Film Categories I Enjoy Watching

Movies and television shows are no doubt sure ways to keep most humans entertained for hours. Some become obsessed with it while others turn to it just to kill time. On the other hand, these widely available forms of entertainment are byproducts of human creativity and technology which also proves how the entertainment industry is evolving.

Giphy

I am not someone who always watches movies or tv shows, that's if we're excluding anime, alright? And between movies and tv shows, I prefer movies because they only last two to three hours compared to a tv show wherein you have to wait everyday or on a weekly basis. Ever since the pandemic occurred, I've deeply felt the demand of people for entertainment. All of a sudden, throwback shows were reaired, a lot of shows were offered and most were even for free, but still none of it interests me.

Rarely do I find myself watching films, I only go see one when it really piques my interest and curiosity so please consider and be kind to my limited choices. 😂 I tried to recall the films I enjoyed watching and matched their genres. Based on those few films, the genres I would most likely watch are Action, Adventure, and Science Fiction. Why? Because they inspire my imagination and take you to a different world which we could never have in our mundane world.

My top films for these genres are:

▪ Alita: Battle Angel

Rotten Tomatoes

Alita: Battle Angel, based from a 90s Japanese manga (comics), is a story about an ancient cyborg found by a scientist at a scrapyard below the floating city of Zalem. The cyborg was revived and was named Alita. She lost her memories of who she was though some of her fighting skills still comes out by instinct when faced with an enemy. She's on a quest of finding her true identity.

This film is probably the last film I've seen at the cinema. I was giddy and excited to see this movie because the trailer was really nice and enticing. I love animated and wholesome yet awesome movies and I believe Alita fits that criteria.

It might seem slightly creepy, but I like the concept of the robots having human-like face while the rest of their bodies remained as how a robot's body should be. Alita's fighting moves are cool and even more when she finally gained her memories back and moved in to her warrior body. From a sweet obedient daughter to a fierce and feared warrior. Her character design is also nice especially the purple body or armor during the motorball.

Alita is a great movie and it's sad a lot of people didn't see that. And because of it, the sequel is most likely not going to pursue.

▪ The Hunger Games

"May the odds be ever in your favor."

Rotten Tomatoes

The Hunger Games trilogy is a film I enjoyed watching too. It was years after its release before I gave the film a chance and so I kind of regret I wasn't able to join fans when Hunger Games was at its peak of popularity.

First of all, the concept of the game in the film was thrilling and intriguing like a puzzle. It's a survival of the fittest game. You either win or die. Those who win gets to move from poverty to a wealthy status in society and save his district from famine. Second, Katniss Everdeen is an admirable badass character. A strong woman and a loving protective sister who would do everything for the safety and future of her family. It's a selfless act which happens even in real life.

The film was interesting and fun for me because of the story itself. I don't know if there are other films with similar story since I don't watch a lot of films, so Hunger Games' plot stands out for me. Every stage of the game is an adventure packed with lots of action. Every start of the game, I try to guess which of the other tributes would be on her side and who will be the bad guys of the film. I like this film because it makes me think that Hunger Games can be like our real world where we have to fight the adversities if we want change or improvement for ourselves and the people around us. By the way, Katniss looks cool while shooting arrows and her battle gear looks really nice, especially the black one.

▪ Lucy

Rotten Tomatoes

Lucy is a sci-fi and action film about a woman, named Lucy, who have awakened the full potential of her brain caused by a drug she have ingested. This film is incredible and I just love seeing her being able to protect herself and finally get revenge to those people who did her wrong. It also makes me wonder and question what our brains are really capable of. Can we really have those superpowers when we have completely unlocked our brains' power to a hundred percent?

Based on the films as examples to the genres I like, there's another subject that I realized while writing. I am fascinated with films where the main characters are strong women. It's Women's Month last month too, this could've been a good post for it.

If action, sci-fi, and adventure with strong female characters are the kinds of film I would most likely watch, the genre I abhor completely is horror. I have a vivid imagination and watching horror films really affect my night routine and thoughts when I am alone. That is all, thanks for reading my post. Hopefully the pandemic ends soon so we can all return to watch and enjoy movies at the cinema. :)

Same. After seeing the film I searched on topics like telekinesis. I wonder what these people possessing such power feel inside their mind. Though it must be convenient for them to be able to move things through mind control.
