Today's coin reveal post features the 1/2oz .999 Silver 2014 Great White Shark Coin struck by the Perth Mint.

1. Coin Story

For all the marine life fanatics out there, this coin design is for you. I actually have a customer who is always looking for coin designs with fish on them.

Apparently his son has an absolute passion forfishing and marine life. A few months ago I sold him some Tuvalu Tuna coins. I might actually touch base with him in the next week or so to see if he is interested in these two Great White Shark coins.

I picked up these coins as part of a larger bulk purchase, they have never really been part of my collecting or buy/sell strategy, but they are really nice bullion coins in person and they do have a niche collectors market.

2. Coin Packaging

These coins are are not packaged in their original tubes. These coins normally come in twenty-five coin sealed tubes, without an outer protective coin capsule. The after-market square coin capsules that have been used for these coins are really nice. When they were placed in the capsule however the edges of the protective foam was not cut very cleanly, so it looks a bit messy on the coin. Very easy to rectify and fix though.

3. Coin Details

a. Mintage

The 1/2oz silver bullion coins were packaged in rolls of 25, with 20 rolls contained in a full monster box of 500 coins. There was a maximum mintage of 300,000 coins.Each of the coins were issued as legal tender under the authority of the Australian Government with the denomination of 50 cents.

The purity of the coin is .999 fine silver.

4. Coin Design

a. Reverse Design

The reverse design by Natasha Muhl depicts the fearsome Great White Shark with the outline of two other sharks swimming in the background.

The design includes an inscription 'GREAT WHITE SHARK', the coin weight '1/2 oz', the coin purity '999 SILVER' and the year of issue '2014'.

b. Obverse Design

The obverse of the coin portrays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The design also includes the inscriptions 'ELIZABETH II', country of origin 'AUSTRALIA' and the denomination '50 CENTS' (Australian).
