El mundo microscópico está lleno de animales raros y fascinantes que pasan desapercibidos para el hombre, poseemos miles de organismos vivos dentro de nuestro cuerpo, pero más extraño aún es que podemos tener estos seres diminutos encima de nosotros (fuera de nuestro cuerpo) y no verlos ni sentirlos.

Hace unos días en horas de la tarde me senté en el patio de la casa, de repente sentí algo incómodo en mi mano una sensación de cosquilleo, e intenté ver qué era, pero no vi nada, me coloque los lentes que uso por astigmatismo y miopía y veía algo, pero nada nítido, así que decidí abrir la cámara de mi celular y hacer Zoom, en ese momento me llevé una gran sorpresa.

Tenía sobre mi mano, cerca del dedo pulgar una pelusa, (que encierro en un círculo blanco en una de las fotos para que vean la dimensión), esa fue mi primera impresión, casi sacudo mi mano para quitarla, ah, pero al ver con el Zoom me llevé un susto, era un animal con un camuflaje perfecto, tenía casi mi color de piel, estaba vivo porque se movía y no hacía cualquier movimiento, era una danza desafiante con un arma letal que me invitaba a luchar, por el territorio 😝.

Siendo sincera sí me asusté, mi cámara se desenfocaba porque hacer un Zoom de 10× tan cerca hace que el celular se desenfoque y cada vez que lograba ver estaba este animal se movía de un lado a otro moviendo su cola y con su arma letal entre su boca u hocico, si observas bien tenía una hebra de cabello para su defensa personal, que supongo también era mía.

Su aspecto no es nada bonito, es muy feo y cada vez que podía verlo claramente me asustaba y no es broma literalmente le tuve miedo cuando pude ver su actitud y su fealdad. Por instinto quise sacudir mi mano y olvidarme de lo que tenía encima y lo que había visto, pero recordé en el concurso de Amazing Nature y controlé mi instinto de supervivencia. 😁😂.

Comencé a sacar fotos rápidamente, pues se movía de forma ágil y veloz, las primeras fotos se puede ver mi mano hasta con rasguños hechos por mi gato 🥲 me tiene más rayada que un bagre. Aparte del animal me llamó la atención mi piel cuanta arruga, resequedad y marcas 😔, pero eso es otro tema.

Chrysoperla carnea y es un insecto.

Características

Tamaño: Miden entre 2 y 10 mm de longitud cuando son pequeñas por eso es tan difícil verlas y cuando son adultas llegan a medir de 23 a 30 mm de longitud.

Color: Cambian de color a medida que crecen, al principio cuando nacen son incoloras y transparentes luego se vuelven crema o marrón claro a medina edad y en la fase adulta su color es verdoso.

Cuerpo: Tienen mandíbulas grandes que sobresalen hacia delante y patas bien desarrolladas, también poseen cola que se asemejan a la de un pequeño cocodrilo o caimán.

Comportamiento alimenticio: Su método de caza es sujetar a la presa con las pinzas, le inyectan enzimas digestivas para licuar sus órganos internos y luego absorben dichos fluidos. Son los propios depredadores. 🤢🤮

En ocasiones, la presa puede ser más grande que la propia larva. Por término medio, una larva consume entre 300 y 400 pulgones de distintos tamaños

Y cuando las presas escasean, las larvas pueden recurrir al canibalismo, 😵‍💫 comiéndose las larvas más jóvenes, pero cuando son adultas este comportamiento cambia porque comienzan alimentarse de exclusivamente de polen y néctar.

Importancia para el ecosistema y la agricultura

Las larvas de crisopa son un insecto beneficioso utilizado en agricultura como depredador natural de varios insectos plagas.

Las crisopas verdes atacan pulgones, orugas, cochinillas y otros insectos de cuerpo blando dañinos para las plantas. En la agricultura, se emplea como agente de control biológico para gestionar poblaciones de plagas. Las larvas de Crisopa verde son depredadores especialmente eficaces.

Los agricultores liberan directamente las larvas, existen métodos naturales para atraerlas y mantenerlas cerca del cultivo, esta técnica es muy interesante si deseas saber más información lo puedes leer en los recursos.

Lacewing Larvae — A charming monster from the micro world

The microscopic world is full of strange and fascinating animals that go unnoticed by humans. We have thousands of living organisms inside our bodies, but what’s even stranger is that we can have these tiny creatures on us (outside our bodies) without seeing or feeling them.

A few days ago, in the afternoon, I was sitting on my patio when I suddenly felt something uncomfortable on my hand—a tingling sensation. I tried to see what it was, but I couldn’t make anything out. I put on the glasses I wear for astigmatism and nearsightedness and could see something, but nothing clearly, so I decided to open the camera on my cell phone and zoom in. That’s when I got a big surprise.

There was a piece of lint on my hand, near my thumb (which I’ve circled in white in one of the photos so you can see the size)—that was my first impression. I almost shook my hand to brush it off, ah, but when I looked through the zoom, I got a real scare—it was an animal with perfect camouflage. It was almost the same color as my skin. It was alive because it was moving, and it wasn’t just any movement—it was a defiant dance with a lethal weapon, challenging me to fight for territory 😝.

To be honest, I was scared. My camera kept losing focus because zooming in 10× from such a close distance causes the phone to blur, and every time I managed to see it, this animal was darting back and forth, wagging its tail and holding its lethal weapon between its mouth or snout. If you look closely, it had a strand of hair for self-defense—which I suppose was also meant for me.

It doesn’t look pretty at all—it’s really ugly—and every time I could see it clearly, I got scared. I’m not kidding; I was literally afraid of it when I saw its demeanor and ugliness. Instinctively, I wanted to shake my hand and forget about what was on it and what I’d seen, but I remembered the Amazing Nature contest and controlled my survival instinct. 😁😂.

I started taking photos quickly, since it was moving nimbly and swiftly. In the first photos, you can even see my hand with scratches from my cat 🥲—it’s more scratched up than a catfish. Aside from the animal, I was struck by how wrinkled, dry, and marked my skin was 😔, but that’s another story.

Scientific Name

Chrysoperla carnea—it’s an insect.

Characteristics

Size: They measure between 2 and 10 mm in length when they’re young, which is why they’re so hard to spot, and as adults they can grow to be 23 to 30 mm long.

Color: They change color as they grow; at first, when they hatch, they are colorless and transparent; then they turn cream or light brown in middle age; and in the adult stage, their color is greenish.

Body: They have large mandibles that protrude forward and well-developed legs; they also have a tail that resembles that of a small crocodile or caiman.

Feeding behavior: Their hunting method involves grasping prey with their pincers, injecting digestive enzymes to liquefy its internal organs, and then absorbing those fluids. They are predators in their own right. 🤢🤮

Sometimes, the prey can be larger than the larva itself. On average, a larva consumes between 300 and 400 aphids of various sizes.

And when prey is scarce, the larvae may resort to cannibalism, 😵‍💫 eating younger larvae; however, once they reach adulthood, this behavior changes as they begin to feed exclusively on pollen and nectar.

Importance to the Ecosystem and Agriculture

Lacewing larvae are beneficial insects used in agriculture as natural predators of various insect pests.

Green lacewings prey on aphids, caterpillars, scale insects, and other soft-bodied insects that are harmful to plants. In agriculture, they are used as biological control agents to manage pest populations. Green lacewing larvae are particularly effective predators.

Final Thoughts

Lacewing larvae, or Chrysoperla carnea, are microscopic insects with a somewhat strange appearance that play an important role in agriculture, directly benefiting humans—provided they are young, since adults change their feeding habits and no longer contribute to biological control.
