Making A Pretty Dress For My Cousin — DIY Process

Picsart_22-09-28_12-55-25-128.jpg

Dear Hivers,

In this blog, I will like to show you the process of a dress I recently made.

Just around the 18th of September, I began to feel sick. I thought it would pass on easily but it got so severe I was taken to the hospital where I was admitted for a couple of days.

Thank God it didn't take long for me to recover. But I decided to go off and made sure to take good rest for some days while I become 100% again.

I got back to full health and I was eager to resume work at my training centre as well as to be back posting on Hive.

I had earlier been contacted by a cousin of mine to make a dress for her — she showed me a sample of the design and the material she wanted to use for it.

Over the past months, my sewing confidence has been on the rise as I have made a couple of dresses I find pretty. So I was pretty confident when she showed me the design that I could replicate it.

I started the dress on Wednesday last week and it took me just about 3 days to finish.

I made use of the following materials:

  • A yard of blue net
  • 4 yards of fabric
  • 2 yards of lining
  • A blue thread
  • A blue zip

And of course — my tape and scissors.

This is how it went down:

Started by cutting the princess dart.

After measuring the front, I went on to detach the dart and cut the fabric with it.

I had cut the fabric with the aid of the lining. Also, to have a neat finishing for the net due to the style I’m making — I’m attaching both the lining, net and fabric together.

Here I had joined the blue net to the top part of the dress.

Me trying out the upper part of the dress after attaching the blue net.

Almost done! I’ve attached the gathers to the upper part of the dress and the net to the back. All that is left is to add the sleeves and zip.

There were some tricky moments when I was making the dress though:
One came when I was trying the sew the net. The net is pretty soft and wouldn't stay still so I had to use alot of pins to hold it so I could sew it to the dress.

In general, it was a fun dress to make.

Here's the Final Reveal:
A long gown with princess dart and a split in front

There you have it!

Not literally the only dress I've made since I came on Hive but surely the most recent.

It's always a great feeling when I'm able to create something out of nothing. There is always a reoccurring joy I feel whenever I make a dress and the feeling I got from this wasn't any less.

My cousin did like the dress and it was a great fit.

Not there yet but I believe with constant practice and challenges I will be able to better harness my skills.

Thank you for stopping by! ❤

This dress looks beautiful, I'm glad you can try it out as you go. I can't help the anxiety either haha. I hope your cousin likes it and I'm glad you've recovered your health 😃.

Welcome to the Needle Work Monday Community! Every week needleworkers from around the globe get together to share our work, patterns, tips, ideas and shortcuts as we support one another. Our goal is to inspire the Hive blockchain to give crafting a try.

On Monday’s we use the #needleworkmonday tag and on all other days we use the #needlework tag without the word Monday attached. We share and post our work directly from the Community page.

We encourage our members to share about their needlework life with us. We love hearing stories and what types of things inspired your projects. We challenge you to put some feeling and emotion into your publications and help us get to know the needler behind the fabric.

Feel free to share photos of your work but it’s optional if you choose to share the steps with us (we do require you share the step process in at least one of your posts for validation purposes). If you just want to needle and share about that time we’d love to hear about it. 😊
