó y caminaba al rededor pero era inspeccionando el rostro de Karol G.

He bends down again and begins to fill in other details in his artwork with charcoal. He doesn't stop, this is a great work, it seems infinite, this artist has an amazing dedication.

Se vuelve a inclinar y empieza a rellenar con carbón otros detalles en su obra de arte. No para, esto es un gran trabajo, parece infinito, tiene una dedicación asombrosa este artista.

Sombrero: "Thank you for your support"

An essential piece for street artists, a humble hat to receive the collaborations that support the artist. This man should be somewhere else and not working in the streets, but he is a nomad who arrived from Ecuador and wherever he goes, he leaves his passing art in the materials he uses, but at the moment he makes an impacting impression and there is another great artist who only places a hat to collaborate with some bills and coins.

Sombrero: "Gracias por su apoyo"

Una pieza infaltable para los artistas callejeros, un humilde sombrero para recibir las colaboraciones que apoyan al artista. Este hombre debería estar en otro lugar y no trabajando en las calles, pero es un nómada que llegó de Ecuador y por donde pasa deja plasmado su arte pasajero por los materiales que usa pero que al momento de hacerlo causa una impactante impresión y allí está otro gran artista que solo coloca un sombrero para que le colaboren con algunos billetes y monedas.

While there are other works exhibited by the artist, they are portraits where the mastery of black and white techniques is also evident.

Mientras trabajo hay otras obras exhibidas del artista, son retratos donde se nota también el dominio de técnicas en blanco y negro.

Samuel Quinatoa's art left me impressed but I had to be on my way before he finished Karol G, because I also needed to work but what I had seen was enough. It was worth the few minutes I was there for a few pictures of what for me is a high level street artist and I share them to the friends of @visualshots, in their cool community for photography lovers.

El arte de Samuel Quinatoa me dejo impresionado pero tuve que seguir mi camino antes que terminara a Karol G, porque yo también necesitaba trabajar pero lo que había visto era suficiente. Valió la pena los pocos minutos que estuve allí para unas fotografías de lo que para mí es un artista de calle de alto nivel y las comparto a los amigos de @visualshots, en su genial comunidad para los amantes de la fotografía.
