LECTURERS CAN BE FUNNY!!! || READ THIS TO KNOW WHY

avatar
(Edited)

Being a student is certainly not easy, with so many courses to read up on and understand in order to do well in these courses. Consider this: a single student at my university can take up to ten courses in a semester and a maximum of 24 units per semester, whereas a lecturer can only take one course for a class. The question is, why can't a lecturer take all of the courses since we students are required to read all of them?

It would not be simple for a lecturer to do it, just as it is not simple for students. One of the most annoying things is when professors present straightforward examples in class but give harder problems to solve on assignments, tests, and exams. Furthermore, these lecturers would be unable to manually resolve the problems without consulting the already written solutions when it came time to provide answers to the questions.

The scenario occurred in class today. The lecturer was teaching Engineering Mathematics, which is a difficult course for all students. The lecturer was not consistent with us throughout the class and rushed through the notes and calculations for us, not caring if we understood the examples provided. I was enraged because it was infuriating for many of us who needed time to process these calculations before we could fully comprehend them.

Unfortunately for me, the topic was Solutions to Ordinary Differential Equations, which requires an advanced understanding of integration and differentiation, and I had forgotten most of the basics I needed to know on this topic, so I had a difficult time following what the lecturer was saying. Furthermore, he was simply writing the solutions on the board, not carrying the entire class along.

After rushing through four to five examples, he turned back to us and said, "Tear a sheet of paper for a test." "Is this Man Serious?" I wondered, but he was. Then he gave us a test on the topic he discussed in class. Let's say he made it an open book test so we could follow the steps he used in the examples; it would have been very convenient for us, but he said he must not catch anyone checking through their notes.

untitled.gif

Unfortunately for me, I enjoy sitting at the front of the class, directly in front of the lecturer, so that I can easily grasp what is being taught. As a result, I couldn't open my note to remember the steps he took to solve the examples. I got lost during the test because I am the type of person who is proud and does not know how to ask a neighbour for help while taking tests and exams. I prefer to concentrate on my work.

I tried so hard to remember how he solved the examples, but it was so difficult for me to solve the test question because he didn't carry us along as he solved the example questions. I could only recall a few things, not everything and not in the correct order. I had no choice but to submit my test sheet in this manner, knowing full well that I would receive low marks if the test was graded.

I was hurt... I was in so much pain that I couldn't answer the question. I remember being the best in Mathematics in secondary school (high school) and passing every test I took. In fact, there was a session where I received a score of 99/100 in Mathematics for my tests and exams. Now tell me how I got here... I understand that the level of difficulty varies in high school mathematics, but it should not have gone this badly for me.

untitled.gif

Anyways, I believe I can be better and I just need to put in more effort and time...

Back to our discussion about today's class...

This lecturer gave us 15 mins to solve the test question he gave us, then collected the test sheet from us and after that, he decided to solve the question himself. I was laughing when the man could not solve the question himself without looking at the solutions written in his note. The funniest thing is that he used more than 15 mins to solve the question because he tried to explain it but he was making some minute mistakes. Obviously, he would have used far less than 15 mins if he would have written the solutions straight up from his note.

I was now wondering how this man expected us to know something he rushed us in without proper explanation, how he expected us to pass his test when he couldn't solve the same question he gave us without looking at the solution he had already written down. How does that make sense?

Perhaps he expects us to have read ahead of the class, which is possible because some students do, but for me, it is difficult because of my activities and I am falling behind in some courses. There are some courses in which I know nothing and understand nothing since the first lecture.

untitled.gif

Every class, it's as if I'm listening to Mandarin.

Most of the courses I am taking involve calculations because I am studying Mechatronics Engineering... I'm taking a total of 11 classes this semester, two of which are practical, one of which is Engineering Entrepreneurship, and the other eight are calculus-based. I'm still trying to picture in my head how I would manage the calculations for each of these courses right now. I'm doing my best to study hard now rather than wait until exams are close by because it will be much more difficult to meet up then and it will be crazy to try to finish a whole semester's worth of material in one night.

This is likely the cause of my lack of activity here, and I am also keeping busy by attending an online school in addition to my regular classes.

My beloved, @starstrings01, come, I'll break down differential calculus for you. I'll do anything for my crush 😁

Don't get pissed off by your lecturer, he is just trying to weed laziness out of you guys since you have been away for too long, he's hoping to remind you that school is back in session 😃

Oh my goodness 🤭😂😂😅
This is unbelievable 😂, imagine a lecturer couldn't solve the question he expected his students to solve..

Why is he looking at his books for solution if truly he prepared for that class. The truth is that , had it been he prepared well for that topic, he would have explained it better for you guys and solving it wouldn't have been a problem to both him and the students.

Honestly, I can relate to this kind of lecturer those days in my university...they expect students to know so many things at same time but them take only one or two courses.

Well, let me say, they have passed the student level and therefore act the way that pleases them .

Just like you said, you are working hard already, please work hard, if possible read ahead of your course outlines.... I understand how engaged you are with so many activities plus ur online course but then, you really need to work out on balancing things so you can graduate in peace before they come up with another strike 👏👍

More grace in your life endeavors🙏

I was feeling like shouting in the class saying: Hello sir, if e sure for you, drop that book you are holding and solve the question by hand let us see... But I sincerely want to graduate so I can't try it one bit.

Mann... You forgot what Nigerian government did to ASUU right...?😄😄 Lecturers are pouring their anger on students now oo, maybe that lecturer was with the mindset of incomplete salary so no complete teaching... But this is really unfair ooo because I can't imagine other standardized country handling their educational system as this...In Our country everybody de vex now ooo, that lecturer couldn't hide his own to you guys..
Broo, you can still come out with good grade for that course oo, you should pay more attention to this course you wrote the test on so that you will do extra good to cover for today's test...
I am studying biochemistry but I did some of those mathematics back then in 100level and 200level but right now as you are calling the names of those topics, I de feel like Don D. became I cannot remember anything again😄😄😄

Hmm, that is not fair sha but it is well, at least you know it was not because you are dull that will make you fail the test, It is obvious that if you have an opportunity to study a little more about that topic, you would have had just few mistakes, so I will love to encourage you to keep encouraging yourself.

And as you even saw, the lecturer was also struggling to find solutions to the problem he gave, you are doing really well and that is what matters, just keep doing your best and leave the rest. Of course, that is one major reason why students are better than their teachers because they get exposed to more knowledge than their teachers.

Me I love mathematics but I'm not good at it one bit, I take a lot of time to understand what is taught when it comes to mathematics. I'm not a book person sha, if you want to use book to mark my intelligence I will fail hands down, lolz.

Don't mind your lecturer ehn, I'm sure when he gets home he will think on what he did, except of course he is the I don't care person 😅😅. Sending you some !LUV or !PIZZA? Which ever is available, haha.

I love the way you encourage me and try to make me feel better. I really appreciate you for this. Yeah, if I have had enough time to understand and practice the topic better, I am sure I would have done a lot better at the test.

the lecturer was also struggling to find solutions to the problem he gave

He is not the only lecturer I have noticed this stuff about. Some lecturers in my department always give us questions they themselves cannot solve by hand without holding a book containing the solutions. To be honest, it is annoying.

I'm not a book person sha, if you want to use book to mark my intelligence I will fail hands down, lolz.

I am not a book person either, reading is the least thing I love doing, but I have gotten to know that it is important for one's growth, so I always force myself to read most especially when it comes to school settings like this.

Don't mind your lecturer ehn, I'm sure when he gets home he will think on what he did..

I totally doubt if it would even glance through his mind for a second when he gets home.

This is Nigeria lecturers for you. They basically employ most of them based on connection and not really merit, about that last year I had this lecturer who could fail you if you try to spot out their mistake. Just do and leave the god-damned place. It's crazy, do the best you can. Remember, find a way to shuffle it, you have to get it working especially some time for here too.

Plus, this December, we gas go out, no?

Nawa ooo 😂😂😂
This is serious than I thought it to be. Those topics you mentioned look so hard for me to pronounce 😅

But some lecturers are really funny. They'd expect students to study all semester's courses, whereas they can't take all. How on earth do you expect a student to read and cram like 10 courses for exams which is close whereas they used over three months to teach us?

As if that is not enough... They will give us simple calculations to solve in class but it will look like someone trying to figure out how to spill a rock for a few minutes 😂😂😂 you even start looking for Y where it wasn't missing. Nawa for them. But wetin student go do? We no get choice.

The only thing is to read hard for exams since you weren't able to do the test well. The lecturer should cover his face in embarrassment because he only messed himself up.

At least a lecturer who had studied and known what he is teaching will not even be looking at his note for solution which he just solved on the board. Some aren't competent at all and it's a total shame on them.

God will help you with your exams.

How on earth do you expect a student to read and cram like 10 courses for exams which is close whereas they used over three months to teach us?

Do you know the funny thing... This semester is a very short semester, so we would be using only 8 weeks to learn everything that should be learnt for 12 weeks before writing exams. The space to learn is cut short and the work is cumbersome.

They will give us simple calculations to solve in class but it will look like someone trying to figure out how to spill a rock for a few minutes 😂😂😂 you even start looking for Y where it wasn't missing.

I always love lecturers that set questions that from their tests, examples and exercises. This way we would know what to expect in our tests and exams.. And we would not be stressing our brains when there are a lot of other courses to read and prepare for.

God will help you with your exams.

Amen oh! This prayer is very necessary.

This is quite typical of every maths lover.
Each level of difficulty is an adventure and I must say I love that lecturer. You all will not easily forget that class and the serious ones will take it seriously even tho he may not eventually record the test 😂

yeah every level of difficulty is an adventure. but it would have been great let's say he allows us to under his examples perfectly well before giving a harder question for the test. I love facing challenging questions because of the zeal it gives but not when I don't even fully understand the examples.
