SHORT STORY SERIES - "A True Story, Repeated Word for Word As I Heard It" by Mark Twain
It's hard keeping up with these short stories I tell you, haha. I finally got to read one today. My choice of short stories is very limited these days, one of the reasons why I don't read a lot of them. Before I could settle for this one, I had to go through a couple of boring stories.
Mark Twain is one author I really admire. Oddly, this is the first of his stories I am reading and he has tons. If you are a literary enthusiast, you'd definitely know Mark Twain. Maybe not because of his classic the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but you should have come across one of his famous quips or quotes. The man is a genius. A stellar humorist.
- Author - Mark Twain
- Title - A True Story
- Published -
- Genre - Fiction
PLOT
The story unfolds with the introduction of Aunt Rachel a servant during the civil war, when slave trade and racism was rampant. Aunt Rachel is seen as a cheerful person to the narrator who believes he hasn't seen her troubled in all her sixty years of existence. This prompts Aunt Rachel to start narrating her life experience. How she got separated from her seven kids and loving husband. She was sold off to slavery. During the trade, she refuses to let go of her last child, who eventually consoles her and tells her that he would escape and come find her.
SETTING
The story is set in the United States. Maryland, where Aunt Rachel's mother was born. Virginia where Aunt Rachel was raised. Richmond where she was sold off.
CHARACTER(S)
Aunt Rachel is the main character in the story. She is the one who tells her story. The Narrator is named 'Misto C'. Henry, Aunt Rachel's last child.
PURPOSE
This story from Mark Twain goes to illustrate how powerful the human will can be. The endurance in the face of monumental trouble. The cheerfulness. A lesson for all.
It is unclear if this is truly a true story or not, but it sure sends a strong message. I really like how the story is told in the "African American language". It's a tad difficult to grasp but it makes the story all the more meaningful. Then there is the ironic ending.
That's the last statement from Aunt Rachel. I think a reader could choose to interpret that in different ways. There's the deep happiness from being reunited with her son and there's the great sadness of her other family and the pain she's had to endure. A great story, one I would recommend. I rate this 3/5."Oh, no, Misto C -- , I hain't had no trouble. An' no joy!"

I was about to ask you if Aunt Rachel was able to re-unite with her last child and you gave me the answer at the end.
This story seems emotional as you have explained. I would love to read it, but, there is a something about the war that gives me shivers.
Except it's reading about the tactics that goes into planning, executing, and winning wars, I shy away from the part where bloods are shed, lives are lost, and families loses their own. I do not know why...... It gets into my skin, so I stop myself from reading most of them (wait, does this mean I discriminate this kind of books?🥺)
No it doesn't, haha.
It's very normal to be sensitive and emotional to such content. It means that you feel the story and the story was good.
Thank you for reading my review.
It's a very short story, so this wouldn't take you up to 30mins to read. But it's good
