Learning to Play the Guitar Like a Star Weeps

Venezuelan Waltz

I just got home from my guitar lesson with Professor Carlos. It’s a two-hour class from 2 to 4 p.m. that I never miss—not even when I’m sick—because the content and his teaching methods are wonderful; I love his classes.

This week I’ve been feeling under the weather with a stuffy nose and rhinitis, but I’m starting to think it might be a virus because, in addition to the sneezing and runny nose, I have a headache, chest and back pain, and a dry cough—so it’s likely a virus. That’s why I missed yesterday’s recorder and music theory class. Today, even though I was feeling run-down, I went to guitar class because the teacher never repeats a lesson, and the information he provides is always valuable.

Among the topics he covered today were arpeggio exercises and strumming patterns in waltz time; he gave us the chord chart for the song “Como Llora una Estrella” and assigned it as homework for next week. We practiced the first part several times, since there are three parts in total.

I didn’t realize how old this song is or that several versions of it had been released. Many artists have sung it, including the famous Venezuelan singer Ilan Chester. It was composed in 1915 by the musician Antonio Carrillo and was originally just an instrumental serenade; he was inspired by his feelings for a woman who later became his wife. Years later, other musicians and songwriters added lyrics to the piece.

It’s a beautiful song, both to play and to sing; I hope to master it this week. Besides me, two classmates also showed up late, but this time I wasn’t the only one.

I’ve noticed that many of the young people in the program are missing their classes; the teachers and the program director are concerned about the low enrollment. It seems that the problems with electricity rationing and the high cost of living are affecting us all to such an extent that daily leisure activities are taking a back seat.

In my case, my health might be suffering, even though I don’t want it to: poor sleep, poor eating habits, and constant worry have me feeling overwhelmed—so much so that this post was supposed to be cheerful and beautiful but ended up being a cathartic release. 🥲😔.

Well, friends, without further ado, I want to reach this goal and learn this song this week—to do that, I have to practice day and night. If I succeed, I’ll record a video.

Will I make it? What do you think? 🤔😝☺️
