Buenos días, buenas tardes y buenas noches, damas y caballeros.

Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening, ladies and gentlemen. How are you? I hope very well. This time I think I bring you something very interesting or at least for me it is in a certain way, since I have seen certain anime of the Mahou Shoujo genre but they dealt with the subject in a darker way than normal, you know, works like Madoka Magica, Mahou Shoujo Site and Wonder Egg Priority, are some examples of what I mean.

I had never really given the chance to one that explores the genre in a more normal way, and in my search on Netflix I found something interesting, Sailor Moon Crystal. I truthfully never saw the 90s version as a child but I understand that this is a reboot with supposedly better animation and more faithful to the original manga story, so I thought, why not?

Certainly, I have to admit that I was expecting something completely different, seeing a series of romance with transformations and fights was not at all in my plans, and the worst part is that in a way I ended up liking it despite the fact that at first I found the protagonist quite annoying. I would consider the experience interesting, especially the first season (which is the one I watched), although it has quite a few ups and downs (and a great contradiction) in my opinion. So without further ado, let's talk about Sailor Moon Crystal.

The anime puts us in the shoes of Usagi, a rather careless high school girl and bad at studying, her greatest dream being to become a princess to stop going to school, her life will change dramatically when she leaves her house and encounters a black cat with a crescent moon on its forehead named Luna, who has the ability to speak, revealing to Usagi that she is a Sailor Guardian and that she must fight to protect others from the evil that threatens them, and also her duty will be to find the other guardians (Mars, Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury) and protect the coveted Silver Crystal from the evil Queen Beryl and her henchmen, the four commanders of the Dark Kingdom.

The series initially seems to follow a pattern of a dark commander appearing with an evil method of obtaining the Silver Crystal and then losing thanks to the power of Sailor Moon, but this is broken (even sometimes we will see Queen Beryl act to fulfill her long-awaited goal) and changes as the other protagonist girls appear, each with their own personality, developing the plot better, causing it to advance by finally explaining the background of everything and providing some surprises. Then we also have the romance part with Mamoru Chiba, who ends up being as important as Usagi. A typical concept of the time, I will assume due to my lack of knowledge.

I think the biggest flaw of this anime is that the plot moves too quickly, from one moment to the next everyone is friends and in love, we don't see something consistent that allows us to get attached to the characters, literally the formula happens that in one episode they discover the identity of a guardian and by the end of the same episode she is already another one of Usagi's best friends. Although maybe what I can consider worse is the relationship the protagonist has with her love interest Mamoru Chiba, they literally fall in love out of nowhere, there is never a real connection and they only exchange almost meaningless words, and well, his way of acting can also be criticized, for example trying to kiss Usagi while she is unconscious; I suppose the problem is not with the character itself, but the era in which it was written, obviously the message that was intended to be transmitted was different.

Although as such, not everything is bad, despite these details the plot and the idea are likable, besides strangely, something I did not expect at all is that it had excellent plot twists, maybe you can guess how it will end but not how it will develop, many times I was surprised, for example with the aforementioned, that Queen Beryl acted and did not stand still when villains of this style usually do.

Investigating a bit, I saw different opinions from different people when this reboot came out in 2015, saying that the animation itself was bad, which in my opinion is far from reality and perhaps they were biased because they preferred the old material. In my view, it is quite decent and tries to maintain an old but modern style. We must also consider that we are not facing one of the best animation studios, you know that when Toei does things, it's for revenue. The only aspect I can agree on is that the CGI is simply horrible and even disappointing, they only used it for the girls' transformations, everyone would have preferred normal animation, they were always going to repeat the same thing anyway. I was very disappointed to see that the transformations were with that style, I was expecting something different.

The soundtrack itself is not very remarkable, no track stands out above another, but they fulfill their function. What caught my attention was the opening, which I consider good but contradictory with the lyrics it has, there are phrases like: "we are powerful women who do not need help from men" and then during almost the entire first season Usagi is saved by Mamoru, quite strange truthfully, I thought there would be an emphasis on women's empowerment, maybe I imagined too much from the opening.

Anyway, I think I will continue watching to see how the work ends because now I am curious, I will tell you later if over the years this adaptation improved or got worse.

That's one of my favourite characters, just for the simple fact that I find it funny that when he wears a mask that doesn't cover most of his face he's unrecognisable, hahaha.

Hahahaha, I watched it because I was curious about what a traditional Mahou Shoujo is like, since all the ones I saw were dark and turned the genre itself on its head.

Would I watch something like that again? I don't think so, but now I have to finish what I've already started.

I grew up with the 90's version, which is very different from the original, although it has some similar aspects. For the time when it was made, it was seen in a different way, and in my adulthood I'm starting to understand certain issues haha

I admit that I disliked the animation of the first season of SM Crystal to the point of not wanting to continue watching it haha it progresses fast.

Nowadays, certain issues in this anime can be seen as something shady, but at that time it was "normal". Things happen as time goes by.

The animation looks normal to me, except for those ugly transformations.

If the original anime was fast, this one is much more so, because it doesn't have nearly the same amount of chapters, the old one has many more and fillers that helped the development of the characters, according to what I read, but what can you do? It's like the reboot of Shaman King, it's super accelerated too and things happen too fast.

I didn't know there was a reboot of Shaman King

Thanks for that information.

I really am very out of touch, look how it is that I haven't found out about the reboots of these classics.

I have never finished any Sailor Moon, despite growing up with the series. I’m also very wet behind the ears when it comes to Mahou Shoujo. The last two series of the genre that I completed would be the original run of Penguindrum (dark fairy tail type based on a real world terrorist attack with a twisted humor involving penguins) and probably the first three or four seasons of Wixoss (think Madoka but a magical girl trading card game).

Thanks for the review. I’m glad I finally got to check it out.

Wtf, that anime you said about the penguins sounds really weird, now it caught my attention.

I remember watching a few episodes of Sailor Moon at the time on a channel in my country called Telecaribe, it was mostly old anime like Mazinger Z, Heidi or candy, I think that was the only time I got close to Sailor Moon and it didn't call my attention, I felt it was going to be repetitive where they send a henchman and they come and defeat him and so on and so forth. Interesting what you say about the main villain actually acting and not just watching and sending his minions. Good post bro <3

I too thought it was going to be something like Power Rangers, just bossing the minions around hoping sometimes to succeed, having the villain act and use her power was surprising and unexpected, for me it broke the rule.

To be honest, I have watched some of its episodes (90s series), and I found it kind of entertaining, especially with the occasional funny scene. The transformation thing is not my cup of tea though.
