[ENG/ESP] Juangriego, a Fishing Village and an Unforgettable Bay
On this occasion, I’d like to share with you a stroll I took a few days ago through the streets of Juangriego and along its beautiful bay—a place that always stirs up a mix of nostalgia, admiration, and deep affection within me. Juangriego, located in the Marcano municipality of Nueva Esparta state on Margarita Island, is one of those towns that seems to hold a story, a kind gesture, or a postcard-perfect scene at every turn—one that stays etched in your memory.
This town, as picturesque as it is authentic, is home to warm and hospitable people—people who welcome visitors with a sincere smile and that friendly, down-to-earth manner characteristic of the people of Margarita. Walking through its streets means encountering friendly faces, spontaneous greetings, and that sense of tranquility found only in coastal towns where life moves to the rhythm of the sea.
Quiero mostrarles en esta ocasión un recorrido que hice hace unos días por las calles de Juangriego y su hermosa bahía, un lugar que siempre logra despertar en mí una mezcla de nostalgia, admiración y profundo cariño. Juangriego, ubicado en el municipio Marcano del estado Nueva Esparta, en la Isla de Margarita, es uno de esos pueblos que parecen guardar en cada esquina una historia, un gesto amable o una postal que se queda grabada en la memoria.
Este pueblo, tan pintoresco como auténtico, está habitado por personas cálidas y hospitalarias, gente que recibe al visitante con una sonrisa sincera y con ese trato cercano que caracteriza al margariteño. Caminar por sus calles es encontrarse con rostros amables, con saludos espontáneos y con esa sensación de tranquilidad que solo se experimenta en los pueblos costeros donde la vida transcurre al ritmo del mar.
On one of its main avenues, the well-known Jesús Rafael Leandro, large stores, bakeries, and small shops line the street, offering a wide variety of options to those who stroll along it. It is a lively, dynamic avenue, always bustling with activity, conversations, aromas, and colors that invite you to stop and take it all in. There, you can feel the town’s commercial pulse—one that blends tradition with modernity and allows visitors to find everything from everyday essentials to unique and handcrafted items.
En una de sus avenidas principales, la conocida Jesús Rafael Leandro, se despliegan grandes tiendas, panaderías y pequeños comercios que ofrecen una amplia variedad de opciones para quienes la recorren. Es una avenida viva, dinámica, donde siempre hay movimiento, conversaciones, aromas y colores que invitan a detenerse y observar. Allí se siente el pulso comercial del pueblo, ese que combina tradición con modernidad y que permite a los visitantes encontrar desde productos básicos hasta detalles curiosos y artesanales.
La Marina Street, which runs along the coastline, is also lined with shops and businesses offering excellent dining options and a wide variety of goods. Walking down this street means having the sea as your constant companion; the sound of the waves, the salty breeze, and the sun glinting off the water create a unique atmosphere that envelops anyone passing by. It’s a place where everyday life and natural beauty blend harmoniously.
La calle La Marina, que bordea su litoral, también está llena de tiendas y comercios que ofrecen excelentes opciones gastronómicas y una diversidad de artículos. Caminar por esta calle es hacerlo con el mar como compañero constante; el sonido de las olas, la brisa salada y el reflejo del sol sobre el agua crean un ambiente único que envuelve a cualquiera que pase por allí. Es un lugar donde se mezclan la vida cotidiana y la belleza natural de manera armoniosa.
One of Juangriego’s greatest attractions is, without a doubt, its beach. Surrounded by restaurants serving dishes made with fish fresh from the sea, it’s a place where local cuisine takes center stage. Juangriego’s economy is based primarily on fishing and trade, and that’s evident in every detail: along the seashore, you can see fishermen preparing their boats, checking their nets, and organizing their gear. It’s common to see lines of dump trucks waiting for the boats to arrive so they can load the crates with fresh fish. That scene, repeated day after day, is an essential part of life in Juangriego.
Una de las grandes bellezas de Juangriego es, sin duda, su playa. Rodeada de restaurantes que sirven platos preparados con pescados recién salidos del mar, es un punto donde la gastronomía local se convierte en protagonista. Juangriego vive fundamentalmente de la pesca y el comercio, y eso se nota en cada detalle: a orillas del mar se pueden ver pescadores preparando sus botes, revisando sus redes y organizando sus avisos. Es común observar filas de camiones cava esperando la llegada de los botes para cargar las cajas con pescados frescos. Esa escena, repetida día tras día, es parte esencial de la vida juangrieguera.
Another of its tourist attractions is the Fortín de La Galera, a historic site offering one of the most beautiful sunsets imaginable—even more beautiful than those typically featured on postcards.
Otro de sus atractivos turísticos es el Fortín de La Galera, un lugar histórico desde donde se aprecia uno de los atardeceres más hermosos que se puedan imaginar, incluso más bellos que los que suelen aparecer en las postales.
From this vantage point, you can see almost the entire city, part of its cove, and the gentle movement of the bay. You can also see the fueling station for motorboats and jet skis, which adds a picturesque touch to the landscape.
Desde este punto elevado se puede observar casi toda la ciudad, parte de su ensenada y el movimiento tranquilo de la bahía. También se aprecia el punto de combustible para lanchas y motos de agua, que añade un toque pintoresco al paisaje.
This year’s drought has been so severe that Laguna de Los Mártires is almost completely dry. That sight makes me sad, because on other occasions I’ve seen flocks of pink pelicans and white seagulls going about their lives there. When it’s full, the lagoon is a natural spectacle that complements the beauty of Juangriego.
Este año la sequía ha sido tan fuerte que la Laguna de Los Mártires está casi totalmente seca. Esa imagen me causa tristeza, porque en otras ocasiones he podido ver bandadas de pelícanos rosados y gaviotas blancas haciendo vida en ese lugar. La laguna, cuando está llena, es un espectáculo natural que complementa la belleza de Juangriego.
From the La Galera lookout point, you can also see the bay of the same name, which is extraordinarily beautiful. Sometimes I feel that any description falls short of what my eyes can see. That’s why I always recommend that, if you ever have the chance to visit this place, don’t hesitate. It’s a unique experience that deserves to be experienced firsthand.
Desde el mirador de La Galera también se aprecia la bahía que lleva su mismo nombre, extraordinariamente hermosa. A veces siento que cualquier descripción se queda corta frente a lo que mis ojos alcanzan a ver. Por eso siempre recomiendo que, si algún día tienen la oportunidad de visitar este lugar, no lo duden. Es una experiencia única que merece ser vivida en carne propia.
