[REVIEW] THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT: feminism, alcohol, drugs and chess.

Queen's Gambit is a mini-series that tells the fictional story of an orphan chess prodigy, Beth Harmon, who faced a great challenge to alcoholism and dependence on tranquilizers as an adult, while seeking to become the best chess player in the world. This story takes place between the 1950s and 1960s and is based on the novel of the same name "Queen's Gambit", written by Walter Tevis in 1983. The name of the novel is taken from a real chess opening. The mini-series was created between Scott Frank and Allan Scott, being directed by Frank.

Queen's Gambit es una miniserie que cuenta la historia ficticia de una prodigio del ajedrez huérfana, Beth Harmon, quien enfrentó un gran desafío al alcoholismo y la dependencia de los tranquilizantes cuando era adulta, mientras buscaba convertirse en la mejor jugadora de ajedrez del mundo. Esta historia tiene lugar entre las décadas de 1950 y 1960 y está basada en la novela del mismo nombre "Queen's Gambit", escrita por Walter Tevis en 1983. El nombre de la novela se toma de una apertura real de Ajedrez. La miniserie fue creada entre Scott Frank y Allan Scott, siendo dirigida por Frank.

Queen's Gambit was released on October 23rd of this year, becoming a success on the streaming platform in the blink of an eye, it is not to be expected less considering the excellent drama that is proposed to us with the story of an orphan girl named Beth and the discovery of her passion for chess after surviving the attempted murder and suicide of her mother, who was mentally unstable and also did not receive help from her husband to take care of the girl. Beth will end up living in a religious orphanage where they treat the children with medicine and tranquilizers (which was common in those days), where she will become dependent on them and where she will meet her mentor, Mr. Shaibel, a lonely janitor who spends his time playing chess in a basement.

Queen's Gambit se estrenó el 23 de octubre de este año, volviéndose un éxito en la plataforma de streaming en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, no es de esperar menos teniendo en cuenta el excelente drama que se nos propone con la historia de una niña huérfana llamada Beth y el descubrimiento de su pasión el ajedrez después de sobrevivir al intento de homicidio y suicidio de su madre, quién era mentalmente inestable y además no recibía ayuda de su marido para cuidar de la niña. Beth terminará viviendo en un orfanato religioso donde tratan a los niños con medicinas y tranquilizantes (cosa usual en aquéllas épocas), donde engendrará su dependencia por los mismos y dónde conocerá a su mentor, el señor Shaibel, un conserje solitario que se la pasa jugando ajedrez en un sótano.

Advancing little by little she will show us her dependence on tranquilizers in a very peculiar way, she will believe that to win she needs them, and it will be reflected on the screen with her lying on her bed playing chess on the roof, going over all the possible moves, even so managing to masterfully overcome Mr. Shaibel and the chess club he was a member of. After this event, she will be adopted by a dysfunctional marriage that will break up early, leaving a single mother with little money to take care of Beth, who will not hesitate in a second to use her chess skills to earn money through tournaments, achieving economic relief.

Avanzando poco a poco se nos mostrará la dependencia a los tranquilizantes de una forma muy peculiar, ella creerá que para ganar les necesita, y se reflejará en pantalla con ella acostada en su cama jugando ajedrez en el techo, repasando todas las jugadas posibles, aún así logrando superar de forma magistral al señor Shaibel y al club de ajedrez del que era participe. Luego de dicho suceso, será adoptada por un matrimonio disfuncional que de forma temprana se romperá, dejando a una madre soltera con poco dinero cuidando a Beth, quién no dudará en un segundo en usar sus habilidades para el ajedrez para ganar dinero mediante torneos, logrando alivio económico.

During the story our protagonist will experience love and meet several male characters who will also be interested in her, but not in a bad way or something like that, they do not want to be with her just to be and already but will be willing to help her in whatever she needs in her chess career. A great example could be the great Mr. Shaibel, who technically was Beth's real father figure, a fact demonstrated by finishing the story when she returns to that orphanage, to that basement and discovers that Mr. Shaibel never lost track of her and hung on the wall newspaper clippings of Beth's achievements.

Durante la historia nuestra protagonista experimentará el amor y conocerá a diversos personajes masculinos que también estarán interesados en ella, pero no de una mala manera o algo por estilo, no quieren estar con ella solo por estar y ya sino que estarán dispuestos en ayudarla en lo que ella necesite en su carrera de ajedrez. Un gran ejemplo podría ser el gran señor Shaibel, quién técnicamente fue la verdadera figura paterna de Beth, hecho demostrado terminando la historia cuando ella vuelve a aquel orfanato, a aquel sótano y descubre que el señor Shaibel nunca le perdió el rastro y colgaba en la pared recortes de periódicos con los logros de Beth.

Queen's Gambit never shows any sign of possessing a toxic feminist ideology. Each male character fulfills his function and can become endearing, all help the protagonist in her goal, they are not painted as the bad guys. Taking into account that Beth participates in a macho environment where women are discredited and forced to play separately from men, she still proves her worth to reach the predictable end, she beats the best in the world being a woman, that's what her fight is about, to show who she is, that no matter what gender she can be better than them.

Queen's Gambit no llega en ningún momento mostrar indicio de poseer una ideología de feminismo tóxica. Cada personaje masculino cumple su función y pueden llegar a ser entrañables, todos ayudan a la protagonista en su objetivo, no se les pintan como los malos. Teniendo en cuenta que Beth participa en un entorno machista donde las mujeres son desprestigiadas y obligadas a jugar separadas de los hombres, aún así ella demuestra su valía para llegar al predecible final, ella ganándole al mejor del mundo siendo mujer, de eso trata su lucha, de demostrar quién ella es, que sin importar el género ella puede ser mejor que ellos.

Beth Harmon is not a real character but it is based on two great chess figures Bobby Fischer, who was recognized worldwide for coming from that country without apparent interest in chess and ending up becoming the fear of any Soviet who played chess, who were the ones who dominated the game at that time, being recognized as a national hero by the United States. The other great figure is Judit Polgár, the smallest and most prodigious of the Polgár sisters, who were recognized for only playing in male tournaments. Judit achieved great things such as becoming Grand Master at the young age of 12, and being remembered for her iconic rivalry with Kasparov, who said that women could not maintain long-lasting battles in chess and should rather worry about having children. Harmon drinks from these two historical characters and mixes them up on screen, either parts of their personality or several eccentric references to them.

Beth Harmon no es un personaje real pero está basado en dos grandes figuras del ajedrez Bobby Fischer, reconocido mundialmente por venir de aquel país sin aparente interés por el ajedrez y terminando en convertirse en el temor de cualquier soviético que jugara ajedrez, quiénes eran los que dominaban el juego en aquella época, siendo reconocido como héroe nacional por los Estados Unidos. La otra gran figura es Judit Polgár, la más pequeña y prodigiosa de las hermanas Polgár, quienes eran reconocidas por únicamente jugar en torneos masculinos, Judit logró grandes cosas como convertirse en Gran Maestra a la corta edad de los 12 años, además ser recordada por su icónica rivalidad con Kasparov, quien decía que las mujeres no podían mantener batallas de larga duración en el ajedrez y mejor deberían preocuparse por tener hijos. Harmon bebe de estos dos personajes históricos y los mezcla quedando plasmado en pantalla, ya sea partes de su personalidad o varias referencias excéntricas de los mismos.

In synthesis, Queen's Gambit shows us a story with a very well elaborated drama that together with the chess duels and a masterful script takes us by the hand to an adventure that shows us the disrepute and how difficult it was to be a woman chess player, giving us a feminist message not at all arrogant that includes also things like the overcoming and the determination, they don't show the man as the bad of everything, granting us this way also masculine characters that are close to the main character.

En síntesis, Queen's Gambit nos muestra una historia con un drama muy bien elaborado que en conjunto con los duelos de ajedrez y un guión magistral nos lleva de la mano a una aventura que nos muestra el desprestigio y lo difícil que era ser ajedrecista mujer, dándonos un mensaje feminista nada arrogante que incluye además cosas como la superación y la determinación, no demuestran al hombre como el malo de todo, otorgándonos así también personajes masculinos entrañables a la par de la protagonista.
