To Neuter or Not to Neuter 🐱🤷🏼‍♀️ Castrar o no Castrar | Survey - Encuesta

Ever since my little kitten Hermosú came into my home, I’ve asked myself this question every day: to neuter or not to neuter? And although several months have passed since his arrival, I still don’t have the answer, but time doesn’t stand still, and I’m starting to feel anxious about this decision—one that may seem trivial to humans but is quite the opposite for an animal, in this case a male cat.

Sometimes I think it’s trendy to neuter cats, since everyone justifies this act, and I don’t want to seem irresponsible. But have you ever stopped to wonder for a moment how your pet feels without his testicles? Have you put yourself in his shoes? If he were female, this decision would already be made; without hesitation, I’d do it for several reasons—mainly to prevent her from breeding.

I’ve sat down to reflect on my stance, and I think I sound sexist 😆🤭 If he were female, I’d spay him without hesitation; since he’s male, I have doubts. Those doubts arose from a conversation I had with the same vet who helped me when he had the abscesses. I asked him at what age I should have him neutered, and he told me after 9 months, before he reached sexual maturity. I also asked him if it was a good idea to do it, and he said it depended on why I wanted to do it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

He asked me, “Is it so the cat doesn’t fight over females, or so he doesn’t run away from home?” “In the case of fighting, this behavior usually improves, and if you want him to stay home, there’s no guarantee.” That was his answer.

When the vet asked me these questions, I didn’t really know how to answer. What was my true motivation? Why did I want to do it? And I felt very selfish when I realized I would do it to prevent him from running away. If the main reason people neuter their male cats is this, they are very selfish and even cruel.

In the same conversation with the doctor, I told him I’d had many male cats and that in the end they all run away; he replied that I’d just had some ungrateful cats, and that if that’s the case, why punish Hermosú for what others have done? According to the vet, cats leave, whether they’re neutered or not, because it’s in their nature and nothing is going to stop them. His answer reassured me a little; deep down, I don’t want to do that.

And before you judge me, I’ll remind you that I haven’t made my final decision yet. I’m simply sharing some thoughts on the matter.

Another thing that has made me hesitate in my final decision is the cats belonging to my neighbors across the street. Let me tell you…

Across the street lives an elderly cat who is almost 16 years old; he no longer has ears from all the fights he’s been in, and his owners tell me that sometimes he goes missing for a week, but he always comes back. That cat still has his testicles, which means he wasn’t neutered. He lived his life to the fullest.

20260603_181955.jpg

Next door to this house, at my other neighbor’s place, there’s another cat; he’s fat, looks lonely, and meows a lot at full volume; the reason is that he stays in the yard and wants to get into the house; when he’s alone, without his human family, he meows too. I always thought it was a female cat; I even talked to the neighbors. It’s a neutered male cat suffering from separation anxiety; he cries over everything and doesn’t dare leave the house.

Which do you think is the happiest cat? Between these two examples, if you ask me, I’d say the older cat, who leaves the house, socializes, and returns to his shelter whenever he wants. I’m not thinking about myself anymore; I don’t want to condemn Hermosú to living with me simply because I feed him or because, selfishly, I don’t want to suffer his abandonment.

Hermosú is 6 months old; I have 4 or 5 months left to decide whether to neuter him or not. I’ll try to post a poll so you can help me make a decision, and if you’d like, you can leave a comment to share your opinion, tell me about your experience, or say whatever you want.

The photos accompanying this post are from a day when he lay down on the phone table because it’s high; there he watches himself and plays with his reflection—he seemed to be getting along with it 😁

Do you have anything against "Time Travel?"

I am gonna send you back in time. To read what I have learned about the spay/neutering issue.

Keep in mind the overpopulation and how many kittens will suffer a horrible fate. How many kittens will "Mr.Hermosú" produce in his lifetime? ALOT.!! The survival instinct in them when unchecked by spay/neuter is strong. Do some research like I did on the feline mating rituals. The word RAPE will come to your mind instantly.

Also an "outdoor cat" as we like to call them and justify that by their rights to freedom. Statistically speaking a 5 year feral outdoor cat life span on average compared to 15+ on indoor fixed and taken care of "jailbird kitties"

Please watch these short videos. For the kittens He will make...

Who is the Cat Daddy?

Research Jackson Galaxy. He is one of the leading and most experienced cat behaviorist alive IMO. He puts it this way...

"There is Nothing selfish or cruel about wanting your cat to live longer. They can have a quality life indoors with some work on our part."

Here is the time travel I spoke of and what I went thru with my decision so many years ago. Please read chapter 6 snd the link to 5 is in that chapter. If you want to know what I went thru with the spay/neutering dilemma.

It was not an easy decision for me. But once your past the warm and fuzzy part of it and realize the violence of the mating ritual and overpopulation there really is no other answer. The longer healthier lifetime we get to share with them is a bonus for both our cats and us...

Chapter 6

PS..: Do not let others uninformed opinions make this decision for you.
I almost did that many years ago...

Hi @krazzytrukker 🥰🐱, friend, thanks for being here.

I’ve read everything you sent me and watched the videos; I was already familiar with “The Cat Lover,” but it’s hard to find episodes in Spanish. Thank you so much.

I’ve had other cats in the past; they came into my home because they were given to me as gifts, with the exception of Hermosú, whom we found inside the house without knowing where he came from.

They’ve all been male; we never neutered the others due to ignorance and lack of financial resources; now we’re in the same situation, without resources, but I have more experience and maturity.

I won’t deny that I’m going through a personal crisis over this; there are days when I’m determined to neuter him and others when I refuse. I’m struggling with this decision; even if it seems exaggerated, that’s how it is.

My mother is helping me, and my brother has accepted that it’s for the best. I understand the benefits of neutering and, above all, that it will keep him away from fights and future illnesses.

With my previous cats, I used to take care of them when they came home injured. I don’t want that anymore; I’m getting older and I also have health issues (it seems to be something serious), so I don’t want to leave future problems for my kitten or my family.

Thank you very much for your understanding; I’ll make the best decision.

You do what's best for You. That will be whats best for Hermosú. I read about your health issues. I have been in a struggle of my own. They said with age comes wisdom. Too bad we have to be falling apart and smart. I would rather have stayed dumb and young. 😳
