Sunday's Suggestion of 3 Eras Noir films

avatar

I will make a Sunday Suggestion for Noir Movies but it's not just one movie!!

Top-10 of my favorite noirs from the three periods of the genre.

The first list concerns the classic period of the genre, namely the American cinema of the 40s-50s, the second the revival of the noir style in the 60s to the 90s, and the third concerns the 21st century and its own versions of noir revival.

I limited myself to one film per director on each list, otherwise the first one would have pretty much just Billy Wilder and Nicholas Ray, while the next ones would probably have more Michael Mann and the Coen brothers.

That's it, lists, and if you're baking, make your own in the comments:

40s-50s CLASSIC NOIR:

  1. White Heat (Raoul Walsh, 1949)

My dad used to have a collection that had some of these movies. I could never bring myself to watch them as a kid but as I get older, I find myself more interested in them

I pride myself as a movie freak, but I've never actually seen any ot theses movies, not as a child or as an adult. Great collection. I'll check out the thrillers. Is noir a particular kind of movie genre?

Yes. It’s crime dramas that emphasise in love crimes where almost always there is a lady in distress

on your list, I have only seen White Heat (great Cagney film) and Chinatown, which is pretty darn good. One film that I think is top notch is Double Indemnity (1944) with Fred McMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and an incredible performance by Edward G. Robinson in a supporting role. I had to look up the director on this one: Billy Wilder. If you have never seen it, and would surprised if you haven't you should take the time to give it a run.
