Nigeria's Fuel Costs: Gas Conversion Challenges and Financial Strain

Nigeria's Fuel Costs.jpg

We all know that the cost of fuel in Nigeria has increased so much, and it is affecting quite a lot of things. I knew about this but I had not really felt it so much until yesterday night which was very painful in a way.

I have been writing about converting my generator to gas, which I have done by buying a hybrid caburator for my generator which would allow my generator to run both on gas and also on fuel, depending on what I want to use.

But since I have bought the caburator, I have not really been enjoying it running on gas, I face serious issues. One of the issues I face is that the gas regulator does not read any pressure on my gas, making it seem as if there is no gas in my cylinder.

When I put on my generator, it does not take long, it turns off as if there is no gas again in the cylinder but anytime I take back my cylinder to the gas station, they tell me that there is still gas in it. I have been in a confused state thinking what could be the problem.

I have friends, although not close to my location, who are presently running their generators on gas and are enjoying having the electricity at a cheaper price. Imagine running your generator for 4hours on just one kg of gas, i.e. you are just spending 680 naira which is approximately $0.75

Rain fell that yesterday, which means that there would be no electricity for me. Since I didn't want to be unproductive, I decided to try out my generator again, I went to get 1kg gas inside my cylinder, in case there may not be gas in it again truly and tried running it on my gen, but I kept facing the same problems repeatedly.

So this time, I decided to turn my gas cylinder upside down to see if I would get enough pressure to flow inside the generator but it was still the same just that this time, the gas was leaking through the regulator while being upside down. I got so frustrated that I had to trek to the filling station in the night which is a little far from where I stay to buy fuel for my generator. I ended up with the option of using petrol again.

For buying petrol of #2000 naira which is approximately $2.22, I got 3.33 liters of fuel in my keg. I went home to put on my generator to see how it goes. Can you believe that 3.33 liters of fuel only used 1 hour 30mins on my generator.

Wow, in just 1 hour 30 mins, $2 had gone just like that. I was pained because if I gas was to work properly, spending $2 on my gas should give me 12 hours of electricity.

I cannot continue like this buying fuel at this rate and having it to finish this early. I would really broke if I do so.

Today, I would try another experiment. Since I have a smaller gas, I would try it with my generator to see if it would work. I would come with a feedback soon...

Having no electricity can be tough and even more so when using a generator to power up things and stay productive. You mentioned that you know others who are using the same set up and they are enjoying it. I do not know the technicalities but perhaps there is something wrong with the setup of your machine on how the carburetor was connected?

Hope you will be able to find a solution to the issue.

Yeah... I hope to figure it out this week. This would make life easier for me.

I would contact a generator technician tomorrow if what I plan trying today would not work.

That's awesome then :) May your plan work so you won't be needing to pay a technician to get it fixed hehe. All the best :)

I am sorry, bro. But I couldn't help but laugh at the way I could sense the frustration in your words here. It's not a hilarious matter, though. I can imagine the level of annoyance you would have felt.

I totally forgot to ask about your generator and see how it functioned when I was at your place yesterday. Perhaps we could hve tackled the issue together and gotten a solution or something.

Have you tried searching online on similar problems and the solutions people came up with? I'd like to believe that you are not the only one experiencing this problems.
