Mindless appreciation

I'm not very good at taking time off. Or to put it another way - I'm not good at scheduling myself time off. I just work myself to death until I fall on my face from exhaustion or a migraine takes me out of life for a few days. My spare time activities simply have to have a purpose - otherwise I feel lost.

gold gradient pojedyncze pioro.png

As some of you know - last month I visited my Parents in Poland. We don't see each other very often. The last time I saw them was almost 2 years ago, so whenever I land in Poland - I try to spend as much time as possible with my Parents. And it's not easy, because even though they are both retired, they have their own rigid daily schedules. From stably fixed meal times to a specific time for walking the dog, to watering the flowers. So, in order to spend some time with them – I have to adapt to their schedules.

podwojne pioro zlote gradient.png

To give you some idea of what my days with them looked like, here are my 'activities' during one such day:

-early in the morning I went fishing with Dad(Dad is a keen angler and now - apparently- is eel season!),

-then I weeded the beds with my Mum,

-then I'd go grocery shopping with my Dad,

-then I'd come back and prepare dinner with my Mum,

-then I picked beetles(colorado potato beetle to be exact) off the potatoes with Dad, yes, seriously (it's a particularly nasty creature, my mate called them 'Devil Ladybugs', which I think is the perfect name)),

-then we had coffee(even if everything was crashing and burning at 4 pm there has to be coffee, cake and their favourite TV show),

-then I cleaned the attic with Mum before the upcoming roof renovation,

-then we transferred the feathers from the old duvet cover to the new one (there is a photo of the new duvet cover I stitched by hand to prove it),

-then I went with Dad to visit my aunty Irena (the sweetest person in the world! she lives by a lake, so we went canoeing with Daddy for a while:),

-and in the evening I folded the laundry that Mum had taken off somewhere in the meantime (laundry dried in the fresh air is probably my favourite smell under the sun).

podwojne pioro zlote gradient.png

I tried very hard to spend some time with each of them, as they actually function completely independently of each other. Apart from having coffee and meals together - they don't spend time with each other actually at all. When they were both working it was exactly the same. I don't think they are too fond of each other. I know, however, that at least they used to like each other, because there are photos that document this fact. There aren't many, but there are some. I attach their photos together too. From them I know, they(photos) were taken even before they got engaged.

podwojne pioro zlote gradient.png

Why 'mindless appreciation'?

The places I remember from my childhood - like the forest and the hill featured on the pictures (locals call the place 'Fox Hill') - always give me the same kind of feeling - a quiet bliss. They don't provoke memories, which is probably what should happen. They don't. They stimulate my head to complete tranquillity. Meditative almost non-thinking. My head is completely silence. And that doesn't happen to me often, and being completely honest - it absolutely never happens to me.

gold gradient pojedyncze pioro.png

I am convinced that if you were sitting next to me right now you would hear a buzzing. My head is boiling non-stop. During the day I am constantly planning something, worrying about something, recalling the most embarrassing moments of my life. At night - my surreal dreams weary me to the point - if I manage to fall asleep, of course, because that's always a challenge - that I wake up terrified and exhausted in the morning.

gold gradient pojedyncze pioro.png

It's very different in my family home, my Parents lead a life I would never have chosen for myself and that's probably one of the reasons why we find it so difficult to get along with each other. But it has a lot of peace and beauty in it. A love of nature, gratitude for good health, small daily joys. When I witness all this - I smile without a shadow of insincerity but also without any great reflections or sentiments.

It feels good to return home. For a while. Just for a little while:)

I wish you all a lovely Wednesday!
Yours,
Strega Azure

Only 2.5 hour flight, so really no bother at all:) Distance isn't really a problem to be fair, flights are cheap.

It is time. Actually a lack of it.

Plus a fact I cannot do 'my things'. I miss doing things a lot:)

I live here nearly 5 years, and my Mum visited me once. ONCE :D

aah, a trip down memory lane💗These pics of your parents look like they are having so much fun and delighting in each others company 😍 Is that a little FM radio in the pics?

My dad is also very stuck in his ways and routines. I can very much relate to what you experienced. I lost my mom 4 years ago - her routines were not as rigid but her ways and her thinking were. But, I always loved going home. I left when I was 29, and moved to the UK with my hubby. I haven't been back since my mom passed away.

The things that strike me most about going home are the hot humid air that greets me as I step onto the tarmac from the plane in Durban, the complete sense of being home that I get as we wind our way through the trees towards the long climb out of the gorge when we are ten minutes from home (so much that my whole body relaxes and I let out an audible sigh each time), the hugs I got from my parents, and how quickly my accent reverted back from sounding more British to being well and truly South African, complete with colloquial speech 🤣.

What a gorgeous place for a walk - open countryside, fields of crops and wildflowers. What a win! And Pluto got a walk too!! I wonder when your mom will realise that all these years he has been walking her rather than the other way around hehe.

This was a lovely personal post, Strega 😘 - you mentioned you were in Northern Ireland. Is that where you live at the moment? 😎😲💗 !LUV !ALIVE

I don't have many pictures of my Parents from the time they were young, but those are my very favourite.

Is that a little FM radio in the pics?

It has radio function, but no, it is not a radio:)

I am very sorry about your Mum, I imagine it is hard to get back home knowing she is not longer there. It is very interesting what you have said about your accent changing and all that. How did you cope with such a complete change of climate? There are big differences between the UK and Poland. But to move from a hot country to the UK - seems quite a challenge!

I have this one thing that I love about my family home - it's a stone, a giant boulder that stands by the access road to the house.

When my grandfather was still alive, he used to lime-paint it snow-white to make it even more visible from the distance. When I was a kid, when someone asked me where I live, I always said - and you'll see a big maple tree on the left and a big white boulder on the right - that's me:)

When I was in primary school, on my way home I would touch the boulder everyday. Then when I was in academy and getting back home every month or so - I would do the same.

Stone is still there, but now has natural colour:)

This picture was made 2 years ago, in winter. That's the only one I could find with my cool rock:)

image.png

Oh yes! Pluto is such a good boy. When we went for walks with him I always kept the leash in my hand, but there was no need to put it on it. The dog trotted by the leg until we reached the drainage ditch - Pluto always has to go into the water and get his belly wet, it's his favourite place in summer. And then he gets back to tread half a step behind:)

I am glad you liked my post Sam, I thought it might be a nice change from the skeletons and greys of pencil:)
Yeah, I live in Northern Ireland nearly 5 years now:)

Very cool story about your boulder 🤗 I love it when something has a tangible history like that.

Aah yeah SA to UK... Durban can be very hot in the summer. December is hot and humid and rains a lot - lots of evening thunderstorms. January is very hot and dry, and Feb is the nicest month in summer to visit. The average temperature in Durban in the winter is 22C which is the same average as the British summer !LOLZ Durban summers are often in the early to mid 30's. We struggled initially with the winters here but they have become so much more mild over the years. And with working from home most of the week now, I don't really notice the short days as much in winter. And the summers here are simply divine.

I reckon if you are in N.I. then we may just have to meet one day lol...there are a few people on Hive in Ireland/Northern Ireland that I know now, so that would make it a cool road trip to do! Will have to drag some dreemers along with me for the ride haha. !LUV

Wow, 20 degrees in winder sounds crazy! But I imagine for all sun lovers that would be the dream! I am fan of cold, I mean real cold -20, -30, and that doesn't happen here at all :D
I would love to see thunderstorms there. I miss those a lot. Here there are none. It is quite windy sometimes but no striking lighting bolts or anything like it :(

I would love to meet! I think the north coast here is absolutely amazing, County Donegal especially:)

No thunderstorms?😮😔 too sad lol too sad!!

I've been through N.I. before... a good few years back. I went with my Mom, my sister and a friend of my Moms. We flew into Dublin and roadtripped across to the West coast of Ireland to the Cliffs of Moher, then up through the Burren and North across the border. Visited Londonderry, the Giant's Causeway, and then made our way back to Dublin. Another trip we did the Ring of Kerry in the Republic. Our first trip was a glorious week of sunshine. The second it rained non-stop and the fog was so thick we couldn't see more than a few feet in front of us... needless to say, we spent each day driving from coffee shop to coffee shop lol.

But I love Ireland (both North and South of the island) and I would definitely go again. So one day hehe one day...

hahaha... I'm sure you guys get plenty of rain - it's not called the Emerald Isle for nothing 😂But yeah ... full-on storms are magnificent, right? We drove through Belfast - didn't have time to stop in the end as we spent so much time exploring the coast hehe - But I'd like to see a bit of the history behind Belfast. I do prefer spending more time in nature though... but a day in a city to absorb some culture, history, and architecture is always good too! Is N.I. where you plan to stay long-term now? 🤗

We do, we do:) But now, at least for 6 weeks was very sunny, and hot nearly, which in here - is complete abomination 🤣 Since I live here - that never happened, it is very strange really.

I love thunderstorms, it is my favourite weather!

I am live in Belfast, but I am looking for place in small city. And yeah - I will always choose forest over city:)

I had other plans, but then pandemic happen, and we stayed here longer than we had originally planned. And now I really feel like home here:) If I meant to move again it would probably be Scotland:)

aah... home is the best kind of feeling 💗 Well, now we definitely have to see Belfast one day... and maybe kidnap you for a road trip haha. I know a couple of Hivers who would be game! Just need to get them over here again !LOLZ. I adore Scotland... I've spent a fair bit of time there... I worked in Scotland for about 6 months, commuting from London every week. I would fly in the beginning of the week and then back for the weekends while I worked on a project. And I have road-tripped to Scotland a few times too. Planning another one for the summer with my family lol. I want to visit Skye! I was in Scotland as recently as January with @dreemsteem, @penderis, and @tengolotodo (our mad Scot and fantastic tour guide)... I will have to work on getting them together again!!

All of those activities appeal to me, except, shopping, transferring feathers (hard no there), and folding laundry. Speaking of laundry, you’re right; nothing smells like laundry dried in fresh air. It’s a must for mine.

Ever draw your surreal dreams?

my Parents lead a life I would never have chosen for myself

I can echo that. A lot of people I know can echo that. I wonder if it’s a common experience.

It sounds like you have a balanced way of being with your parents. I really like your whole attitude and approach. It’s a grown up one. I don’t see that often.

Just for a little while:)

Ever draw your surreal dreams?

I did, and I was not happy with that. Not happy at all. I couldn't translate properly what was brewing in my head. Its like catching smoke with your bare hands. I was playing with AI to get at least feel of it and I think those were few examples that are the closest:

image.png

image.png
#AIart Pictures was generated with use of MidJourney and Night Café

It sounds like you have a balanced way of being with your parents. I really like your whole attitude and approach. It’s a grown up one. I don’t see that often.

Few years back we would do nothing but fight, especially about politics. But now I am like 'Hey! Those are grown ass people, why on earth would you try to convince them to your views???' I just let go, and now we can just drink coffee and smile at each other. It is nice:)

That’s the key part. ;)

You picked up on that, eh? 😉

Do you know what material that is and how it was made?

It is a cork bark. Very soft, and malleable, but to do such amount of details in such tiny scale amaze me, really.

Potato bugs are just the worst, that was only a handful, but we've found plenty more. The thing is - you cannot just put some chemical spraying on that - because those came out from the ground, they are big(adult form) and not vulnerable on that kind of things, so you have to picked those up before they lay eggs. It is such strange thing to do. But if you want enjoy your potato's - you have to protect the leaves:) And those beetles do enjoy good salad!

Since you asked who’s going to guess, is that a transistor radio?

Nope! It has function of a radio, but no. Try again!

Its like catching smoke with your bare hands

Hadn't thought of it that way but I agree. Everything changes, moves, morphs into many things too fast. I've only drawn a few of mine. It was horribly unsatisfying. I resorted writing instead.

Interesting what you came up with using ai, never thought of doing that. I've tried ai out, or maybe I should say tried to "break" it in my testing of how it will deal with certain things (curiousity).

One I managed to confuse completely with the input I gave it, causing it to output almost a completely blank image. Another, one of the text to image ones, managed to get it to almost repeat almost the same image each time with additional input. Haven't played with it since then.

I just let go, and now we can just drink coffee and smile at each other. It is nice:)

That's it exactly. Not easy to do either.

You picked up on that, eh? 😉

Yes, but only because I've had my own festival of fun in life. 😉😁

It is a cork bark.

I thought it looked like cork and also thought I might be wrong. That's a lot of detail for cork. Work that requires serious patience.

because those came out from the ground

I'm remembering now. That's right, you have to pick them off. My father was diligent about it. We didn't use chemical anything. Raccoons liked to raid the corn, so he bought a jumbo size of pepper and shook it on the rows of corn. It's quite funny hearing raccoons sneezing at night.

Nope! It has function of a radio, but no. Try again!

I should have known, if only I had remembered. I cheated. I zoomed in close on the image. It's a cassette player (plus the radio function).

Trying to break AI

I like this idea a lot! Although never thought of that myself.
I just just wanted to make something out of those nightmares. And to be fair - I am still getting same nightmares, but they are changing over the years. Often for good:)

I have one that is very distinctive (the one I tried Ai on):

I'm in some giant covered building that looks a bit like a circus arena - I have golden fine sand under my feet. The arena is circular and has a balustrade covered with bizarre patterns.

Behind the balustrade there is only darkness. When I look up I see that the building is very tall, and the walls are made of very fine metal, rusty mesh. The ceiling looks like a dome in a church and a hole in the center - through which a little light comes in.

Everything is the color of dirty, smothered green and blue.

Suddenly the ground begins to tremble, I hear the thud of hooves. Out of the darkness, at the entrance to the arena runs a sprawling herd of wild animals - hybrids. The body of a horse, the head of an eagle; the body of a rhino - the head of a bull, winged horses with the heads of vultures. They are running straight at me. I lie down on the ground curling my limbs and covering my head with my hands.

Then I wake up.

This dream repeated often, in a similar configuration but changed very significantly when I met my current partner.

I am in the same arena, the walls are still made of mesh, but no longer rusty, and it lets some light through. The sand is filled with hoofprints, and other less familiar animal prints. The balustrade is covered with some inscriptions - but I can't read them. A lot of golden light comes through an opening in the dome.
I walk towards the exit of the arena and when I cross the arena - I wake up.

I guess that something in my life went well:)

Yes, but only because I've had my own festival of fun in life. 😉😁

How about sharing a bit of it?

It's quite funny hearing raccoons sneezing at night.

I actually died of laughter!!! That is crazy!

I should have known, if only I had remembered. I cheated. I zoomed in close on the image. It's a cassette player (plus the radio function).

I like this idea a lot!

It started with an ai bot on server. It took a while but I broke the bot a few times, found weaknesses in it. That got me thinking about the visual ai stuff and what would happen with various inputs. All very interesting but I'm done with that now.

I am still getting same nightmares, but they are changing over the years. Often for good:)

That change and for the good sounds to me as if you're resolving what the root of them are.

That's quite a dream you described and I gather it's a repetitive one that you've had for a long time. I can't help but think of Dune.

These parts stand out to me:

Out of the darkness, at the entrance to the arena runs a sprawling herd of wild animals - hybrids. The body of a horse, the head of an eagle; the body of a rhino - the head of a bull, winged horses with the heads of vultures.

This dream repeated often, in a similar configuration but changed very significantly when I met my current partner.

The balustrade is covered with some inscriptions - but I can't read them.

I guess that something in my life went well:)

Sounds like you resolved something in this but still growing.

I've had a recurring dream that's gone on for over 20 years. It's changed a lot during that time period. Just had it again a few weeks ago and really was surprised at how much it's evolved and lightened. I went lucid in this last one, although I've lucid dreamed for a very long time, so that's not new.

How about sharing a bit of it?

Which part? It's been quite a trip from the start. A challenging childhood, which is what initially motivated me to do a massive amount of inner journeying for most of my life (travelling of a different kind; in that sense I'm "well travelled") 😂.

Add to that other experiences (too many details) with a lead up to a complete dissolution of all sense of identity (a year after, I read this is described as ego death/dark night of the soul/etc) back in 2013/2014. I think of that time as crossing a bridge, the curtain was lifted, and a revealing of what "I" truly is, coupled with seeing the nature of this world at the same time, took place. Altered my life forever, found what I spent my life searching for without knowing what I was looking for (if that makes sense). Since then, it's the daily practice thing I mentioned.

I actually died of laughter!!! That is crazy!

I thought you'd like the raccoon story. It still makes me chuckle.

But @holoz0r had guessed the purpose of this alien machine first!
So prize goes to him, sorry:)

Hahahaha! I didn't know there was a prize! Congrats to @holoz0r!!!

personal stuff

I think I get your meaning. Childhood - whatever it may be - leaves its mark on adult life, but it is up to us to decide what we do with it - whether we turn it into strength or weakness.
I'm not sure I had my 'breakthrough' moment in life. But I have had some moments of total clarity when I realised exactly what I needed to do. And it usually involved turning my life upside down, and very drastic changes.
I'm very glad that these moments happened.

Hahahaha! I didn't know there was a prize! Congrats to @holoz0r!!!

I would love to read about your 20 years long dream, if you don't mind:)

It's a long, long story and relates directly to my entire life path, so quite complex and not fit for public consumption. That said, the theme is one of packing to move, which is the best way I can describe it. Over time, there has been less and less "stuff" to deal with.

The most recent dream, it was a few bits and bobs directly related to my mother. I'm fairly sure she died early last year. I have not been able to confirm that despite a great deal of effort on my part. The dream was directly connected to that and tying up a couple loose ends that way. As I said, I became lucid in the dream, so I was aware of what it all was about before I woke up.

Childhood - whatever it may be - leaves its mark on adult life, but it is up to us to decide what we do with it - whether we turn it into strength or weakness.

It is up to the individual as to what they choose to do with it. Strength and weakness are two sides of the same coin. A strength can be a weakness and a weakness can be a strength. I say that because of a great deal of exploration into what is a strength and what is a weakness to the point that I see they are just two sides of the same coin, or what I call the duality game.

I'm not sure I had my 'breakthrough' moment in life. But I have had some moments of total clarity when I realised exactly what I needed to do. And it usually involved turning my life upside down, and very drastic changes.

There are many breakthroughs, it all depends on what you perceive as a breakthrough. What you describe is exactly what happens. This turning upside down and very drastic changes.

I'm very glad that these moments happened.

This statement is indicative of you having experienced your own breakthroughs. Each of us is on a journey and the only one that need understand your journey is you.

I was just curious to see who reads my writings from cover to cover.

😂😂😂 I like that. I just assume that if I'm lucky, five people will read my posts. I won't say what I base that on though. 😂

That part actually sound scary to me, I am hardly ever aware that I am dreaming.

I would say that weakness stem from strength and strength can stem from weakness. But in it's essence - I very much agree with you.

breakthroughs

All make sense. Being observant and keeping a close eye on your life is really very important.

It requires practice (like everything). It's not scary at all. In the past, I have repeatedly experienced a great deal of sheer terror in dreams, but it was always when I wasn't lucid.

I've practiced lucid dreaming since I was a child; quite a few years of dreamwork. I spend little time on all of that for several years now.

An interesting thing I've noticed about dreaming is that I've begun to see very little difference between waking life and dreaming. I'm not sure if that makes sense. It's an observation based on my experiences.

I would say that weakness stem from strength and strength can stem from weakness.

I agree, that's exactly it. There's this flowing of one into the other like that.

Being observant and keeping a close eye on your life is really very important.

It's crucial to be the observer as well as the particpant. Took me a long time and a lot of practice to learn how to do it. I call it a daily practice because I inevitably make mistakes every day.😂

Exactly. I have thoughts and ideas. Probably too many.

lucid dreaming

I was trying that, but as you said - it need a lot of time. And my problem with it - I have chronical insomnia. For me it takes at least an hour or two just to fall a sleep. Even when I am extremely tired. Actually it is even worse when I am tired :D

So I was trying reading before sleep, calming music, oils (those were giving me migraines after awhile, hate it now). I jog often - I feel that helps a bit.

Then - I was trying breathing exercises - Wim Hof methods actually help me fall asleep when everything else fails. Meditation is next in this cue :D

Once I get to grips with this - I will definitely try to influence my dreams a little more.

Nevertheless - when I embrace my life on a daily basis and at least try to solve the problems - then the dreams are not so scary:)

I call it a daily practice because I inevitably make mistakes every day.😂

Everyone does. Important to be vigilant and take good car of yourself and other around you:)

I would recommend you memory palace very much, I did post about it. It does only scratch the surface to be fair.
Placing your thoughts and musings in different parts of the palace will allow you to categorise them and return to each one when you want. Maybe you can incorporate it in your daily practise:)

You avoid the noise in your head. It has helped me a bit with insomnia too:)

I have chronical insomnia

I see we have that in common also.😂 I find that I can't shut my mind down. It likes to go around and around like a hamster on a wheel. I often wonder how it is possible that I can easily meditate, yet when I decide to go to sleep, it's the hamster thing.

I think you have to figure out what works for you best, which does mean trying out a lot of things. I've done that for years. There are some things I find helpful. Through a lot of hard work, it has become much less of an issue over the years, but it's never gone away. It's an ingrained response to experiences I had for about 3 1/2 years at a very young age. Sometimes, all you can do is mitigate the issue.

Once I get to grips with this - I will definitely try to influence my dreams a little more.

I used to keep a dream journal to work with dreams (not to help with lucid dreaming though, that happened all on it's own when I was a child).

I would recommend you memory palace very much, I did post about it.

Thank you, I'm going to check your post out. What you're describing here is familiar. I think I must have come across some technique that's a bit similar but it's so long ago I only recall vaguely that it is similar.

Maybe you can incorporate it in your daily practise:)

Haha! You know what? I've got it so that I can consciously move my mind pretty much wherever I want when awake. It's specifically when I go to sleep at night that is where I have difficulty.

I'd elaborate the reasons why, but it's so horrifying it will disturb most people immensely and I don't want to do that. I've long worked it through years ago. That said, some things leave an impact for life. This insomnia is one of those impacts on me. Given my experiences, leftover insomnia is a small potato. 😉

Insomnia

I work on my issues quite some time, and now - I would say is great in comparison what was happening earlier.
As you say - just try different things. And I do. Now from time to time I have whole night sleep - if you told me that this will be a case 10 years back, I wouldn't believe you :D

I have dream journal, it helps a bit, but usually I would just note few loose words, hard to make sense of it :D

It seems you have a good material for a book, or a play:)

😂 I know how that goes.

Yeah, I'm not the most diligent at anything to do with writing. Another way is to record an audio, although I've never tried that.

I'd never be able to write a book, most especially not one about my life experiences. A play would be even more difficult. I've had encouragement to write a book before, a few times. It's not in my nature to do such things. Instead, I participated in a five year project for a book, so small piece of my story was published in a book (anonymously), with other participants. That's all I can handle. 😂

Actually I have to give a go with recording, because in the morning I can't force my hands to do anything precise, and that's including writing. So to record some stuff would make sense!

life stories

I totally get that. Good way to went your emotions it is life long process. Good to find something that fits:)

It's not a fun thing to wake up and start writing immediately. Definitely couldn't do it now. Recording might work out best for you.

Good to find something that fits:)

If I don't, I have no peace inside. 😅

Heyy @strega.azure 😂😂😂
That's quite a schedule you had but I really love them ... They're very cool activities as could be testified by your pictures..
Always find time to rest though, don't let migraines be the reason you take a rest.. maybe a 30mins rest everyday, it's actually nice.

I remember stealing my father's cassettes and hoping that they wouldn't get chewed up in the portable cassette player. I still remember as the double A batteries started dying, you'd hear the music sloooow dooooooown. Great devices!

We're very much alike that our head is constantly abuzz with schemes and plans and the inability to be still. To just be.

Glad you still got to take some time away from real work, though truth be told, sometimes hanging out with family is actual work, the likes of which cannot be compared to the labours done to earn a living.

Yep, that's it! I've got this Walkman for Christmas, with Madonna's album 'Frozen'. Yeah, my Parents didn't know much about me :D
But I was recording stuff from radio, and making my own mixes:) I would listen and try to write lyrics and stuff. It was so much fun:)

Yeah, I and feel that. It is easy to catch it when I listen to your podcasts:)

time with family = work

I would say so too. I was exhausting after nearly 2 weeks. I am having problems biting my thong, and with my Dad - I have to do this a lot :D It is really not that easy :D

I used to record stuff from the radio as well. We had one of those hifi systems with a record player on it too, and I recorded some of the vinyls on to tape so I could take them with me wherever I went. I listened to a lot of Queen on casette tape, and Blink 182, my musical taste then is just as eclectic as now.

The eclectic taste is good. There is so much music out there to choose only one thing :)

Spell check is not required. It was a pretty funny Freudian slip, as I interpreted it.
