OFFSETTING SUPPOSED DEBT

I could feel the heat pumping from within me, with sweat pouring down from my head and down to my already soaked sportswear.

"I feel like I would die if I don't drink water right now," I said bending with my hands on my knees panting.
My guy, Emma, who was lying on the field grass beside me laughed and said, "It is you who decided to play like Messi the Great,"

"Today's ball just got to my head, at least I am glad I was able to score a goal first half," I said.

"look at water there for you to buy," Emma said as he tapped me showing me a woman who was hawking sachet water.

"And I didn't even carry money with me," I said as I sighed.

"I didn't carry any money either, " Emma said.

Just then, Jessy, a guy that only recently began joining us to play called the woman who was selling the water and bought for everyone in the field. Emma and I rushed immediately to the spot where the water was kept and took from it.
Immediately I got mine I gulped it and it was all gone within 10 seconds.
My friend, Emma, looked at me with amazement and said "You needed the water badly, I see that now. Are you okay with that or do you still need more?"

"I still need more, you don't want to finish yours?" I asked praying within me that the answer would be yes.

"Here, take, I don't need much water," Emma said as he handed me his half-drunk sachet water.

"Thanks, bro," I said on receiving the sachet of water which I drank immediately squeezing it to the last drop.

After some minutes, we were all ready for the next match. That was how it was on Saturdays— we played till it was dark.
The owner of the ball held it in his hand as we all gathered together to choose the captains of the team. As the owner of the ball, he was automatically the first captain and the rest of us had to play a game of who would be the other captain. It was a game where we had folded pieces of paper with each written in them, "p for the player" and two papers with the letter "c for captain" written in them. Since we already had one captain, one of the captain papers was removed and the rest was scrambled and mixed for each person to pick.

We all picked and as I hoped for, I picked the captain paper. I picked all my players including Emma and the guy who bought the sachets of water for everyone. But there was a problem, we were more than the number meant so I had to bench one person to balance the number of both teams. Normally the guy who bought the water was meant to be the one benched but I felt it would be rather perturbed to bench him(maybe because I felt I owe him something for his kind gesture), and the only one whom I knew I could bench without any argument was Emma.

"Emma, sorry but you will have to sit this one out," I said to Emma.

"How?, but I was among the first people to get here, " Emma said as he fumed.

"you have been playing since morning and there are some people that have only played once," I said with a tone to soothe his anger.

"No problem, no problem," Emma said as he went to sit down, and I knew that although he said there was no problem he was still angry.

"Don't worry, I will make it up to you. We'll go get suya tomorrow night," I said as I teased him before going on with the match.

At the end of the day, we lost the match and the opposing team scored 3 goals while we scored none. On our way back home, Emma made sure he mocked me throughout. He claimed our losing was as a result of his not participating. I let him have his fun.

Before we got to the junction where we'd both go our separate ways, I asked him, "Emma are you still angry at what I did earlier?"

"No man, I am not angry. I was initially but I get why you did what you did then, so, that's all water under the bridge now. You're my gee so, no qualms," he said

"Thank you for overlooking it because I know what I did was wrong," I pleased.

"That is not a problem at all. You guys lost woefully and I am still getting my suya tomorrow,. That's a deal" he said as he laughed.

"You and your love for suya, this guy," I said as we both laughed and began discussing and analyzing the day's games until we went our separate ways.

Hahaha 😂

You knew exactly what Emma loved and you used that weapon generously 🤣🤣

Sometimes owing someone a favor can backfire as it did during the match with your friends. I am glad Emma understood and supported your decision in the end.

I didn't exactly owe him. I just felt I did because he got us water. I understand that anyone but Emma would make a fuss about getting benched that's why I chose him

That's lovely of Emma, if it were to be some people like....(I wanted to tag someone), it would have been an offence to be remembered for ages. Lol😅
