Call For Rain

The summer days are just awful. You're just sweating and hyperventilating. Sometimes your pulse is too high and your whole body is thumping. It's exhausting. Do you know what helps in this situation?

  1. Chilled water - Though people say cold water is injuries to health but then again, a lot of the things we eat are harmful.

  2. Juice with ice - papaya juice, mango juice, or orange juice with ice once you start drinking, it feels heavenly. And once again the stuff injurious to health bits.

  3. Air Con - well you can practically make your room cold like the south pole and the con would be global warming

Look, folks, this post isn't about handling this warm humid weather and protecting the environment. No this is something else entirely. All this heat is reminding me of the song "Summertime Sadness" - just the title and nothing else. This summer is making me extremely sad.

(My poor collection)

And I wish with all my heart that it rains and the weather cools down. And I wish it rains for hours though I don't wish for it to flood. I wish I could drench in the rain as I used to be when I was a kid. But this wish stays in my heart, silent, untold, and not prayed upon enough. I do remember getting drenched so many times in the rain and not making any fuss about clothes that would get heavy or turn into a second skin; it'd be a battle to take those off but I'd still stand under the rain facing the sky to let my face touch as many droplets as it can.

I wish I knew rain songs or rituals.

I have heard that people would call and pray for rain and do many rituals for those cool drops to come sooner. I do not know if any of those worked though. During my childhood I did no such thing although I had heard that if it rains and is still sunny outside then it means that the jackals are getting married - I know it's so absurd but I was a child and I loved those silly stories.

There is one story I heard from my mom though.

According to my mom, she was the leader of all the kids in the neighborhood back in the day - there is no lie in it since I have met some of the people from her childhood and they all say the same thing. I don't want to deviate from the story anymore. So as the story goes, she'd round up all the kids from the neighborhood - a typical little (kid) leader attitude. Then they'd go door to door collecting rice, spices, and vegetables as well as utensils.
The plan is to cook up a feast for all the kids that joined; more importantly, my mom and a few others would be doing the cooking. But the question why the feast? Can you guess?

It's a feast fit for a wedding.

Yes, a wedding would be underway, and that too for a ritual for rain. And now you're thinking, A Wedding? And that too planned by kids in the neighborhood? For rain? Sounds a tad ridiculous, I know. The scenario could be they're marrying off the dolls but that doesn't mesh with the whole rain ritual. I didn't yet tell you the part where they'll be catching frogs, male and female. Yes, now you'd be right to think it was a wedding of frogs. Now this sounded a lot of fun even in scorching heat and I sort of started thinking that my mom had a lot of fun during childhood days.

How the wheels of time keep turning. Even though I had my fair share of rainy moments - running like a wet dog in the rain or playing football in the mud nothing was as fun as that particular rain wedding. Nowadays, kids barely look up from their tabs and phone. Nevertheless...

Let's marry off some frogs and pray to the cloud god to rain down on us.
