Professor Shisho and the giant water bug

IMG_20221105_161119.jpg

I was in the garden, returning from a walk with our cats, when I noticed something disturbing. I saw it out of the corner of my eye as I passed one of the evergreen bushes.

IMG_20221105_161212.jpg

I saw "something" and almost passed it. Wondering if I should stop in front of it or not. Because it was completely unknown.

IMG_20221105_201346.jpg

And one more thing - I didn't know whether to stop in front of it or not, because I didn't know what it was and how dangerous it was.

IMG_20221105_201414.jpg

Will it jump on me, will it fly, will it bite me, is it poisonous?
But first was the unknown.

IMG_20221105_201440.jpg

Within seconds, my brain began rummaging through the catalog of familiar images and the first thing that came to mind was: a turtle.

IMG_20221105_201501.jpg

Oh, don't make fun of me now. I know what a turtle looks like. But the point is that there are turtles in our garden, but this is the first time I see this strange animal. I mean, my brain only knows the turtle, not this. And we're looking for familiar images, aren't we?

IMG_20221105_201527.jpg

In the next split second, I noticed the menacing looking pair of front fore limbs and the second image that popped into my head was: cancer.
No, don't laugh at me again. We don't live near a body of water and there is no way this could be cancer.

IMG_20221105_201549.jpg
(See how content our cat Shisho is. I'll explain why in a moment.)

And here came the third image - a scorpion.

IMG_20221105_201611.jpg

You see how the brain works, or rather, does not work in such situations. 😁How easily it is confused and manipulated. Even by a bug, if that beast here can be called a bug.

IMG_20221105_201635.jpg

In fact, I only stopped in front of it for a split second. There were no cats around me at that moment. But I didn't carry the phone with me at the same time.

IMG_20221105_201658.jpg

It's impossible not to photograph this animal, I thought as I ran to the door of the house, opened the front door, shouted to my boyfriend that something very strange was in our garden and that I was going to get my phone because I had to photograph it.

IMG_20221105_201719.jpg

By the time I went to the room at the other end of the house to get the phone, my boyfriend had already gone outside after my warnings to be careful.

IMG_20221105_201740.jpg

But outside was already our freakiest cat, Shisho, who is definitely not careful with anything. 😅

IMG_20221105_201801.jpg

Shishi is a monster who is not afraid of anything. Of course, is there a cat that is afraid of anything? Especially of something as interesting and unfamiliar as this bug.

IMG_20221105_201821.jpg

I was afraid of it. Definitely. I was afraid even for Shisho when I saw what he was doing to it.
There was a fight. Between him and the bug. He caught it and threw it into the bushes, the bug tried to escape. At the same time, it tried to attack the cat. Several times.

IMG_20221105_201841.jpg

Shisho, however, did not allow himself to be intimidated. He was aiming for the head of the creature. This is what I saw in those brief seconds as I watched them and at the same time tried to take pictures of what was happening.

IMG_20221105_201908.jpg

By following the progression of events on the timeline of the photos I'm showing you, you can now tell what happened next.

IMG_20221105_201929.jpg

As scared as I was, Shisho wasn't. He seemed to know what he was doing. It's as if he meets these animals in the garden every day. And I assure you - this is not the case.

IMG_20221105_201952.jpg

And it was as if Shisho had read the Encyclopaedia Britannica or all possible encyclopedias at once,

IMG_20221105_202014.jpg

as if he had gone to the library to educate himself on the following questions: "what does one do when meeting such and such an insect?", "how does it react and what this and that animal do under threat?", "what is the weak point in attacking this and that insect?"

IMG_20221105_202047.jpg

and above all: "which animal is edible and does it make sense to kill it to eat it?"

IMG_20221105_202109.jpg

(oh, there's always a sense to kill something, Shisho would say 😄)

IMG_20221105_202133.jpg

At first I was angry that Shisho wouldn't even let me take a picture of this creature. Everything happened so quickly and by the time I got back with my phone he was already on it.

IMG_20221105_202158.jpg

Then I felt sorry for the killed animal, even though I had no idea what it was.

IMG_20221105_202236.jpg

But after it was all over and my boyfriend and I went back to the house amazed at what had happened, he found the name of this animal on the Internet and the description of its species.

IMG_20221105_202323.jpg

It is called 'giant water bug' and it really was giant.
This can be seen even in its photos together with the cat - Shisho is a big cat.

IMG_20221105_202346.jpg

IMG_20221105_202418.jpg

It had rained quite a bit the day before and I figured it had ended up in our garden with the rain - you know the kind of rain that brings frogs or fish with it.

IMG_20221105_202442.jpg

I had no other explanation for how it got here.

IMG_20221105_202502.jpg

Besides, it was just one.

IMG_20221105_202526.jpg

And believe me, this insect is not typical for Bulgaria. I know this because I am seeing it for the first time in my life. And on the Internet it is written that it is eaten in some parts of Asia (Shisho knew that for sure, from the encyclopedias he reads every day 😹). As well as that it is distributed in continents such as North America and Africa.

IMG_20221105_202545.jpg

Besides, this creature bites.

IMG_20221105_202612.jpg

Here I am no longer sure that Professor Shisho was aware of this.

IMG_20221105_202648.jpg

Still, he managed to avoid being bitten, aiming for the head from the start.

IMG_20221105_202727.jpg

After reading on the Internet, as much as I felt sorry for the animal, I realized that there was no way we could let this unknown monster roam our garden. It could have been a threat to our cats. Even to the turtles. Because we read it feeds on baby turtles.

IMG_20221105_202818.jpg

IMG_20221105_202848.jpg

Professor Shisho may have read the information about the turtles and decided to protect them.

IMG_20221105_202912.jpg

IMG_20221105_202936.jpg

He also probably knew that he was big and strong enough and would handle this animal, he just had to not let himself be bitten.

IMG_20221105_203000.jpg

IMG_20221105_203028.jpg

In a sense, he even saved us from having to think about what we humans should do with this animal. He took away the responsibility, so to speak.

IMG_20221105_203052.jpg

IMG_20221105_203117.jpg

He took responsibility for everything. And saved us.

IMG_20221105_203142.jpg

IMG_20221105_203209.jpg

Shisho, our craziest cat, the greatest freak, as I have called him before, saved us.

IMG_20221105_203230.jpg

IMG_20221105_203250.jpg

Fast and clean. Without any detours and delays. As a professional assassin.

IMG_20221105_203313.jpg

IMG_20221105_203334.jpg

I have to tell you that my attitude towards this kitty changed from that day on. You know that I have often complained of him before - he is a great Annoyer! 😹

IMG_20221105_203357.jpg

But now he suddenly became very nice to me and I saw beyond all his behavior so far - he is a very nice kitten. 😻

IMG_20221105_203731.jpg

IMG_20221105_203805.jpg

A nice killer, so to speak, ha ha 😄

IMG_20221105_203951.jpg

In the end, there were just some wings left (yes, this animal flies, apart from everything else) 🙀

IMG_20221105_204028.jpg

IMG_20221105_204058.jpg

Wings that I didn't even dare to hold in my hand because I was afraid that somehow they would suddenly come alive and bite me.

IMG_20221105_204142.jpg

IMG_20221105_204204.jpg

So when Shisho, tired and content, lay at my feet on the lawn, I arranged them on top of his fur to photograph them.

IMG_20221105_204237.jpg

IMG_20221105_204302.jpg

P.S. You know I'm a nature lover and I hope you view this post solely from that perspective.

Happy #Caturday to all cat lovers!

Wowwwww!
It seems that really the cats have some internal embedded wiki of their own and they know what to do.
Also, probably a tasty snack and a protective act for his Hooooomans :D

In fact, I have no way of knowing what was going through his head in those brief minutes then.
You know that saying "curiosity kills the cat". I know of examples of its literal meaning - when cats start playing with a snake, for example, but it turns out to be poisonous and bites them because they are not careful. So I'm not sure cats really always know what they're doing when they're doing something. But in this particular case, Shisho seemed to really know it. 😻

You know that saying "curiosity kills the cat".

I suppose that saying exists for a reason :D

Probably not its first encounter with this extraterrestrial being? ;)

I never let my cats eat them because I’m so scared from bugs 😂

There was no way I could stop him. Precisely because I was so afraid of this bug. 😄

I don't think it could have done much damage to the cats, but your turtles might have been on the menu. Shisho is definitely tough, I can tell he's been in some fights! The tip of his ear is missing!

Yes, Shisho is a fighter. From a human perspective, probably a little brainless. Because I'm sure he acts first (instinctively) and then thinks, if at all. 😹 As may have happened in this case.
I saw pictures of this insect bite damage on a human body and read that people should be careful not to get bitten because it was very painful. So I assumed it was dangerous for a cat too.
Thanks for the curation!

Oh, it might be dangerous then for cats, but so are many creatures that they kill, such as rats.

I'm glad your cat is a good enough fighter that he wasn't harmed :)

Shisho is one tough and courageous cat! 😃😃 Hi there, @soulsdetour. I'm always scared of bugs and will never go near any. If I see one, I scream and call hubs to come and kill it. 🤣

This is the first time I'm seeing a giant water bug and Shisho tore the poor thing shreds. Oh no. I think it was attracted to your garden because of the plants. Wherever there are green plants, there will be bugs. Nice pictures. Thanks for sharing. 😊😊

Yes, in fact, under those bushes I'm talking about, there live incredible monsters that our cats drag out into the light of day from time to time, just to terrify me. 😂 But this predator here, lives basically in water pools. Therefore, its presence in our garden continues to be absolutely inexplicable to me.
I also have a fear of bugs, I try to keep my composure in most cases, but with some types of animals I just can't. 😀 So I felt somehow protected by our crazy fighter that day.

At first I thought it was a new toy for the guardians, but found that he devoured it😅

Yes, these are toys for them. They're just alive. Some are not even fit to eat, only to be killed.
Cats can be terrible creatures sometimes, and yet we can't stop loving them.

Yes, in my house there is also a cat giving birth, I don't know who threw it here, now my house is like a cat daycare😅

Lucky you! Probably the cat chose you because you are a good person and she knows you will take a good care of her and the babies. You know - the Cat God is always watching from above and records the deeds of humans - "this human took care of this dear child of mine", "this one did not" 🌩️🐱😀
