Finally Got Around to Making More Storage On My Work Bench

avatar

Little by little my beast of a mobile work bench in coming together. I call it my Lineman Work bench because I made it out of used materials from the old powerlines. I posted a while ago about how I built it Here, Here and I added a Router Table Attachment. It sits on a set of castors so I can move it easily around the garage. 3/4 of it has a smooth wood top and hopefully soon I will buy a piece of steel to cover the rest for welding. My vice mounts to it and I have a bunch of other plans for tool storage, battery chargers, 120v outlets and all kinds of other stuff I haven’t thought about yet.

My garage does this thing where it will be clean for a week then a tornado comes though and it a complete disaster again… tools and random stuff everywhere!!

After struggling to find tools and make my way through the chaos, I finally found that thing called motivation and got to cleaning and organizing. After 3 hours things didn’t look much better than I started. Shaking my head, I just kept at it. It’s like putting 100 pounds of sh… stuff in a 2 pound box.

I managed to give this fuel tank to my buddy that took up all the space under my workbench. Back when I upgraded my fuel tank in my truck from a 16 gallon to a 38 gallon in my truck, I accidentally ordered the wrong one. It so happens that it had will fit in his 1972 ford. AWESOME!! Now I have space available for all my 120 volt power tools and battery operated tools. Get those bad boys out of the cupboard and tool bags for ease access!!

The initial plan was to put expanded metal underneath the table but I decided to go with some 1/4 inch plywood. It’s a lot cheaper and I have some laying around. With the welded cross brace in the middle it should be able to handle quite a bit of weight.

I figured the best way to get this plywood in there would be in two pieces. I measured and notched out for the legs and trimmed it down to span halfway across the opening.

I left the ends long so it is supported by a piece of metal that connects the ends of the cross brace.

Cut another piece dang near identical to the first and Ta-Da I’ve got a nice storage area under my work bench

Time to load it up with tools! Most of my 120 volt corded tools stay in the boxes they came in. They stacked nicely on the one side. I have a couple corded tools that were given to me so they don’t have a nice storage box for them.

On the other side all my battery operated tools and a couple corded tools lay in there pretty nice. It may look like a pile of tools but it’s actually organized chaos.

Now that looks a million times better than when the day began. I couldn’t see the top of the table or the table along the wall. Tools, car parts, wood, steel, rubber tubing, wiring… CRAP EVERYWHERE!!

Now that things are cleaned up an organized, I can actually walk through my garage and work on stuff. All is well again in the Splatts Garage… Until I start another project… and Tornado Splatts strikes again

Hopefully I will be able to do all my DIY projects without leaving the table. That’s the goal anyway 😉

I have this thing now where I make myself clean the garage before I go buy any kind of new tool. About half the time I find what I was going to buy!

That’s funny because I found a dial indicator that was still in the box it was delivered. Never been opened. I order it when I was rebuilding my transmission but never had to use it.

A few years ago, I spent a couple hundred bucks buying new blades for all my saws. During my shop clean-up, before starting new woodworking projects, I found brand new blades I already had for about 75% of them!

DAHAHAHA I’ve done that exact thing. “I’m not sure if I have these and if I do I don’t know where they are… better buy some more” Then you end up with a lifetime supply. LOL
