[ENG/ESP] A restless dawn that didn't stop us from working.
Although yesterday dawned with a tinge of sadness due to the earthquake, we all know that life goes on and that, as best we can, we must carry on and help those in need. Here on Margarita Island, the tremor was felt—yes—but thank God there was no major damage. Even so, the atmosphere was heavy with concern, as if the earthquake had shaken not only the ground but also everyone’s spirits.
Even with that feeling weighing on us, we left home to head to the hotel and continue with our work. Before taking the main road, we received a call from a friend who had been stranded on the road due to a lack of fuel. We couldn’t leave him there, so we took a detour to help him.
Aunque el día de ayer amaneció con un matiz de tristeza por los sucesos del temblor, todos sabemos que la vida sigue y que, dentro de nuestras posibilidades, debemos continuar y ayudar a quienes lo necesiten. Aquí en la Isla Margarita el movimiento se sintió, sí, pero gracias a Dios no hubo grandes afectaciones. Aun así, el ambiente quedó cargado de preocupación, como si el temblor hubiera removido no solo la tierra, sino también el ánimo de todos.
Aun con ese sentimiento encima, salimos de casa para dirigirnos al hotel y continuar con nuestro trabajo. Antes de tomar la ruta principal, recibimos la llamada de un amigo que había quedado varado en la vía por falta de combustible. No podíamos dejarlo allí, así que desviamos el camino para auxiliarlo.
The city was strangely quiet, as if everyone were walking around with their minds elsewhere, weighed down by the emotional exhaustion of the country’s recent events. After helping our friend and making sure he could continue on his way, we resumed our journey without wasting any more time.
La ciudad estaba extrañamente tranquila, como si todos caminaran con la mente en otra parte, arrastrando el cansancio emocional de los últimos acontecimientos del país. Después de ayudar a nuestro amigo y asegurarnos de que pudiera continuar, retomamos nuestro rumbo sin perder más tiempo.
We took Simplicio Rodríguez Avenue, hoping to take our minds off things for a bit. The day had begun on a turbulent note, with that sense of unease that lingers after a collective scare. But work awaited us, and we were firmly committed to making as much progress as possible so we could deliver the desalination plant this Saturday. That responsibility is what drives us, even on days when our spirits are low.
Tomamos la avenida Simplicio Rodríguez, buscando distraer un poco la mente. El día había amanecido convulso, con esa sensación de inquietud que queda después de un susto colectivo. Pero el trabajo nos esperaba, y teníamos el compromiso firme de avanzar lo más posible para poder entregar la planta desalinizadora este sábado. Esa responsabilidad es la que nos impulsa, incluso en los días en que el ánimo pesa.
When we arrived at the hotel, there was no time to waste. We immediately began sanding down the filters that were still left to be processed, and then moved on to chipping them away. We were secretly worried about what kind of material we would find inside, because in the previous filters we had found a black, damaged, completely deteriorated mass that we had to replace with a new one. That experience had put us on alert.
Al llegar al hotel, no hubo tiempo que perder. Inmediatamente comenzamos a lijar los filtros que aún quedaban pendientes para luego pasar a picarlos. Teníamos la preocupación latente de qué tipo de carga encontraríamos dentro, porque en los filtros anteriores habíamos hallado una masa negra, dañada, completamente deteriorada, que tuvimos que sustituir por una nueva. Esa experiencia nos dejó alerta.
When we opened the next filter, we found ourselves facing the same situation again: a compact, dark mass that was completely useless and had to be replaced entirely. Findings like that always deal a small blow of discouragement, because they mean more work, more time, and more physical effort. But we also know that it’s part of the process and that, if we want to deliver a plant that functions as it should, there are no shortcuts.
We were already feeling the fatigue. We’d had intense days, racking up hours of continuous effort, and our bodies were starting to demand a break. So, after making as much progress as we could, we decided to check out of the hotel and return the next day with renewed energy. Sometimes, resting is also part of the job.
Cuando abrimos el siguiente filtro, nos encontramos nuevamente con la misma situación: una masa compacta, oscura, que no servía para nada y que debía ser reemplazada por completo. Ese tipo de hallazgos siempre genera un pequeño golpe de desánimo, porque implica más trabajo, más tiempo, más esfuerzo físico. Pero también sabemos que es parte del proceso y que, si queremos entregar una planta funcionando como debe ser, no hay atajos posibles.
El cansancio ya se hacía sentir. Llevábamos días intensos, acumulando horas de esfuerzo continuo, y el cuerpo empezaba a pedir una pausa. Así que, después de avanzar lo más que pudimos, decidimos retirarnos del hotel para regresar al día siguiente con nuevas fuerzas. A veces, descansar es también parte del trabajo.
We know that the coming days will continue to be just as demanding. The desalination plant requires dedication, precision, and perseverance, and we are committed to delivering it in the best possible condition. Although the road ahead is arduous, it is also rewarding to see how every step forward brings us closer to our goal.
This is how our days will continue: intense, challenging, but full of purpose. And in the meantime, I’ll keep sharing these experiences, because every day brings its own story and there’s always something to tell.
