Re/Member, is a total nonsense as a film. — eng/esp

Lately I've been watching a lot of films, mostly focused on the horror genre, an acquired taste from my family but we all know that this genre currently doesn't live up to expectations, there are more bad films coming out with recurring clichés than good films with an innovative approach, even decent films are scarce. Then to make matters worse we have Twitter accounts that usually recommend films saying that they are good and have been a success in their countries of origin and that's why you should see them or those posts on Facebook promoting a low budget film as absolute horror, where you even have to watch the film with the lights on in the cinema because of the fear they cause. Usually all that is just hearsay and that's how I came to this Japanese film recently released on Netflix called Re/Member, I have to admit that I only paid attention to it because the proposal seemed interesting but in the end that's where it fails.

Anyone would be interested just reading the plot of this film because it sounds like a pretty good proposal: "A group of students get trapped in a time loop repeating the same day over and over again, their mission is to find the body parts of a little girl in order to get out alive, but things won't be so easy because there will be spectres trying to kill them to prevent them from achieving their goal". You read this and it surely catches your attention, time travel and horror with a lot of deaths in the process, it sounds very promising, but it ends up being mostly nonsense, where the horror after 30 minutes of the film disappears completely, changing the genre of the film drastically, transforming it into a Japanese style teen drama, as if it was an episode of a mythical Slice of Life. The worst thing is that it doesn't start badly, the tension at the beginning of the film is so high that it might even scare you, as it did me, but nothing more than that. The film is also supposed to be based on a manga, which if you search the internet its existence is almost unknown, so I can't tell you if the original material is any good either.

The beginning is the best part of the play, we are introduced to our protagonists, each one has their own established social standards, almost none of them speak to each other and they even pretend to like each other, as night falls they all strangely appear at the school, where the hunt begins. They execute excellently the technique of generating expectation while the classmates selected to collect the body are dying one by one, the entity that kills them is not shown until the protagonist dies, keeping us attentive to everything that is happening because we want to know what is killing them so cruelly, the first deaths are simply wonderful, causing a great impact because you don't expect them at all. The first days of the loop where they still can't find anywhere are the best, although later on the deaths diminish on camera, the students end up being killed without you seeing the actual act. And the design of the girl bathed in blood and without eyes that kills them is marvellous, it really causes fear and the other monster that later appears also has an incredible design, it does everything well to end up decaying as the story progresses.

The terror ends when they focus on the friendship the students forge, the play becomes a parody of itself. There is no more horror, it's all laughter among the students, they know that if they die they will simply repeat the same day so now they spend it all hanging out and becoming friends, also clearly giving time to the youthful romance in a horror film. Inevitably you think sooner or later you're watching a shojo and it's highlighted even more when at one point in the film the students go to the beach (in typical anime slice of life fashion) to have fun and continue forging friendships, where we see them playing, running and enjoying themselves. In the end you know that sooner or later they will achieve their goals, there is no longer a real possibility of failure and that friendship will prevail and triumph over all evil and yes, that is the end. Then they try to put in a plot twist that simply doesn't make sense, nobody will understand it so nobody will be surprised, it turns out from what I read that you need to read the manga to know what it really means because in the movie they forget to explain some points of how the curse works. That's how a film that could easily have been the horror film of the year was left in mere air, ethereal smoke.

I did lose interest when it started to focus on friendship and young love. However, I still finished seeing how it would end. Seems like there's a part two but I hope it would really focus more on the horror part.
