In the spirit of International Men's day || What makes a Man?

My Thumbnails (36).jpg

Yesterday was International Men's Day, and I was able to know that through a message from my little sister wishing me "Happy International Men's Day.". I was quite surprised by the message, as I am not used to being celebrated as a man, unlike women, who have up to six celebrations in a year.

I smiled when I saw my sister's message and said it out loud to my cousin, who is much older than me, that my little sister just wished me "Happy International Men's Day". Then he came up straight at me, asking the question, Are you a man?

The question felt weird, like an insult, and I looked at him straight up, asking him, How am I not a man? Since he is asking me if I am a man, I asked him back: What makes me not a man to be asking such a question?

Then he asked me another question: What makes a man? Then we started to think about the question. Hmm, what actually makes a man? I would not lie; I didn't really know what to say exactly when he asked the question, but I said two things: a man provides, and a man is focused on his career.

So here are what I think are the ideal qualities of a man:

Responsibility

While discussing this with my cousin, he said that responsibility is the first quality that makes a man; it was even the first thing God asked of a man when he created him. He made man responsible for the earth and all things on it. For one to be recognised as a man, he should be able to take responsibility for everything he has.

A Provider

Men are naturally known to be providers in any relationship, and this is one important quality of a man. A man would not be respected if he did not provide, and he would lose respect for it. Even in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, it is natural for the guy to be the one who gives the most, as it is in his nature to provide. This is another reason why I don't really advise men who find it hard to foot their own bills to be in a relationship, as it would be much more difficult to provide for someone else if you could not yet provide for yourself.

Courageous and Assertiveness

It is in the nature of a man to be courageous and assertive. He should be able to know what he wants, make decisions, and take responsibility for it. He should be able to stand through challenges, be resilient, and be confident in himself.

A Leader and a Protector

A man is naturally seen to be a leader and one who protects the ones he loves. He guides and leads the way by making decisions. As a leader, a man should be knowledgeable and wise in his actions and decision-making.

Have God

The last quality my cousin and I spoke about was that a man should have God in him. He should have God to look up to, surrender, and ask for guidance and strength over the things he lays his hands on.

These are good qualities indeed. Any man that has all or 90% of these qualities is worthy to be called a man.
Sometimes it’s funny when someone said I’m a man, then you look at him and see a boy instead, lol.

This was a very nice conversation with your cousin, sharing it here gives others the opportunity to learn from it.

Maybe I should think of what makes one a woman🤔😁

I didn't know it was Men's Day until my younger brother sent a text as well.

Truly having balls and a third leg doesn't define being a man. The things you have mentioned actually define a man and that's why sometimes, I call some women a man because they possess a man's quality.

You've mentioned the basic attribute of a man. Responsibility is always number one as the family, friends and society will always demand for it from every man.

And same with other attributes that makes up a man... it's more of what the society demands because we are men cant run from it.
