Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)

So an onion and it's so many layers.

If there's any genre that I love (the most), it'd be a mystery and yes murder mysteries are my absolute favorite. Nothing tops murder mysteries on my list. I had written about Knives Out when I saw it so obviously I'm going to write about its sequel as well. As funny as it sounds, I find mystery movies very relaxing - it is a good way to wind down after I come home from work. I don't binge-watch like I used to before but I know I still can do it given the proper motivation, time, and content - content being movies. Why am I spouting unrelated things? Nevermind! So, Glass Onion (2022) is what I watched in the last few days. And it still took me a good two weeks to write this. You might be wondering why the delay and all I have is a pile of answers that resembles poppycock. Let's get on with it then.

For a moment I was wondering if the name of the film should be "It's Just Dumb" or "An Ode To Mona Lisa" - yes, I kept thinking. Don't even for a second believe that the movie was dumb. No, it wasn't. It was a good film but the word "Dumb" has been used too many times and not unnecessarily. I found out that I have watched almost all of the featured movies that Rian Johnson has directed - he only directed a handful of movies. But even without knowing, I have watched all of them (except one). The rest of the cast and crew you can look up. And as I have said before, I enjoy murder mysteries way too much and which is why I will not be giving away anything - except for the obvious that is It's a murder mystery.

What Do I Think?

Recently I watched another murder mystery See How They Run and I expected too much from actors I like seeing on the screen - it didn't make me happy at all. At least that's not what happened here. Well, at first I was just a tad disappointed by Glass Onion - I was expecting more from a murder mystery. But then something snapped. I realized that in the previous movie, the protagonist was chasing a very intelligent killer. The intelligence shown here by the killer is entirely different - something I haven't seen in a murder mystery. Not all the characters are marvelous but Janelle Monáe's acting was indeed worthy of praise. From what I have seen, her characters overshadowed the infamous Benoit Blanc - not to throw shades but Daniel Craig and Southern accent doesn't mix well. The thing is that if you're watching the movie, you might feel that all the glamour and shine and a gorgeous set probably would be compensating for a not-good-enough plot. The plot is good enough - trust me. The initial subtle disappointment has poofed away. The end of it all was even more befitting.

I'd say I'm quite happy with this film. I'm a sucker for a murder mystery.
