Expensive

Hello and welcome to my blog once again!

There are a lot of things that need to be talked about and fixed.
Sadly, not a lot of things get fixed and it's really, really disappointing.

Today, I'll be talking about the way things are suddenly expensive in the country.

Do enjoy!

A month ago, I heard rumors flying around that the price of a bag of sachet water would soon increase but I didn't pay any mind to it since it was just a rumor until that fateful night.

One fateful night, we got to see several students from other hostels rushing into our hostel straight to the canteen and before we knew it, they began to purchase several bags of sachet water. This was all strange to me as I didn't understand why girls would come from other hostels just to buy bags of water when water is being sold in their hostels.

It didn't make sense at the time until the next day.

Soon, I heard the real reason why girls rushed to our hostel to buy bags of water that night was because the price of a bag of water had skyrocketed in a shocking manner that students couldn't understand and so they went elsewhere to see if they could get it at a cheaper rate and that place happened to be my hostel.

I found out that in other hostels, a bag of water was being sold at the rate of five hundred or six hundred naira and that those living off campus complained that a bag of water was being sold at the price of eight hundred naira.

I couldn't believe my ears and I was flabbergasted.
Good heavens!
Where did we go wrong in this country that even the price of water has been greatly influenced by the present economic system.
How bad can it get now?
I guess we have to wait to find out if it can indeed get worse than this because this is truly disappointing.

As all business minded people are bound to do, the woman in my hostel's canteen increased the price of a bag of water swiftly without a moment's notice. The next day, girls began to buy a bag of water for five hundred naira. When I heard that, I didn't even know what to think anymore because it didn't make sense to me at all. If other items are expensive and are going through the roof, water shouldn't follow suit.

One advantage that they have is that students can't risk drinking tap water in the hostel for fear of waterborne diseases and so, sachet water is the better option and they're taking advantage of that fact.

The prices of a lot of things went up too in a shocking manner and I'm just wondering when all these would end because I am tired of buying things at their current prices when I used to buy them at a lower price last year.

Everything is just too expensive these days and it's affecting everyone and everything. People are more aggressive in public, especially traders, because they want you to just purchase their goods no matter the price, which will definitely not be possible.

Even transportation was not left out because drivers didn't waste time as the price of transportation speedily increased. As a result, I had to limit the rate at which I went out of campus because even short distances are expensive right now.

I am really hoping that things return to the way they were because if the country continues at this rate, it's going to be terrible for everyone in this country and in spite of all these happening, it seems like the government is not doing anything about the situation as everything seems dormant, not moving up, not moving down either.

My problem is that everything is going haywire and nothing is being done to ease the strain on the masses. Things are just being ignored and those that can easily adapt do so while those that can't have to struggle to keep up.

It's really crazy and sad.

I still hope for a better future for us all.

Nigerians are a group of tolerant people. We tolerate the excesses of our government. It's appalling to read the unfortunate economic summersaults over the years. Naira was stronger than USD in the 70s. In 1990, a dollar exchanged for 4 naira. Today, a dollar exchanged for more than 1500 naira. It is painful. In all of these, the political class are living large. We have the power to effect a change as a people but we have failed to use it. When we come together to exercise such a power, we may have a sigh of relief.

It seems that Nigerians are tolerating too much. It's high time we stood together as a people and spoke with one voice. Sadly, many of us just prefer to adapt.
