It's that time of year when I am beginning to plant my veggies because throughout the whole summer, I eat a lot of them and I prefer my homegrown vegetables since I truly know exactly what I am eating. So in today's post, I will walk you through the preparation of my garden. This particular garden belongs to my grandmother, and she is the one who taught me everything I need to know about planting a garden and growing veggies. When she was younger, she was really poor, and by growing her own vegetables, she was able to save money and put healthy food on the table.

The garden was not attended from November until now. We didn't grow anything in winter, and I also couldn't find the time to hoe it, so a lot of wild weeds have grown, as you can see in the photos. In preparation for growing my veggie garden, I had to remove any weeds or debris and loosen the soil with a garden fork and shovel. Any weeds I found, I put in a compost basket and tried to make my own compost. When you plant veggies every year, the soil loses all of its fertility, so every year I have to add a lot of compost to provide the soil with the nutrients that my veggies will need. The higher the quality of my compost, the better it is for my veggies.

After the soil is clean, I broke the hard soil with a hoe and then leveled the soil and removed any remaining weeds with a rake. After all of that is ready, I am leaving the soil to rest and start its own process of enriching the dirt with nutrients. Tomorrow, I will create planting beds that are 1.5 meters wide and 8-12 inches deep. This will provide enough space for my vegetables to grow and allow for easy access for weeding and harvesting. I will also leave some space between my planting beds, at least 0.8-1 meter apart, to allow for easy movement between them.

I also have an old Green house that i bought some years back from Lidl to grow some herbs like Oregano , mint , thyme and others but unfortunately it got torned apart by the wind so i am going to use it this year to grow my cucumbers there and that way i won't have to build a cage because Cucumbers are a vine plant and will need support to climb as they grow.

While a lot of weeds grow when my garden is unattended, some mint, dill, and parsley also grow without me doing anything. Two months ago, I also planted some lettuces and a weird green veggie that my grandmother uses to make Greek Pita.

So my soil is ready i have already devised my plan on what and where i will grow everything so after i post this i am of to a greenhouse to buy the plants and start planting. I will Plant the following:

Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Green Pepers
eggplants
pumpkins

Any suggestion?

congratulations , i also love gardening, just keep in mind that rocks and solids in the soil are not good company for the roots at all.

You can also plant some lettuce 🥬. We eat it in Nigeria and it's highly nutritious and rich in iron, it's just about the same type of soil. I think you have a very good soil here. There's nothing like planting one's food really. Goodluck with the planting season, all the best.

Great job! Gardening is a lot of fun! Keeping your own compost is a great idea as well. I always plant hot peppers (jalapenos, habaneros...) buy only because I love spicy food. Great choices though!

Herbs are always a good idea, it's always better to know where your food is really coming from!

Good luck with your gardening effort! Home grown fruits and veggies are the best :) My recommendation would be chili peppers (Habaneros and higher, in terms of SHU), I love them! :)

What doesn´t kill you makes you stronger ;) I fell in love with very hot chili peppers when I lived in Mexico, they put them everywhere :D

Good job clearing the space, I bet that was a nice workout too!
I also have a few veg beds, and so far I’m growing potatoes, red onions in one, and will add some cabbages once they are bigger.
Yesterday I cleaned another bed and planted sunflowers, corn and beans as a little experiment to see how well they grow together. I’m also going to add more beans and some courgette/zucchini to that bed.
This leaves me with one more bed, and I haven’t decided what to plant there yet.
