► About

So this a story about a kid who finds 1 million pounds that will son become worthless as they are fictionally introducing the Euro. Directed by a powerhouse of British cinema Danny Boyle and with such films as Shallow Grave and 28 days later under his belt is a beautifully warm, ethical and heartfelt film compared to the horrors of some of his others!

► What you loved about it

► How it influenced me

It makes you think about money, just not about having lots of it but also what it is like when times are hard. All the way through the not very subtle context of what is money compared to family haunts you. This film may be a bit cheesy but it makes a point and it does it with a sledge hammer! I remember watching this film and it definitely made me think....not only of my own actions but of the action of the society around me.

► What part of it did you find most interesting.

I think that the lead character is a child, Damien, that has built a defence around him after the tragic loss he has suffered as well as his particular needs. His journey not only of the loss of his mother but his firm belief in God creates an interesting sub text for the whole film. Yes, you could watch this film at a surface level and enjoy the warm, fuzzy and fun feeling you will get by the end. However, actually this is a film with depth and big questions at its centre. It challenges you to look at your choices if you let it. Not small choice but moral and ethical choices of society, faith and belief. The levels of this film are incredible and Danny Boyle who wrote the book and then the film gave this a lot of thought and commitment that in my opinion is not always appreciated.

The dynamics of the family definitely come across strong. The role of the broken family who have suffered such loss come across very strongly and is well acted by James Nesbitt. There was a nice featurette with the cast and Danny Boyle I found when researching this film that gets into what they were going for with this film!

► Why do you think it's significant and great.

This is a piece by an icon of British cinema, and while maybe not his best film, it is not a film that should not be ignored. Watching the trailer it has a horrible American voice over on it and is packaged for the American market. However this is a British film, with a sense of a cultural debate we are constantly having. While this is a competition about winning, thinking of little Damien, what did he really win in this film? Is it the money? His family? His place in society? Ultimately if you are a philosopher this a film to watch over again and again while thinking of what you would do with a million pounds? then step back and consider what is this film really a commentary of?

Rating
