THE RISK I WISH I NEVER TOOK

avatar

Risk simply refers to the chance that anything negative will occur. Risk is uncertainty over how an action may affect something that people value (such as their health, well-being, wealth, property, or the environment), frequently focused on unfavorable outcomes.

Playing it safe refers to being cautious and avoiding risk or harm. Additionally, it involves exercising caution and wisdom; avoiding unneeded risks and dangers.

Now back to why we are here;

I enrolled in the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in 2017 to study civil engineering, but for reasons that they alone can explain, I was assigned water resources management instead.

Not because I didn't comprehend what I was being taught during my first year in the department, but rather because the lecturers in the department just opted to make things challenging for the majority of us, I was literally struggling with my academics.

I then had roughly three carryovers from my first year, which required me to retake the three courses during my second year in the department. As soon as I received my results, I started debating whether or not to leave the department and transfer to another one.

After going back and forth, I decided to take the risk of remaining in the department for the second year, thereby retaking the three outstanding courses that I had along with the courses that I would be offering in my second year. At that point, I was uncertain about the effects of the step I was taking, but I just decided to take the huge risk. "At least this life is all about taking risks!" I thought to myself.

Now I know you would be wondering if the risk played out well for me or not, well follow me closely on this ride, will you?

It was during the COVID period, when most students like me had forgotten about school, lol, because I was already working at that point in time and earning good money in an air-conditioned and serene office.Prior to that time, I had concluded my second year by February, right before the COVID outbreak in March, so I had to get a job to keep myself busy and productive amidst the indefinite break caused by the COVID virus.

It was a sunny afternoon when the news of our results being released on our school portal was announced. At first, my countenance changed because I really didn’t know what to expect—not because I didn’t do well in my exams, but because I knew how funny my departmental lecturers could be.Then I gathered all the courage I could muster and opened my school portal to check my result.

Yeee! I shouted, and upon seeing my result, I began to sweat profusely in an air-conditioned room. This time, it wasn't just one or two carryovers, but a whopping seven! You are shocked too, right? Yeah, that’s exactly how I felt at that moment.

"Where exactly did I get it wrong?" "What exactly is my offense?" "Who did I offend?" were the thoughts that clouded my head at that point.

Did I take a risk again or played safe?

The realization hit me at that moment that I would probably be expelled from the institution if I dared to take a further risk by staying in the department. In addition, my parents literally spent their hard-earned money simply to enroll me in school, therefore I wouldn't want to disappoint them by being expelled from school.

I was forced to make a snap decision to switch to another department with little to no calculations and more reading and comprehension in order to "play it safe" at that same moment.

How did my choice affect me?

After two years in the department of "Home Science and Management," I can boldly say that I’m doing pretty well for myself, and the fact that I was able to build my grade points back to a reasonable point is what I’m grateful for.

In hindsight, I am really glad I made that decision at that particular point in time, because, look at me now, I’m almost in my finals with a good cumulative grade point total and, most importantly, with peace of mind.

In conclusion, I naturally want to avoid taking any risks when it comes to playing it safe or taking a chance in my academics. Who wants to gamble with their academic future, after all?

Thanks for reading my blog, see you in the next.

Raking risks is part of life and necessary as well. Sometimes it's good, other times it's not exactly the best idea, but all is good when it ends well. I'm glad you ended up on the safe side though.

Exactly! One is definitely going to be happy when the risk pays off.

In the aspect of business, there are lots of benefits in taking calculated risks, emphasis on “calculated”. But when it comes to my academics, I don’t think I would love to take any risks at all 😂.

Thanks for stopping by my blog 👏

Profit is for those who take the risk, but not to confuse hazarding with taking risks, right? 😀

I was assigned water resources management instead.

This happens most of the time. You are entering the University with the hope of studying your dream course only for the education system to give you a course totally different from your supposed field of study. It's always annoying 🙁.

Happy you later changed to the other department and you are doing good, with good 👍 grades too.

Heheheh! Once I realized I am not in a place where I belong, I don't hesitate to reverse. Taking risk with your academics was a very close one. If you had not changed your mind, you would have gotten your worst fear the next semester.

Wow that's a whole lot of risk you took, I'm glad you're doing well in the new department. It was really bold of you to have made that choice.

Similar thing happened to a friend of mine and he changed course when he was almost done with school, although he made the decision late to change department but he graduated as one of the best student in the new department because he was given an award for being the best.

His younger brother even graduated before him but he was never discouraged at any point.

Nice post

Ikr! It took me a lot of courage!

Can you see! Hadn’t been he had remained in the former department, there’s a probability he might not have come out with good grades.

Thanks for stopping by 👏

@t-gold

I should be thanking you for writing a piece piece in HL. Originally is rare to find in bear market, sometimes on hive.
Also, seeing all the stats posts and low quality posts become frustrating to read to select few deserving ones. It was my pleasure boosting an author who wrote something original instead of coping different ideas from Google search and spinning them.
