Arles is a town in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. It has about 50,000 inhabitants and covers an area of about 760 km²

Arles è un paese della regione Provenza-Alpi-Costa Azzurra e si trova in Francia. Ha circa 50.000 abitanti e si estende per una superficie di circa 760 km²

According to some, Arles is one of the most beautiful cities in southern France. It is also considered a city on a human scale as its centre is not huge and can be visited on foot.

Secondo alcuni Arles è una delle più belle città di tutta la Francia meridionale, ritenuta anche una città a misura d’uomo in quanto il suo centro non è enorme e si può visitare a piedi.

This city has had a very long history. It began as a Celtic settlement, became the Roman capital of Gaul, Brittany and Spain.

Questa città ha avuto una storia lunghissima. Nacque come insediamento celtico, divenne la capitale romana della Gallia, della Bretagna e della Spagna.

The beauty of this city probably also comes from the fact that it has a very important historical past. Arles was an important Greco-Massalian trading emporium, and in Roman times it took on proper urban characteristics. With that transformation, Arles became one of the most flourishing metropolises in Gaul.

La bellezza di questa città probabilmente arriva anche dal fatto che possiede un passato storico molto importante. Arles fu un rilevante emporio commerciale greco-massaliota, e nell’epoca romana assunse caratteristiche propriamente urbane. Con quella trasformazione Arles diventò una delle metropoli più fiorenti delle Gallie.

The city was once surrounded by walls that helped it against possible enemy attacks, while the other natural barrier that allowed Arles to live peacefully was the Rhone River.

La città in passato era circondata da mura che la aiutavano contro gli eventuali attacchi nemici, mentre l’altra barriera naturale che permetteva ad Arles di vivere tranquillamente era il fiume Rodano.

The main square in the old town is Place de la République. the square is a large pedestrian island and is surrounded by historical buildings.

La piazza principale del centro storico è Place de la République. la piazza è un grande isola pedonale ed è circondata da edifici storici.

One of the historic buildings on the Place de la République square is the cathedral of Arles: Saint Trophime. Of the cathedral, the imposing portal overlooking the square is immediately noticeable. The portal is made of stone, expertly carved and dates back to the 12th century.

Uno degli edifici storici di piazza Place de la République è la cattedrale di Arles: Saint Trophime. Della cattedrale si nota immediatamente l’imponente portale che dà sulla piazza. Il portale è costruito in pietra, sapientemente intagliato e risale al XII secolo.

The Place de la République is also home to the Hôtel de ville, a beautiful Baroque palace built in the 17th century. This palace is classified as a historical monument and is currently the seat of the town hall of Arles.

In Place de la République si trova anche Hôtel de ville, un bellissimo palazzo in stile barocco costruito nel XVII secolo. Questo palazzo è classificato come monumento storico ed è attualmente la sede del municipio di Arles.

In the middle of the Place de la République square stands the Obelisk of Arles, an anepigraphic monolithic obelisk of Roman origin about 20 metres high. The obelisk was erected in the 4th century when Constantine, one of the most important figures of the Roman Empire, was at the head of it.

In mezzo alla piazza di Place de la République si trova l’Obelisco di Arles, un obelisco monolitico anepigrafico di origine romana alto circa 20 metri. L'obelisco fu eretto nel IV secolo quando a capo dell’impero romano c’era Costantino, una delle figure più importanti dell'impero romano.

To better understand the historical importance of Arles, one should know that in 1981, several monuments in the city became UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) heritage sites. These monuments are: the Arena, the Ancient Theatre, the Baths of Constantine, the necropolis of the Alyscamps and the Romanesque cathedral of Saint Trophime.

Per comprendere meglio l’importanza storica di Arles bisogna sapere che nel 1981 diversi monumenti della città sono diventati patrimonio dell’UNESCO (Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l'Educazione, la Scienza e la Cultura). Questi monumenti sono: l'Arena, il Teatro antico, le Terme di Costantino, la necropoli degli Alyscamps e la cattedrale romanica di Saint Trophime.

Interesting fact: Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles from February 1888 to May 1889 and painted some of his greatest masterpieces during this period, including the famous Sunflowers.

Curiosità: Vincent van Gogh visse ad Arles dal febbraio del 1888 al maggio 1889 ed in questo periodo dipinse alcuni dei suoi maggiori capolavori tra cui i celeberrimi Girasoli.

Arles is crossed by the Rhone, an important 812 km long European river that has its source in Switzerland. Strolling along the banks of the Rhone is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful things to do in this city. Part of this area was rebuilt after the Second World War. The walk can be done on two levels. On the higher level from which you can enjoy the panorama surrounding the city and on a lower level where you are level with the riverbank.

Arles è attraversata dal Rodano, un importante fiume europeo lungo 812 km che nasce in Svizzera. Affacciarsi sul lungofiume del Rodano è, secondo me, una delle cose più belle da fare in questa città. Parte di questa zona è stata ricostruita dopo la seconda guerra mondiale. La passeggiata si può fare su due livelli. Sul piano più alto dal quale si può godere del panorama che circonda la città e su un piano più basso in cui si è a livello con la sponda del fiume.
