Odd effects
Although there is a problem with this guitar community in that I do not have the main keys, I still feel that I can post here to reach a few guitarists. We can look at moving to or creating a new community.
The world of guitar effects adds to the fun of #guitar playing. You can always buy one more pedal to add another shade to your tone. There are dozens of variations on some classic pedals such as the Fuzz Face or Tube Screamer. Manufacturers need to come up with something different to attract attention.
Rainger Minibar
I heard this pedal mentioned on the Chasing Tone podcast. It is a distortion where the sound is affected by what liquid you put into the small container on top. It can be water, coffee, alcohol or anything really that will not damage it. It seems the opacity and conductivity of the liquid is what make a difference. I wonder how they came up with that idea.
Korg Miku
This one has been around for a while. From what I understand it makes sounds like some Japanese animated singer. I guess you could try and make her talk, but I cannot see this having many applications in music.
T.Rex Replicator
This is a little more conventional in that it is a modern version of the old tape echo boxes in a much more compact, and possibly more robust, form. I was at a pub gig years ago where they used a big old tape echo for the vocals and a beer glass fell and broke the tape. I think they used a guitar pedal for the rest of the gig. I get that tape will have a certain sound, but I would think a digital effect could do a pretty good emulation these days. Still, a lot of music for the musician is about feel and the way an effect reacts to how you play can be subtle, but important.
Zoom G3X Bomber
My own pedals are fairly conventional with some overdrives, distortion and wah, but I have a Zoom G3X multi-effects unit with many virtual pedals in it. The oddest may be the Bomber that basically makes an explosion sound when it picks up anything from the guitar. It does not even seem to vary much. I have not found a use for it. I do need to experiment more with other effects as there is such a range and I have only really used a few of them.
Do you have any strange effects or have you seen any out there?
I'm quite intrigued by the Rainger Mini-Bar one, quite the concept.
Not very whacky but I have been itching to buy the Electro-Harmonix C9 for some time. As soon as my pesky kids are a bit older and I get more time I think I will be getting it :O)
I liked the look of that when it came out. I had a band ages ago that it could have been useful for, but it didn't last. Could have done some of those Deep Purple organ parts.
I had similar issue when trying to get into my community account I created. I then added my community account name to keychain, clicked the import keys, and then all was fine. A simple solution if it works for you. I only ever got that one account password, so try just adding your hive number name to keychain and give it a shot.
I tried various combinations of the keys I could find, but somehow I must have messed up. Another one I made is fine. It's not a big deal as this community is small and now very active.
It could be all different over the weekend with the hive.io coming on friday. I'm kind of looking forward to it, a new fresh start.
I like the fact that they just look cool. Forget how they sound :) The whole steampunk vibe some of them have is really cool. Thanks for sharing.
I could probably do another post on effects that look odd. I've seen some shaped like a skull. In a crowded market you need something to make your products stand out.
