In the video game industry we have everything, literally everything, there are games for practically every imaginable taste, some may even be illegal due to their content, but we go back to the initial point. That is why, moving away from any kind of controversy with overly weird things, I bring you a game that has simply captivated me since I started playing it, and I believe you could find the same in the game.

Do you like rogue-likes? You know, those games where the point is to beat the game in one try, if you fail you can collect resources in your failed attempts to help improve your chances of achieving it next time, in addition to gaining experience of course. Not all rogue-likes work like that, but it is a very basic formula that the vast majority tend to follow, like Dead Cells, for example, one of my favorites.

Generally these games merit combat, facing stronger enemies each time until finally one makes you return to the starting point, or until you beat the game, but what if there was a rogue-like where battles are fought with cards? They already exist, in fact, I have read several posts by @seryi13 about games that always catch my attention and have a similar premise, fighting using cards, but this one is a bit different because there are no "attack" or "defense" cards, no swords or magic, it's just us, a blind, and a poker deck.

Balatro is literally what the title says, a rogue-like based on poker where the "combats" are fought with poker hands, and before continuing to talk about the game I would like to clarify a couple of things. Personally, I don't like gambling, I don't support it, and I also don't like supporting games that promote these practices, whether they are casino games or more discreet methods like Genshin Impact or games with loot boxes, so if Balatro is here, it's because it doesn't make you bet real money or seek to promote gambling, so any joke about gambling addiction that I might make is literally just that haha.

But let's talk about the game and its fundamentals, perhaps you're wondering "Do I need to know how to play poker to play this?" the short answer is "No," and the long answer is "You don't need to know anything about poker." Balatro is quite self-explanatory and will guide you through everything you need while you learn to play it. To start, you are given to choose a blind, you must achieve X amount of points in X number of hands or else you must start over, these "blinds" are divided into rounds of three, with a small one, a large one, and the "boss" of the round, once you surpass this, the necessary points will constantly increase as you continue to meet the required goal.

To score points, you need to use the different poker hands, and as I said, it's not necessary for you to know them because the game includes a section that you can review almost at all times where it specifies the name of each hand, how it works, and the amount of base points you can obtain, even if you know how to play poker, I recommend examining the game's help carefully because, at a certain point, this seems anything but poker.

You can choose whether to skip a blind to obtain a benefit that the game will specify to you for each blind, similarly, after each completed goal you will receive some money depending on how well you have done, before choosing your next blind you must go through the store, and although it is not necessary to spend the money, it's highly worth it to do so.

Here money is not wagered, but rather invested in improvements for your deck, which will appear randomly in your store in very diverse ways, you may be surprised to see cards very different from a poker deck, like jokers, tarot cards, planet cards, or simply very strange cards that greatly shift the dynamics of poker gameplay, and I love that.

Jokers are especially important because they will help you achieve those very high scores in your games, trust me, the game asks for excessively high amounts for which you must take advantage of something beyond poker hands, your multipliers, those responsible for increasing your numbers drastically round after round. You can carry a maximum of 5 jokers and being many different in existence you can create quite curious synergies, yes, you must be lucky for the jokers you want to come out.

The other type of card I want to talk about is the planet cards, these improve the statistics of the hands you can use to score points, increasing for example the amount of base points or their multiplier, you can make quite crazy mixes taking full advantage of these cards, and I particularly like using them much more than tarot cards or others.

Honestly, it's a pretty difficult game to explain and even more complicated to understand just by reading or looking at pictures. Personally, I've only been able to complete one run after a lot of persistence, but this is literally nothing compared to all the content that the game has to offer, which is a lot.

I just have to clarify that if you don't speak English, be careful. In my case, I tried to play it in Spanish, a translation that, like all those that come from English, is in BETA state, and I failed a run because the conditions were poorly translated. So, if you understand English, the best thing you can do is play it in this language and save yourself a lot of problems (at least while they fix the translations).

I really have no idea how many hours you could invest in a game like this, but simply its runs are so fast and dynamic that as soon as you lose one you want to try another with a new strategy, it becomes addictive and only makes you unlock more and more things to have more and more hours of gameplay, something that for its price is excellent and that I openly recommend, please, play it.

En la industria del videojuego tenemos de todo, pero literalmente de todo, hay juegos para prácticamente cada gusto imaginable, algunos incluso pueden llegar a ser ilegales por su contenido, pero volvemos al punto inicial. Es por eso que, alejándonos de cualquier clase de polémica con cosas excesivamente raritas, les traigo un juego que desde que lo empecé a jugar me ha dejado simplemente cautivada, y considero que ustedes podrían hallar lo mismo en el juego.

¿Les gustan los rogue-like?, ya saben, esos juegos donde el punto es pasarte el juego en un intento, si no lo logras puedes ir recolectando recursos en tus partidas fallidas que te ayuden a mejorar tus posibilidades de lograrlo la próxima vez, además de tu experiencia por supuesto. No todos los rogue-likes funcionan así, pero es una fórmula muy básica que la gran mayoría suele seguir, como Dead Cells por ejemplo, uno de mis favoritos.

Generalmente estos juegos ameritan combate, enfrentarte a enemigos cada vez más fuertes hasta que finalmente alguno te haga volver al punto inicial, o hasta que superes el juego, pero ¿qué pasaría si existiera un rogue-like donde los combates se libran con cartas?. Ya existen, de hecho he leído varios posts de @seryi13 sobre juegos que siempre me llaman la atención y tratan una premisa similar, combatir utilizando las cartas, pero este es un tanto diferente pues no hay cartas de “ataque” o “defensa”, no hay espadas o magias, simplemente somos nosotros, una apuesta y un mazo de póker.

Balatro es literalmente lo que el título dice, un rogue like basado en póker donde los “combates” se libran con manos de póker, y antes de continuar hablando del juego me gustaría clarificar un par de cosas. Personalmente no me gustan las apuestas, no las apoyo y tampoco me gusta apoyar juegos que promuevan estas prácticas, sean juegos de casino o métodos más discretos como Genshin Impact o juegos con lootboxes, por lo que si Balastro está aquí es porque no te hace apostar dinero real ni busca promover las apuestas, por lo que cualquier chiste sobre ludopatía que yo pueda hacer es literalmente eso haha.

Pero hablemos del juego y sus fundamentos, quizá te preguntarás “¿necesito saber jugar póker para jugar a esto?”, la respuesta corta es “No”, y la respuesta larga es “No necesitas saber nada de póker”. Balatro es bastante autoexplicativo y te llevará de la mano todo lo que necesites mientras aprendes a jugarlo. Al empezar te dan a escoger una apuesta, debes lograr X cantidad de puntos en X cantidad de turnos o de lo contrario debes empezar de nuevo, estas apuestas se dividen en rondas de tres, con una pequeña, una grande y el “jefe” de la ronda, una vez superado esto, los puntos necesarios aumentarán constantemente conforme sigas cumpliendo la meta necesaria.

Para marcar puntos necesitas usar las diferentes manos de póker, y como dije no es necesario que las conozcas pues el juego incluye un apartado que puedes revisar en casi todo momento donde especifica el nombre de cada mano, cómo funciona y la cantidad de puntos base que puedes obtener, incluso si sabes jugar póker te recomiendo examinar bien la ayuda del juego pues, llega un momento en el que esto parece de todo menos póker.

Puedes escoger si saltarte una apuesta para obtener un beneficio que el juego te especificará en cada apuesta, igualmente, después de cada meta cumplida recibirás algo de dinero dependiendo de lo bien que lo hayas hecho, antes de escoger tu siguiente apuesta debes pasar por la tienda, y aunque no es necesario gastar el dinero, vale mucho la pena hacerlo.

Aquí el dinero no se apuesta, sino que lo inviertes en mejoras para tu mazo, las cuales aparecerán aleatoriamente en tu tienda de formas muy diversas, quizá te sorprenda ver cartas muy alejadas de una baraja de póker, como comodines, cartas de tarot, cartas de planetas o simplemente cartas muy extrañas que desvían mucho la dinámica del juego del póker, y eso me encanta.

Los comodines son especialmente importantes pues son los que te ayudarán a lograr esas puntuaciones muy altas en tus partidas, porque creeme, te piden cantidades excesivamente elevadas para las cuales debes aprovechar algo más allá de las manos de póker, tus multiplicadores, esos encargados de que tus números aumenten de forma gigantesca ronda tras ronda. Puedes llevar un máximo de 5 y al ser muchos diferentes en existencia puedes crear sinergias bastante curiosas, eso sí, debes tener la suerte de que te salgan los comodines que quieras.

El otro tipo de carta del que quiero hablar son las de planetas, estas mejoran las estadísticas de las manos que puedes utilizar para marcar puntos, aumentando por ejemplo la cantidad de puntos base o su multiplicador, puedes llegar a hacer mezclas bastante locas aprovechando al máximo estas cartas, y particularmente me gusta usarlas mucho más que las de tarot u otras.

Honestamente es un juego bastante difícil de explicar y aun más complicado de entender solo leyendo o viendo imágenes, personalmente solo he sido capaz de completar una run después de mucho persistir, pero esto no es literalmente nada de frente a todo el contenido que el juego tiene para ofrecer, que es muchísimo.

Solo debo clarificar que si no hablas inglés ten cuidado, en mi caso intenté jugarlo en español, traducción que como todas las que parten del inglés están en BETA, y fallé una run porque las condiciones estaban mal traducidas, por lo que si entiendes inglés lo mejor que puedes hacer es jugarlo en este idioma y te ahorras muchos problemas.

De verdad que no tengo idea cuantas horas podrías invertirle a un juego así, pero simplemente sus runs son tan rápidas y dinámicas que apenas pierdes una quieres probar otra con una nueva estrategia, se vuelve adictivo y solo te hace desbloquear más y más cosas para tener más y más horas de juego, algo que para su precio es excelente y que recomiendo abiertamente, por favor, juéguenlo.
