What is the good time to curate on Hive for higher Curation rewards?

avatar

So finally, this is my first post on @quello.
The main advantages of manual curation is that, we get to know about all the latest update and @quello happen to me like that. Earlier I used to put up question on #askthehive community, but now looking at the growing @quello craze, i thought try this platform as well.

My Question:

what is the best time to curate any hive content to get higher reward??

Curation is important, and it is the alternate way to earn rewards. after the last hard fork, I understood that the best time was between 4-5min of posting that generate handsome reward. But now I notices that many of the top curators are autovoting at 3-4 min of posting.

Many curators are still unsure of the exact time to generate higher rewards. Hopefully, I will get the answer through this new platform.

5 minutes is the cut off for receiving penalties on voting but I think the rule of thumb is this. If you vote at:

0 minutes - 100% penalty on curation rewards
1 minute - 80% penalty
2 minutes - 60% penalty
3 minutes - 40 % penalty
4 minutes - 20% penalty
5 minutes - 0 % penalty

But better rewards also depends on if other people vote on the post after you have. So sometimes it's better to take a hit on penalty vs risk of higher vote coming in from a bigger account.

Obviously if you discover new posts, vote at 5 minutes that then go on to receive great support, you will maximise your curation return and this is the best scenario. However, you can also get some great curation rewards even after a couple of hours, maybe even a day as long as someone votes after you!

Either way, you will always get something back when you vote even if you upvote something late on, it may just be a small amount

Hope this helps!

Amazing, u seems to have a detailed analysis done for the curation....as far as my understanding the first 3 min I have seen no movement on any post.....but many top curators like realwolf or other big wallet user put their auto curation exactly at 3 min on some of the regular top authors....account....

Considering they are doing it intentionally even at 40% of penalty is something undigestable.....some of the other used to put at 4-5 min...so still the picture is uncertain...the so called hive owners vs the common user...the timing are not matching @nickyhavey

That's because they have colossal amounts of Hive Power and so can afford to front run other curation efforts by voting earlier. They make up the losses from the curation penalty by virtue of the fact that everyone else is voting later than them and so will usually make a profit.

A couple of % upvote from the big accounts is often a few dollars so they spread out their votes far and wide.

For users with less HP, voting at 3 minutes is probably not going to pay off as much because the penalty will have more effect.

Hope that makes sense

Indeed...your explanation makes the confusion vmcrystal clear...🙂 worth to understand the basic of curation and also to make things more clear....overall for curation first 5min is important whereas to value the content anytime is important.

Yeah curation rewards are an interesting beast ever since the 50/50 author/curator split fork last year.

But you are right whether a post has $0.01 or $100 (in our dreams 😁) if you like the content, you like the content hey? Just have to be smart with how you use your voting power

That's true and healthy way to keep the hive going...else every content get stale within 24hrs....the hard work of every author must be valued...

Yeah definitely, if I read something I'll try to comment on it and make it relevant to the post and spark conversation, like we have here, or it becomes stale like you say and no one wants that!

Bringing clarity on any subject is always good....just assume even after being active here I could not figure out the basic thing on curation ...and you just bring a great detailed insight....and it was always helpful...sharing is caring...👍
Usually I don't get into any long conversation unless it was not fruitful...and this time I just got better understanding with each conversation....quite a healthy one...💪

Different posts are upvoted by different people at different timing. Some said that we need to upvote before a bigger upvote than ours so that that upvote can incease our upvote. The closer to 5 min gives us higher reward so I guess it can be hard to balance both.

That's true...but deciding the best time is confusing...people who curate more looks for rewards rather than valuing the content.....which is quite important to make hive a better place

I mostly see the rewards on a post before voting. If the value is low I vote even if the post is around a day or more old. If it's already above 1.5 or 2 then I refrain from voting even fresh posts unless they're top notch in quality and I think they deserve more.

Here user votes only within 24 hrs of posting. The post becomes stale after 24. The pattern of top curators applies same logic to...they curate any good content withing first 24 hrs

I'm aware of that. Most posts do go stale after 24h. But I have seen curators voting my post with fat votes on the 6th day as well. And I was mostly saying about my manual curation style.

If you want to only maximize curation rewards, catch hold of accounts that get upwards of 30$ and put an autovoter on them at 3-4min forgetting about the 5 minute penalty. You'll get good results. You'll have to keep optimizing based on observations.
